I buy pretty near all my books from them and a lot of DVDs. I buy enought at one time to get free shipping and as a bonus don't pay provincial sales tax which saves me 7%. Their prices on books are also much better than what I can get here. I think Amazon is great!! -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

anyone ever have a tooth "crowned"/any dentists out there?
murrays replied to Newbie's topic in The Bonfire
I have a total of 7 crowns. Because I had to have a bridge made that involved 3 crowns I had 3 done in a day.....it was a long morning. I took a valium so I was relaxed and he just kept me frozen. Those crowns are now 20+ years old and are fine. I had one root canal done a few years ago in a lower front tooth. Wasn't bad and sure beat the pain from hot and cold food. It's not something to get too worked up about....it's not that bad. If you aren't a flosser now, get started on making it part of your daily routine to preserve that expensive crown work and prevent you from needing more. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey -
What does your Dz charge for a hopNpop
murrays replied to Rdutch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
$10 Canadian (about $8 US) to 3-3.5 provided everybody gets out on the same pass or if 1 person gets out low and the rest go to altitude. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey -
Kelly, A week today Steve Jobs will give his keynote address at MacWorld San Francisco. One of the new products being rumored to be announced is a new iMac that will cost under $600 without a monitor. Still just a rumor but could be fact in a week. Any extra cost of owning a Mac is, to me, offset by the rock solid operating system, excellent service and reliability, freedom from viruses and spyware and especially the great software written by Apple included with every Mac...iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, Garageband, iCal, Address Book, Mail, Safari, iChat (works with AOL). Because the operating system, the Apple software and the hardware is all supported by Apple it is easier to use tech support if you need to....no calling the computer maker, then Microsoft, then the video card maker, etc, etc. Also remember that all Macs have Firewire built in and are ready for video editing with no configuration/installation, etc. Digital cameras likewise work with no hassle. Feel free to PM me if you have questions about Macs. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

How much did you spend in 2004 on skydiving

Rumour sites have it that Apple will announce a flash iPod sometime soon...I've heard with a gig of memory. it is possible that an announcement will be made at Macworld San Francisco which starts on January 16th. So, there may soon be an iPod without the altitude concerns of hard drive based players. Good sites for Mac rumor updates are macrumors.com and

The Apple Store www.apple.com sells quite a few 3rd party ipod speakers and they also have feedback for non-Apple products which you may find helpful. I use Amazon.com's feedback on items as well to help me make buying decisions. Google the item name with reviews added to your query and you should find a few reviews on the web. I have a 20gb 2nd gen iPod so not much of the cool new stuff works with mine...still love it but my options are limited. Enjoy that iPod, the 4th gen are so nice and small compared to mine and the click wheel is great. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

A drunken Sir Winston Churchill to Lady Astor (I think it was) who detested him and vice versa.... "Lady Astor, would you sleep with me for a million pounds?" "Why, yes Sir Winston I might." "Would you sleep with me for 15 pounds?" "Certainly not. What kind of woman do you think I am?" "I know what sort of woman you are. We are merely haggling about the price." -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I still laugh when I remember Letterman's bit about her at the funeral of Mr. Smith... Bought a new pair of skates for the 5 year old yesterday too ... if it wasn't -28C with the wind chill here they'd be outside skating later this afternoon. I'm not going to let them become total couch potatoes. We bought the PS2 because 3 of their friends on the block also have them and it gives them the ability to use each other's games. When I was in the store looking at games I thought the selection for younger kids was better on the Gamecube...and it was less $$$ but being able to trade games with other kids might save us quite a bit of $$ as well. Thanks everybody for the suggestions and recommendations. I'll use them when they get tired of Tak2 and I have to buy them something new. PS - Regarding the pig farm....Robert Pickton of Abbotsford BC has been charged with over 20 murders of prostitutes whose bodies he ground up and scattered on his pig farm. They have had people sifting through the soil at his place for over a year now finding tiny bone fragments....maybe not the best way to dispose of bodies. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Hi, My sons, ages 5 and 7, pooled their Christmas money yesterday and bought a Playstation 2. I picked out a game called Tak 2 to get them started. I was wondering what other games would be good ones to get for kids their age and if anybody has some suggestions.....that aren't "KILLZONE" type syggestions Thanks, -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Marc, I'm sure you don't but thought I'd ask anyway...Do you have USB2 ports on the Dell? iPod will work with either USB2 or Firewire. I'm sure you'll get the Firewire card working and when you do, enjoy that iPod!! -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I've had rigs with B-12s and quick ejectors but have had step-ins for ~23 years now and wouldn't have anything else. My reasons....If I never undo the stepins I can't do them up wrong. I also can't have a B12/QE open on me or forget to do one up....although the chances of one opening appear low from the previous posts I would just as soon eliminate the possibility. I also hate getting nailed with the free end on the ankle when they haven't been done up again after taking the rig off....a favourite student trick. B12's and QE's also make the rig a bit heavier. Threadthru hardware is somewhat lighter. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I just received my parcel containing Bill's logbook, a Strong "Starmaker" jumpsuit...all stained with smoke which I think is really cool... and other fantastic memorabilia of his skydiving career. I haven't had time to go through all of it yet as I am trying to wrap things up at work before we take off to my outlaws for Christmas. It is a treasure trove of Canadian skydiving history that I am honored to receive and be its caretaker. In the front of his logbook is a photograph of his jump #551, July 20, 1972. A chuteless jump is kind of an abstract thing to think of...this picture really brings home to me what an awesomely gutsy and scary feat it was to perform. A man's future riding on closing those last few feet and clipping onto the reserve held for him by another man. A frozen moment in time of Bill's life hanging in the balance. It's a fantastic photograph. No Jail. Here is a post I made in Skydiving History and Trivia a while back. I have the newspaper clipping in an old log book... The jumper's name was Michael Sergio, 37, a soap opera actor. He paid a $500 fine and did 100 hours of community service. Here is the sentencing order written by Justice Phyllis Flug... Which you will find familiar I'm sure... 'Twas game six of the series when out of the sky Flew Sergio's parachute, a Mets banner held high His goal was to spur our home team to success Burst Beantown's ballon, claiming their Sox were the best. The fans and the players cheered all they did see, But not everyone present reacted with glee, "Reckless endangerment" the DA spoke stern "I recommend jail. There a lesson he'd learn" Though the act proved harmless, on the field he didn't belong, His trespass was sheer folly, and undeniably wrong. But jail's not the answer in a case of this sort. To balance the equities is the job of this court. So a week before Christmas, here in the court, I sentence defendant for interrupting a sport. Community service and a fine you will pay. Happy Holiday to all. And to all a good day. -- Murray -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

To have *not* fought WWII would have been an even greater waste. When bad men start wars, good men have to stop them. As Sir Winston Churchill said, "War is horrible. But not as horrible as slavery." -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

The rumor sites are predicting a flash memory iPod in the New Year....likely announced in January at macWorld San Francisco. So, if you wait about a month you'll be able to see if you have the choice of hard drive or flash iPods. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

The smallest person I ever jumped with was 4'9" and weighed 85 lbs. She was tiny! She started jumping at a place that still used conventional gear (this is back in 1980 or so) and it was a terrifying experience for her as she was always afraid she was going to fall out of the rig. The rig weighed nearly as much as her...50 lbs for conventional gear. Very difficult to move around in the aircraft and if she got on her back in freefall...well, she stayed there. She nearly quit but started jumping at gananoque, ON which was the first dz in Canada to use piggyback containers which fit her better and were somewhat lighter. She jumped for a number of years before starting a family. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

FYI..., Fear and Loathing is the ONLY Gilliam movie you can still get on DVD/VHS the rest are out of print... fuck hollywood.... 12 Monkeys? Time Bandits? The Adventures of.......? Brazil? All out of print? yup... i just started trying to update my Gilliam collection (ive got TB and Brazil on VHS) and discovered they cannot even be ordered thru major outlets.. i've been hunting thru used CD/DVD places and managed to find 12 Monkeys on VHS only (and i'm going to have to get a VCR to watch any of them again ) but otherwise they are unavailable.... if i can find them in rental stores on DVD i'm tempted to pay their exporbant 'lost' fees just to have them... Looks to me like you can get anything you want from Amazon.com or its resellers. Here's a link to 12 Monkeys which is available from resellers...click on Terry Gilliam's name lower down and you will get links to all his other stuff .....most of which looks like you can buy from Amazon. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I hope that you are right. I really believe that alcoholism is a genetic trait or predisposition. My father and brother and myself ... all alcoholics. Just a while ago, while doing some genealogy type stuff I discovered that my great grandmother died of cirrhosis of the liver. I also learned that my grandparents used to drink and leave their kids on their own while they were in town drinking (they lived on a farm back in horse and buggy days). Nobody on my mother's side has or had a drinking problem. My oldest son is 28 and seems to be ok. My other sons are 5 and 7 so it's still too early to tell. I just hope that all 3 take after my Mom. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
