That, in a nutshell, is Booth's law. He didn't make it up. It is just a corollary to Murphy's law, with the word rig inserted. There are lots of adaptations of Murphy's law, some of which are applicable to this discussion of the merits of a MARD, such as... Some of these were attributed to an author... And the not to be forgotten... People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Which is more likely to save your life?
sundevil777 replied to airdvr's topic in Safety and Training
I've been on the receiving end of some significant collisions in freefall. One that was quite severe was a head to head knock. Other collisions not involving the head can also cause injuries that prevent a still conscious person being able to pull. I've never had any trouble at all finding and pulling the reserve handle 4 times, so I definitely think an AAD is more likely to save my life. Not jumping with people that run into me would be nice. The protrack uses an infared output. The standard receiver (special made cradle) uses a serial connector, but there is an adapter that allows you to use a USB connection. Emergency Procedures - Side by Side
sundevil777 replied to BigMikeH77's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It will only be disconnected from the ripcord cable, assuming something else allowed the reserve to open, like an AAD. There will still be some force needed to get the RSL lanyard pulled free from the channels routing it on the rig. If cutting away from a two-out, I'd rather not have a shackle on the riser to snag the reserve, so releasing the RSL shackle would be better. I am not sure why you would say this. The brake lines deflect the tail, but have no effect on the A and B lines It might change the attitude of the entire canopy - where you will hang under it/angle of attack. Certainly that's what happens from full flight, but during the opening sequence there is little forward speed (assuming we're not talking tracking or wing suit) so I can't see that happening. However that's just my opinion and I prepared to be proved wrong! Don't you think where you hang under the canopy/the angle of attack changes when you fly near/past the stall point? The forward speed is gone in that scenario also. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Please explain. Way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and mini risers didn't exist, I could not remember a single instance of a premature brake release. The toggles back then did not have or need an elastic keeper for the nose. If you want to prevent premature releases, then put slider stops on the risers. For tandem jumps, that is what I would expect, but allowing minors for AFF and static line jumps is common, isn't it? Another thing that should be kept in mind is that the stretching that has been applied, to my understanding - how it has been described, is well under the load that a line should easily withstand. So, why should applying a load so much under that rated load cause anyone to assume bad consequences would result? How do you make this conclusion? "Control" may not be possible in the strict sense, but it might be that the areas that shrunk are where the stretching will occur. It depends on the mechanism of how the fibers shrink, and what happens during stretching. The lack of interest by some to want to know is, interesting. So let me get this straight, you believe that no one will tell you what you want to hear because it is a vast conspiracy to pad the profits of the canopy manufactures? Right... A former canopy mfg/designer did already tell him - not what he wants to hear, but that isn't what you want to hear. The mechanism of the lines shrinking may indeed lend itself to stretching with no ill effect. I definitely do not think this is so unlikely. From what do you make this conclusion? The fibers are not like a ductile metal. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

Reline the canopy. If your car needed an oil change would you try and 'fix' the oil, or would you just do what needs to be done and change it. I'm constantly fascinated as to how some people are looking for ways to cut corners on an article designed to save your life. I'd imagine you would frown on aircraft operators doing the same thing - why do it to yourself intentionally. Ian The use of crappy analogies is not needed. What would be useful is a study of the result of stretching. Does it affect the strength or some other property? Perhaps it is a very reasonable thing to do and the fear of some ill effect is unfounded. I'm not saying that I'd try it, but if others are willing to do some experiments, I'm open to the possibility of good results. Sure, but a lot of the sellers are seldom so. Recently I sold my gear and my wife's gear on the classifieds here. Previously I had sold two different canopies over the course of about 7 years. Although I diligent about returning e-mails and getting my ads marked as sold or removed once the items sold, what sort of feedback do you think I would of had with such a low use? You could have had 3 instances of good feedback. It would be obvious that you aren't a frequent seller, but it would also be obvious that you aren't sketchy. Decent Skydiving Movies?
sundevil777 replied to Lazarus_762's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Warning - thread drift...If you are interested in one of the truly worst films of all time, try the MST3K version of "The Skydivers": http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4360818#4360818 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0769353/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2 I find it very entertaining to watch such a horrible movie being cut up by professionals. It is easy to think that a MARD has no disadvantages, or only minimal problems that could happen in only rare circumstances. Before people conclude this, consider that a guy intimately involved with the concept thinks that it shold only be applied when you might need to cutaway at a few hundred feet. Here is his contribution to the topic: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4299972#4299972 People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Realize that your exit altitude is going to be way above what most people have for static line training - not only for the jumps with static line, but even for the first freefall jumps. So, you have at least 100 times the skill at being stable and regaining stability than a static line student doing their first freefall, and you're going to be doing it from a higher altitude, so stop worrying and enjoy it! You could intentionally do an unstable exit and still have lots of time to make it right. It is understandable to want to jump wherever you go for vacation, but try to restrain the enthusiasm, and redirect it to, as mentioned, going overboard! I did my first open water dive in Bermuda, gliding through coral arches and such, very beautiful. There's so much to enjoy there, too bad it will be a bit cold compared to the Summer. Tandem Toggle Lock ... quasi-incident
sundevil777 replied to MotherGoose's topic in Tandem Skydiving
Another potential solution for the toggle inserted too far, at least I think it is a possible solution. Use a hook knife to cut off the bottom of the toggle handle (close to the eye), so that the eye can go off the remaining bit of toggle relatively easy (hopefully). I understand that it isn't practical to use a hook knife to cut one side of the eye, that isn't easily done with a hook knife, better done with a normal sharp pointed knife that is not normally carried. However, cutting off the bottom of the handle seems practical. You'd have only a little bit of it left to grab, but that shouldn't be a problem for a TM. Anyway, this just occurred to me as something to keep in mind as it might happen to anyone that isn't careful packing or is subject to how others pack. It would be interesting to see if it is hard to do when a lot of tension has been applied. With my mild WL, I could just land from a partial braked condition without anyone noticing and not having to replace a toggle. Is this not practical for a tandem? CYPRES 2 announces selectable activation altitude
sundevil777 replied to FlyingRadio's topic in Gear and Rigging
It could be considered proper that a single toggle release-descent rate wasn't enough to fire the AAD. It must be a tough call on what descent rate should be allowed, as that much of a turn on a student canopy is pretty likely to happen during normal circumstances. That doesn't deny that the impact would still be lethal, but it is a balance of desired outcomes. Here's the best place to go in the Grand Canyon (actually a side canyon), if you want the beauty. I've been there 3 times for several days each time. int he middle of winter?
