I have a good wind jump story. One weekend at the old Pahrump Nevada ( yeah where the whorehouses are ) Dropzone , the wind was howling. Me and my cohorts were the hotdogs on the DZ with hundreds of jumps.....like 200 maybe......and we decided a wind jump was in order. We sat down and along with some beer laid out wind direction, speed at altitudes from 12,5 on down. Man we were gonna do this right. There were four of us in the 182 and it was November and being the dumbasses that we were at the time never gave a thought to how cold it was gonna be at 12k. We were six miles out on opening, I had a sweater on and lite gloves cuz it was nice on the ground. By the time I hit 9 grand doing about 60 in the uppers I was a frozen block. I couldnt even feel my hands. I pulled em down inside my jumpsuit for some protection.....then thought...if I have to cutaway i'm fucked. ok , i'm fucked , its too cold to get them out. Needless to say we landed all over the Nevada desert with only a broken leg by a fella named Steve who said he was too cold to flare. I managed to land into the wind, the sagebrush tore the shit out of the seat of my jumpsuit and my butt before I collapsed the Unit. Live and learn , if ya live. bozo Pain is fleeting. I jumped actively for 30 years and raced motorcycles before that. I was also a Firefighter for almost 30 years. Everyone came back with some degree of PTSD. And we all tried to deal with it in different ways. Some worked some didn’t. Sparky Right on Sparky ! Skydiving saved me from a long prison term that would have eventually found me thru my PTSD. ----------------------------------------------------------- I crushed L2 fractured L1-3......a couple surgeries to stabilize and made my next jump almost a year to the day from my injury. I had 1500+ jumps when I was injured and made over 1400 more of which 400 were tandems. Today...13 years later I am totally disabled having had 4 more surgeries this year. Was it worth it ? I ponder that answer every day, The choice is yours. --------------------------------------------------------- My back injury is almost identical to yours with the addition of a hip replacement. I rehabbed with returning to skydiving my goal. I returned to the sky almost a year to the day. I made 1400+ jumps of which 400 were tandems. I recently had to quit the sport due to neurological problems with my hands ,related to the back injury. Now.....13 years after my initial bounce I am fully disabled. I have had 4 back surgeries just this spring. I always wonder would I be in this condition if I hadnt gone back to jumping. I miss skydiving everyday but I still wonder ...what if. I would never try to discourage anyone from going back to the sport but you need to remember theres a lot of life left after skydiving is gone. LeRoy....and he corrected me more than once....its a capital R....met some time ago while he was in Afghanistan. I was having problems with my back and could never sleep and it was daytime for him there. We seemed to instant message every day. He was a good guy and I really grew fond of him and his wild ideas. We even hooked up once and did some jumps when i started to get better. I was hoping against all the facts that he was the guy that the cops were after, anything is better than this. Aw man.......Harry was a great guy. I havent seen him 3-4 years but always got a handshake and a hug when we met up. I just dug up his challenge coin he gave me many years ago and it brings up some good memories. Pleae email me with any particulars related with Harrys passing. Yeah....all you naysayers, Rita was a shitty skydiver. I probably jumped with her more than any of you have. She didnt take it seriously....too fucking bad, neither did I.
