Flying commercially with your rig
sundevil777 replied to huka551's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Good luck. It will only take one nervous Nellie that recognizes it to get security involved, then you're out of luck. Too big for carry on? Probably 1/3 of the bags people bring on are too big. They never want to tell people they can't take stuff on. I think they should have 2 bars that you must walk through or else you have to buy 2 seats or a first class ticket. Other planes have had similar fuel tank explosions. The tank had little fuel, allowing it to be easily & significantly heated up by the air cond units that were on for a long time, making the center tank much more easily ignited. This is big evidence in support of the NTSB conclusion. Aviation Week and Space Technology is a good source for real answers and informed speculation. www.aviationnow.com People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I would secretely disconnect mine as a student. But that was when it was a long connection to the belly mount reserve. The thought of the handle getting ripped out of my hand or smacking me in the face was not comforting. OK, not very useful info for the modern world. Cut-away cable housing - my experience
sundevil777 replied to pierre3636's topic in Safety and Training
What John Rich was getting at is, do you mean the metal inserts in the risers, or the housings that route the cable within the harness - from handle to riser? Some rigs a while back did not use metal housings within the harness, with bad problems resulting. My guess is that you mean the housings in the risers. Your instructor may just want you to slow down a little to be sure that you know what you are grabbing. If you do it so fast, an instructor is left wondering if you are just 'swiping' at it, something that doesn't give them a good feeling. Talk to them with this in mind and you'll be able to understand what they want and why. What age did you start skydiving?

The weekend that I turned 18. If I'd known they weren't going to actually check ID, it would have been earlier. How could that possibly be true? I read this and then sat for a couple minutes pondering how that could be. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? It is just that the fold over flaps require a certain amount of tightness and distance to the mating pocket - the geometry has to be right. Why do people like Wings containers so much?
sundevil777 replied to Newbie's topic in Gear and Rigging
You messed up with the delivery timing of the reserve? Come on, that's the one thing you always get off the shelf - not custom, and you miss a weekend? Bad form! Always cut away from a bag lock. You must understand that is not debatable by anyone. Even an uncocked PC should be able to take it away if it has gotten that far. good question. I hope you're not really falling for this crap. The answer is no. There is nothing pulling on your risers if you have a PC in tow. You really should know this with 12 jumps. Study your gear. The debate centers on the fact that many times a PC in tow will stop 'towing' when the reserve is opened, because of reduced tnsion on the container, thus there is a risk of a simultaneous deployment and entanglement. So the big question is whether it is better to cut away before pulling silver for a PC in tow. The chance for problems with a 2 out situation must be balanced against the chance for the departing main to snag the reserve. It is not a settled issue on which is best, but I favor not cutting away. Please read; http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/dualsq.pdf and this is a decent thread dealing thoughtfully with the subject (of course my posts are the most thoughtfull : http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=598018;search_string=army;#598018 edited to fix link People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Can you identify these Kapowsin and Perris jumpers?
sundevil777 replied to sundevil777's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Quite right. You ought to be able to identify the guy in the red rig - Don Bentley. Erling Olsen is on Jessie's right barely retaining his shoe, and Rob Jackson at 6 o'clock (sure wish I knew how to get a hold of him), and Rob Ritchie at 7 o'clock are the others that haven't been identified already. It is very nice handle, stays in place quite well, the yellow cable is in the loop. I've seen a few others with similar handles, VSE made mine, and I think it is better than others I've checked out. It is a metal handle, fits the same into the harness. I got mine from the good folks that make the Infinity, but anyone should be able to get it. This handle has been quite popular on Racers. I don't understand your reasoning behind that. I was trained to go "down and out" to full arm extension, then use one arm to "sweep" the free cable from the housing. Probably 300 feet if I'm cutting away from a high-speed mal. That's a reason a pull higher than 2500, I adapted my pull altitude to compensate for this factor. It beats finding out you can't manage it one-haded and having to use "Plan B". I've never had a cutaway yet, maybe I'll discover your technique is better after I've had a couple. I do find peeling the velcro, for me, goes a lot smoother with the 2-hand technique (on the ground). I use what I'm comfortable with and what I trained for. Figure that gives me the best odds of surviving. Your right hand can only go as far as your left arm will allow it, as long as you keep both hands on it. If you have to train your left hand to release part way through the process, it just seems more complicated. I guess if you pull out straight in front of your chest then there is no difference. I think the 2 handed, then sweep cables is advised for an SOS/single handled system. People should actually practice PUNCHING the handle out HARD after peeling, then doing the same with the reserve (peel as appropriate of course). On my only cutaway with a pad, I punched it out so hard I could not detect any resistance. Taking care of a malfunction is no time to be dainty with the handle, and is more likely to result in only one side releasing. Also, the altitude that is lost with the 2 handed method should not be dismissed because of the use of an RSL. I think the RSL shackle is not reliable enough, and high speed mals such as bag locks have been shown to result in the RSL not being able to activate the reserve. Peeling the pad is very easy with one hand, and I think it make it much less likely that your hand will slip off the pad. This subject is often repeated in the forums, but I think it is just a sign of how important it is. 10 years since I jumped. What would you do?
sundevil777 replied to Bip's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am surprised that you would consider doing a dope rope or tandem jump. 1300 jumps? Get into a suspended harness for a emergency procedure refresher and practice reaching for the main handle while on a creeper. Of course you want to approach the DZO carefully with your situation and not be arrogant or presuming what they should allow you to do. If you really don't have confidence in yourself, then maybe an AFF jump would be appropriate, but I think that your brain still knows how to fly well enough for you to be stable, although you would not want to swoop down hard to dock on a formation. Like riding a bike, even if you haven't done it in years, you don't forget how. No awesome strength needed, just get used to peeling it first. I think that using 2 hands, and especially 'clearing' the cables can use a lot of precious altitude. Also, I think using 2 hands will result in not pulling the cutaway handle as far. Attached is a pic of my smaller/low profile reserve handle. It simply sticks out a lot less (about 1.5 inches). I like it a lot more than other alternative handles, such as the triangular shapes. The handle looks weird in the pic because it is not actually installed (cable doesn't go into the housing). As you can see, I also like to use my opposable thumb to grab my cutaway handle.
