If 2 locking stows are good, then twenty must be better! The look of all those long stows so close together is not comforting to me. I'm no rigger, and I know it has been proven to work, but no way would I want my reserve like that. This is just my opinion on the speedbag, not on the racer, fortunately it is still available with a more traditional freebag. Why just pick on SUVs? Some of them are tiny and get decent gas mileage. Others are huge and suck it fast. Some people like powerful sports cars, large luxury cars, large vans, pickups, etc. that also get lousy mileage. A minivan doesn't get any better mileage, but is not automatically considered evil. There are lots of ways to be wasteful, including driving long distances to go mountain biking, skiing, and repeatedly taking rides in airplanes for amusement. What a load of crap. So the widows are horrified. Are we to go check with them to confirm what we should think? The fact that it was so avoidable is not at all surprising. Using the widows as a headline enhancer is just sensationalistic journalism at its worst. Skydiving without an Altimeter
sundevil777 replied to dgskydive's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I had no altimeter of any kind for about a hundred jumps, then only had an old Paralert audible for about 600 more. Those are chemical oxygen generators, they make it from a chemical reaction, and they don't last long at all. Very few airlines pay the extra money to have bottled emergency oxygen for the passengers, and I think it might only be available for larger planes. I only remember British Airways ordering it for their 777s. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. That does not make sense to me. If you 'reset' the velcro, you should smash it back together completely so it has as much 'adhesion' as possible. I hope you are not intentionally putting the handle on to reduce the 'adhesion'. Peeling the handle is very easy to do, don't bypass the need to peel by reducing the holding force of the velcro. Can you identify these Kapowsin and Perris jumpers?
sundevil777 replied to sundevil777's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Harry, it is very cool that you saw this post. I still have 3 of the pics from that jump hanging up on the wall in frames. Slug: It is funny that you mention Jesse Farrington pulling on my leg. On each point, she took her grip not on my gripper, but by trying to pull my shoe off! I remember giving her some grief about that. I think there is value in having a rig that a rigger can look forward to as easy to pack. These comments from very experienced riggers reinforces my opinion that there is no value in a partially exposed PC. From the pilot's perspective, the floating handle can mean that the reserve pin has been partially pulled/may just barely be in, so the more time you spend on the outside, the more likely it is to pop open and take the plane down. Of course you also have a bad day if it deploys on the step, so I think the pilot was absolutely right, you should get off immediately. This was about '91, had a couple of guys from Perris and their video/photographer who caught this nice shot of everyone looking at him, just as we planned. Anyone ever flown on a CRJ (Canadair jet) with their rig? Help fast!
sundevil777 replied to grue's topic in The Bonfire
Smaller planes that take your stuff directly into a cargo compartment/you drop it off as you walk to the plane, you get it directly as you get off the plane are the best. Your rig can take the slight abuse, and it can't be lost. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. You should always be prepared to check it in as baggage if needed. Like when I was told that the reserve and main had to be opened for inspection. I had all the TSA letters and such, didn't make a difference, this guy wanted to use his authority, and claimed that there was a new policy requiring both rigs to be opened for inspection. Of course there is no such policy, but if you don't show up super early, it is not so easy to argue them away. Sure you barfed, we had to really want to jump to strap ourselves into that shit. For me a big part of early nervousness was gear fear. I hated the idea of opening shock on a chest mount reserve, then the landing under a tiny little high porosity rag did not sound attractive. To MJG: My advise for the gear fear part of it (to whatever extent that applies for you) would be to check out the old shit to remind yourself how lucky you are, and get your own gear and/or watch the packing of a reserve by a respected rigger. Knowing your equipment can go a long way to settling nerves. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Baloney! You want it and you're going to get it, and you'll get all the other parts of your gear too. Body position at pull time
sundevil777 replied to juliebird's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Toe taps can be useful, but it can also result in your legs being close together, which results in less roll stability compared to your legs being spread more apart. Look at many experienced RW jumpers and you will notice their legs are fairly wide apart. Take advantage of being close to a tunnel. You will probably only need to practice pulling a little bit and still have time left for improving other areas, and you'll likely leave with a lot of justified confidence. Some parts of the bible do not agree, correct? Some books were refused to be part of the bible, correct? Who was the editor in charge of that? I think that psychics helping police and so many similar near death experiences are beyond explanation without resort to an afterlife, but I believe we don't have it figured out by a long shot.
