I haven't seen Jo for years but he was a great guy. He had some adventures. Tough guy...he survived a couple of hard landings that smashed him up badly and made thousands of skydives after the accidents. I look forward to hearing your stories Rob. And neutered females. We have three cats, 2 female and one male. One of the females will spray if stressted about something. The male rarely sprays but pisses on the floor beside his litter box...which pisses me off. One of the females ...the one that doesn't spray... is a wonderful cat..affectionate, clean and quiet. The one that sprays is more of a loner and has a nastier disposition. The male is a great cat (except for the pissing problem)...he hangs out with the kids, is very gentle...he's never scratched anybody and is just a very easy going cat. I think that having two is good....but it depends. The ornery female would likely be happier if she was the only cat in the house. I also think that as they get older they become much more solitary animals...which is more in their nature...lions are the only cats that are pack animals...the rest are solitary hunters. Our cats all have their "spots" where they sleep...they never sleep together now whereas they used to when they were younger...up to about 2 years of age. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Nick, I remember seeing the hang glider jump on an old tape of Carl's early El Cap footage so I don't think his film was confiscated...or, if it was, he got it back. The tape that I saw had views from the ground and also from a camera mounted on the hang glider. The two jumpers had rigged up a release system to disengage from the hang glider and one of them jammed so they had quite a bit of separation but they went for their hookup anyway. From the camera angle on the ground it looked like they were really low by the time they hooked up and pulled. The tape belonged to a friend of mine who has, unfortunately, since passed on so I can't access it. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

A little two seater Luscombe with fabric covered wings owned by B.C. skydiver Chris Rye. Chris dropped me over Gimli, Manitoba in 1986. He awarded me IOOLL 11 - International Order of Luscombe Leapers #11 after the jump for being the 11th person he had dropped. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I watched on pay per view. I was wondering if Tra Telligman is ok as I saw he got carried out on a back board...also, the guy that got ko'd by the flying knee (can't remember his name)..is he ok? He seemed to be out of it for a long time. The announcers didn't say anything about the condition of either fighter. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Travel ideas for Vancouver, BC in mid-Sept.
murrays replied to VanillaSkyGirl's topic in The Bonfire
Rosa, Here's my suggestions ... I lived there for 4 years in the early 90's... If you have a nice clear day and evening while you're there take the cable car to the top of Grouse Mountain for a spectacular view of Vancouver, Vancouver Island and Washington State. There is a restaurant up there and I forget what else but I think it is something you would really enjoy. Being up there for the sunset is very cool. I don't know if they still have it but the nine o'clock gun in Stanley park was one of my favourites...they shoot off a cannon at nine pm, large crowds gather. to enjoy the blast and concussion. Bike the sea wall around Stanley Park...lots of bikes for rent close to the park. The UBC Museum of Anthropology has an absolutely stunning collection of West Coast Indian totem poles and art. It completely blew me away. Granville Island...already mentioned...is a great place to people watch and eat. Chinatown....Vancouver has a large Asian population and has lots of terrific Asian restaurants. If you have the time, a sea kayaking daytrip in the Gulf Islands would be very nice. Gulf Island Sea Kayaking on Galiano Island is who introduced me to this wonderful sport. The owner's name is Ben Miltner, a great guy who is a very knowledgeable naturalist and who has been doing this for many, many years. If you call ahead and time things right I'm sure you'd be able to do a day trip...ferry to Galiano, paddle, ferry back to Vancouver. Hope you have a great time! -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey -

I had the first brand new rig I ever bought, a Racer with a Pegasus and a Swift reserve, assembled and packed by Jump Shack. On about my 80th jump on the Pegasus I had a malfunction. I remember thinking..."You know, I don't even know if there's a reserve in this container." as I peeled and pulled. Needless to say the reserve opened just fine but I would never have a new rig come from the manufacturer assembled and packed again. I would have no problem with it going to my rigger, Aidan Walters, who lives in a different city but I want to either inspect everything myself or have it inspected and assembled by someone I know and trust. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

my little skydiving club is falling apart and its breaking my heart

Unfortunately CSPA didn't fight Transport Canada in the early 90's the way the Glider Association did and now we are fucked. The bureaucratic overhead is horrible for a club with 15-20 members...we have to fill out the same paperwork, etc as a large air service. It's absolute horseshit for a club that operates (mostly) miles away from controlled airspace in the middle of nowhere and flies 200-250 hours in a good year. But, some people in the sport wanted it this way. I was the Treasurer of CSPA at the time this was going on. I was and am still disgusted by how it turned out and resigned partly as a result of CSPA permitting itself to go under the thumb of the bureaucrats. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey -
Gordie was a "franchise player" that didn't need anybody to fight his battles for him. He never lost a fight. I saw him this winter when he came to Saskatoon for a special night honoring him at a Saskatoon Blades game. He looks damn good for a man in his mid-70's!! During one of the presentations they lined up for pictures and Gordie was faking elbows to the jaws of the people standing next to him..it was pretty funny. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Since Apple released iTunes 4.9 a week or so ago I've checked out a number of the 4,000 podcasts available through iTunes. My favourite so far is CBC Radio 3, a podcast that features new Canadian music. I find it a refreshing change from the usual radio fare. (Podcasts are mp3 files of radio shows that you download and listen to at your leisure...like Tivo for radio in some respects. iTunes 4.9 makes it easy to subscribe to your favorite shows and will automatically download the latest show for you to listen to when it suits you.) iTunes 4.9 is a free download for Windows and Mac. What is your favorite Podcast? My dad got a couple of people... Sent one to the hardware stores in town to get a board stretcher..he called ahead so they would all play along and He sent another friend to the hardware store for a bucket of dots and dashes for the telegraph (it was a long time ago when the railroads still used telegraph) -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

You can have my x86 processor when you can pry it from my cold, dead hands. Didn't you hear? Mac can now run on x86 processors now! (The new Mac OS X coming next year runs on Pentiums!) You won't be able to install OS X on any old Pentium PC. However, you will likely be able to install WIndows on a new x86 Mac. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I wonder if it might be possible to have both OS's running at the same time.....I run Windows in Virtual PC, OS X and applications in Classic mode at the same time....it would be very cool to be able to drag and drop from a Windows app to the Mac Desktop and vice versa. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Well, this time it wasn't a rumor....at the Apple World Wide Developer's Conference Steve Jobs announced Apple will be switching to Intel processors for all it's computers. I'm even more stunned than usual This is a huge change. Some stock analysts see it as a positive. I'm not so sure. Apple will have to do a hell of a transition job. So, I guess I won't be buying one of those coffee mugs on a Mac site that says "Intel Inside...Idiot Outside". I think I should buy a few Mac posters touting the Power PC "Pentium Killers" ads though...they'd be cool to have. According to Macrumors.com OS X has led a double life for five years as OS X was designed to be processor independent from the outset. It will be interesting to see how this is implemented. I'd really like a Mac that I could also boot into Windows if need be and run the Windows apps I need natively without using Virtual PC. The pressing issue that I think was a huge factor was IBM's inability to deliver a low power/low heat G5 chip for Apple's laptops. In the short term I think this kills Apple's sales of laptops...I sure as hell wouldn't buy a G4 laptop if I knew that 3 ghz Pentiums were in my future. Just wondering what other people think of this move. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
