The only impact crater I saw ... the grass was removed by the force of impact ...it was a patch of bare ground surrounded by grass.... so that photo may be real. It's an awful deep crater...must have been fairly soft ground. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I'm an "Anybody but the Yankees and Braves" fan....but would cheer for the Yankees if they were playing the Braves. I simply can't stand George Steinbrenner and the "Tomahawk Chop and Chant". I was a Yankee fan in the days of Mantle and Maris but I can't stand them now. Besides the 26 WS pennants...they are also the owners of the BIGGEST CHOKE in baseball history. It was beautiful! I bet Steinbrenner was chewing his carpet to shreds for days after Game 7 when they got their asses handed to them in "The House that Ruth Built" It's a long season...I see Kevin Brown is already on the DL. We'll see if the old arms and legs hold up or if George is taking a page from the Mets book and getting players when they are done and paying too much for them. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Ice.....definitely something you have to have respect for. Here's a picture of the best Cessna 182 I ever jumped out of...shortly after I jumped out of it on its' last load. We were jumping at the Gananoque Winter Festival in February 1988, taking off and landing on the ice of the St. Lawrence River. After landing and while taxiing back to pick up the next load the nose wheel hit a crack in the ice and broke through. The pilot, Norm Meyers, threw open the jump door and told the jumper he had picked up to give a ride back to get out. He got out but his main snagged on the step and started pulling him under the water. He started panicking but then remembered to cutaway and climbed up on top of the wing with Norm. I also thought that the Constitution was mostly Jefferson's work...but, if James Madison framed the U.S. Constitution then I would give him my vote. I think it is an amazing document. Nick, BOC sure hasn't cured pilot chutes in tow. They seem to quite a frequent topic of conversation. A

I am not denying your experience with floating handles, but from what I have heard over the years from pull-out users, many have not been able to grab a floating handle. I think this is a pretty valid conclusion given what the old guy with the big beard said earlier in this thread, he is well recognized for actually using real data, instead of my limited exposure to the subject: Like many other subjects, the conclusion depends on how each individual thinks the various risk factors will affect them specifically, as opposed to jumpers in general. Hmmmm...let's see...our little dz has had 3 or 4 main totals in the last two years...on BOC throw-outs. The first fatality that I was on a dz for (in 1982) couldn't get her throw-out pc out of her belly band. My wife had her one and only reserve ride as a result of not being able to extract her pc from its pouch. A friend of mine from Norway bounced as a result of a misrouted bridle/pc in tow/main/reserve entanglement. Another friend of mine with 3000+ jumps towed a pc to about 700' before opening his reserve. A friend of mine with 10,000+ jumps packed himself a pc in tow by misrouting a bridle. And people worry about a floating handle that won't interfere with a reserve opening...it mystifies me, it really does....especially when the failure modes for a throw-out are way scarier imo. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

It sounds so easy, but apparently is not, at least judging by the experience of many. Well, I've had about 5 floating handles over the years and none ever took me more than a second to locate and deploy. It's not a big deal. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

No....the Dactyl we both jumped is Tom's...and is out at the Gan dz just waiting for you to take it up for a skydive Trevor !! I was out at Gan for the Labour Day weekend. Tom loaned it to me earlier in the year and I brought it back with me when I came out. I remember talking to you but you were definitely busy packin' all weekend!! -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Here you go.... Also, ask Don G. to see the Prairie Skymasters year end video to see what looks like from underneath and how not to land a Dactyl...by yours truly. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I did some searching on "Edit Links" and found a reference to a tool available from Microsoft's website called (ta-da) "Delete Links Wizard". I just finished using it...and it worked like a charm!!! The links it was looking for were all print areas on various worksheets...45 in all....and not links that showed up when searching the worksheets. I also found a useful tip for searching multiple worksheets...right click on the tab of a worksheet and then choose.."Select all" and you select all worksheets at the same time and your search will extend to all worksheets. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
-
I was afraid that would be the answer.. I have searched every worksheet as you describe and haven't found the links to the files it searches for when I open the file. I guess I'll just live with it or maybe I'll start a new spreadsheet as of January 1/05 once I have all the year end numbers finalized. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Rev, The problem would be the same if I had to change the path on a pc and couldn't find a path reference in the spreadsheet. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Another Excel question... I have a spreadsheet that has about 80 different worksheets. I use it to prepare monthly valuations of a limited partnership. It references other spreadhseets and gets values from them. A while back, I changed from OS 9 to OS X and when I copied my data to the new machine and new OS the file path had changed due to OS X's different way of organizing things. I went through the spreadsheet and searched out every reference to the old path and updated it to the new one....but I still get the message "The workbook you opened contains automatic links to information in another workbook" When I click on the button to update the workbook with the information from the other workbook I get 4 screens where it is looking for 4 other workbooks...I can't find these work book references anywhere. ANy idea on how to track down the references to these other workbooks other than selecting each worksheet and searching it individually? -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Going back to the original question, the only reason I jump a throwout now is because of wingsuit jumping. I jumped pullout from about jump #110 to 2200 over 22 years. One of these days, based on JP's experience jumping pull-out with wingsuits, I'll likely go back to my pullout. I keep hearing about people having hard pulls on them these days...I think there must be some poorly designed ones because the Racer I did all of mine on that was never an issue. Floating handle....if you can't find it in a second o two...and I've had about 5 floaters.... you will deploy your reserve into clean air. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

The people that I lived with about 20 years ago declawed their kitten. I thought it was absolutely terrible to see that poor little cat limping around in such agony for several days after the operation. We have 3 cats and none are or ever will be declawed. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Marc, Versiontracker.com is a great website for finding all sorts of freeware, shareware, etc for the Mac (and for Windows machines as well). You can export a shot or several shots you have selected and specify how large they will be in terms of dimensions...i.e. - 320 x 180, etc but you can't specify a file size in terms of kb. Try exporting at different sizes until you get below the posting size limit. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Gary, I took a look on Amazon to see what books were available for iMovie4 and discovered that David Pogue updated iMovie2 - The Missing Manual with iMovie4 and iDVD4 - The Missing Manual This would be a good book for you to get. I really found the iMovie2 book useful....especially with regards to Quicktime related stuff and codecs, etc, etc. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey -

I think you can do what you want if you use Slow Motion SMoother otherwise you have to split the clip up and apply slow motion to the middle clip. You slow things up/down in iMovie by selecting the clip and switching to the timeline mode (Where you can see the audio tracks) It's a slider at the bottom of the screen. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey -
I'd like some help with my mac and iMovie...
murrays replied to Superfletch's topic in Photography and Video
I just finished our club's year end video on iMovie...about 38 minutes altogether on an 800mhz G4 iMac with 768mb ram. I think you'll be ok with your machine....they are always slower than you'd like!!! You can do lots of great stuff in iMovie...in fact, it's more your selection of shots, how you put them together, match the edits to the music, choose the music than the computer or software that you use. The most common transition is.....a straight edit, just a cut to the next scene. I use cross dissolves and straight edits and that's about it. Cross dissolves are usually either...quick...10 frames, just to smooth some transitions that seem too jarring as a straight edit or longer to slowly slide into the next scene....it's a mood thing. I bought a plug-in called Sebsofts Slow Motion Smoother a while ago and like how it smooths out slowmotion when you apply it to a clip. I have another Soft focus from GeeThree or ??? (Can't remember and I'm typing this from work.) Go to versiontracker.com and do a search on iMovie and you'll get all kinds of ideas. Most of the add-in websites have good little videos of how their titles and transitions work. I bought an iMovie2 Missing Manual book by David Pogue and found it quite helpful. I also bought iMovie2 Solutions and quite liked it.
