Here in NZ it is mandatory for tandem students to have a soft helmet. The instructor can wear either but all must wear helmets on tandems. Tandems are about 95% of skydives in NZ so you see plenty of leather hats around. I just bought my first leather helmet. My friend makes them with padding in but without those silly looking sausages running up the sides. Those always put me off leather helmets but my new one is quite slick. This is my opinion on the subject too. My friend was thinking of developing a fenced hunting reserve. But they have 1000 acres and 500 of it is sand dunes and scrub that is no good for farming. If this ban is for ethical reasons, then they should bann the enclosed diary farms that I saw scattered all over california. While they irrigate the adjacent fields like they did in the stone age, the animals live in a stench pit walking in thier own faecies. There is no need to farm like that there, there is plenty of water and plenty of land. We don't use the one inch bands but the slightly narrower tandem bands in the orange and blue box (can't remember off hand what the brand is called). I prefer not to double stow. Using the mini bands just seems right and double stowing seems wrong, and the bands seem to last longer when they are the right size. The big bands fit well through the grommets and where you are stowing the line above the cascade, then below the cascades, (on the side stows) the mini bands re perfect, and you get more per pound... so economically it makes sense too. how is more than 10,000 jumps close, Don is all hop'n'pop. so Dause still is unsdisputed freefall time champion. He has also flown a shitload of hours. one day someone will pass him. Hi VB, I have noticed the same type of paranioa from americans. it is like they think if you have thier bak details that you can withdrw money from them... You do have several other options. The easiest is a debit card. It is just like a credit card but you only spend your own money. All the banks here in NZ are outsourcing their cash cards to visa and mastercard, it makes online purchasing easy, and no debt. Another option is moneygram , this is by far the fastest way to send cash and give cash. I sent a bit back from the states using moneygram. You just go into an agent, there are lots of them, and fill out the form (bring your ID), you simply give the full name of the recipient and upon presenting ID they pick up the money in cash. They can do so 15 minutes later. It cost me about US $35 to send US $3k to NZ so not much in the great scheme of things and similar to wire transfer. I hate cheques too, I had one sent for 2 tandem canopies and after 2 months I gave up on it... another month later it showed up... 3 fucking months are you serious!!! haha but seriously, get a debit card they are easy, I would be surprised if you cant get one, many euros that we have jumped over the past few years have been using them.... I learned in 2002 and purchased an old racer with a swift plus reserve and a maveric 200. I did my first 800 jumps on that setup. I had 2000 jumps by the time I was in the sport for 2.5 years because I invested in more jumps rather than newer gear. That rig got me in the air, it got me work filming tandems and before long I was rocking my vector 3 with my crossfire 109 (I downzized to a 120 at 800 jumps after jumping various canopies of various sizes) . Different strokes for different folks, but downsizing should not be a priority for first gear, going skydiving as much as possible safely should be a priority. The whole downsize thing has killed more people than jumping gear that is a bit outdated. Unless freefly is your priority, a talon in good condition could be a good first rig, If it only needs a couple of hundred bucks of mods to be servicable, then sweet. It'l take time, but it will happen! As I said I am not too clued up on unions, but they can go either way it seems, it depends on the parties at hand. Well not exactly, I definately do not agree with that practice, but I am working on marketing and SEO at the moment and the major online booking agents are taking 20% commission. I am refusing to pay that at present due to our slim margins etc etc. but the major successful companies are on those sites as well as a few others. Those sites can spend hundreds of thousands on SEO and marketing, and can sens some good numbers your way, or not. The situation you have up there in Queensland is not due to this, it is due to operators coming into town and 'offering' the higher commission to gain the market share. Tandem Cairns for example, this is text book; shooting yourself in the foot. This is part of the reason the company you work for has a very tight budget and this situation is directly connected to how they are treating you. There are different scenarios for a higher commission to the agents, On one hand the agent can offer the best available marketing and charge you more commission and you agree to do so... and on the other hand there are operators that offer a higher commission to gain a higher market share. Unfortunatly in Australia/Cairns it is the latter version (that you mention) that is affecting you. True, but not necessarily. Your chances are much higher, you still have to monitor everybody because lazy people have a daily budget and once they earn that amount, their enthusiasm drops and they simply want to go home. However the chances of disgruntled staff is less, and if you send someone down the road (for being and idiot/lazy etc.) you are more likely to have a line of people wanting to work for you, having good equipment helps there too. The amount pilots are paid is atrocious in our industry, my DZ is owned (along with me) by pilots and we have discussed this in great length. As much as there are pilots out ther that are willing to fly fo free we have decided to pay the pilots as much as the instrcutors per load. they are willing to fly fo free to get the job when they are not flying but soon feel hard done by when they are... They pay fortune for their rating, they handle very expensive equipment and have the lives of your staff and reputaton of your company in their hands. I have seen too often disgruntled pilots thrashing the equipment and it is, in my honest opinion, better for the company in the long run to pay the pilots accordingly. This is not the industry standard and our opinion on that is; Just because pilots are not usually paid well, does not mean that they should not be. When we purchase our turbine I want to make sure our pilot respects us and the equipment, if they break something it can cost huge amounts of money to fix. The pennies you saved on paying them peanuts just costs you more in the end. Pay peanuts, get monkeys! As far as unions go I have no real experience with them, on one hand they give the little guy a voice but on the other hand they can get in the way of common sense. A bit like litigation.
