  1. I'm resurrecting this thread because I think it deserves mention again what the Democratic National Committee, not a single rogue activist or small group - no, the official leadership, authorized before, and what they will do again. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  2. Yes, that is it. Carefully choreographed contempt... A precision display of nastiness... People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  3. Perhaps the stomping was a British invention given to them. It wasn't even every step that would be the big, high step forward and stomp down. Very funny, I can only imagine what John Cleese would have done if he had been there watching. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  4. If it wasn't the inspiration, it should have been. I was watching the Travel Channel, the show called Himalaya with Michael Palin. They were showing a flag lowering ceremony at a border crossing between Pakistan and India. The guards from both countries do an elaborate strutting/stomping about type of silly walk that is supposed to show their anger, ferocity, or something like that. I instantly thought of the Python gang turning that into a British Government Ministry sketch. Michael Palin does good travel shows. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  5. So if you actually wanted to raise revenue to match government expenditures (because we all know expenditures will NOT be cut) where would you do it? Be realistic, a LOT of $$ needs to be raised. Expenditures can be cut. At least the rate of increase can be slowed, especially if it doesn't get labeled as a cut by the Dems in congress. Tax revenues have been going way up lately, due to a thriving economy. However, I do favor sweeping reform of the tax code. Of course many favor a flat income tax with an exemption for the first XX amount of dollars earned (some have proposed around 30K). Another way would be a sales tax only system that excludes food, and housing up to a certain amount per month. Both ideas face a lot of opposition due to entrenched interests. I don't think inheritance taxes can provide very much revenue. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  6. I know plenty of kids that work very hard on their family farms (and family businesses), yes there are still a lot of family farms in Ohio. I don't think they would agree with your "undeserving" label. Inheritance taxes on such families is an effective way to reduce the number of family farms. I think you're showing a mindset of 'taking it because they have it' that is just plain wrong. We as a country are so wealthy in large part because we can become wealthy without such government policies to prevent the accumulation of wealth. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  7. Something we can agree on! Probably could have found more in common if you had been at SDC when Airspeed was there, but Nooo, you had to be away that weekend.
  8. Hell just move to southern Utah if you want a plural marriage.. its common there. Relatives on the other hand.... BAD idea...for genetics reasons mainly. Any kind of unwanted recessive traits can be accentuated when you go swimming in your own gene pool. But all the things you list ARE different... personally If two men want to live together and make a household... it has ZERO bearing on my life. If you want to marry a woman.. and then have a sister wife or two...... go for it...it has ZERO effect on my life..... Polygamy in Utah is common, but not legal. Utah had to make it illegal in order to become a state. Marriage with relatives is risky for children, but some relationships have no possibility for that risk, for instance if one is sterile, too old, or if it were a gay/lesbian marriage. So, you agree with my comparison, that it is a good analogy? The current situation is that there are very few people that would be OK with such marriages, but a person is only a 'phobe if they oppose gay marriage. Gay rights advocates don't want any comparisons made to polygamy or marriage with relatives. Their issue is to be considered by itself, with no such comparison being valid. I think that position is unreasonable. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  9. Right - structural engineering should be taught by high school dropouts. Our bridges and airplanes would be much safer. I have to say on that one me thinks engineers need 5 yrs in the FIELD (of their choice) before they ENGINEER> I spend half my time fixing all their fuckups. Last job I was on (a big one) I had to ask 10 fuckin engineers a simple question to get an answer. "1/8 inch per foot = how many degrees?" Took 10 engineers 1/2 hour to give me an answer. I wanted to wrestle their computers out from in front of them. Jeesh They really are incompetent, it only takes a calculator, and to have paid attention during high school trigonometry. I doubt that 5 years in the field would have corrected their deficiency. The answer is arctan (.125/12)=0.597 deg, and even if the 12 inches is along the angle instead of along the horizontal, it would then be arcsin (.125/12)=.597 deg. The answer is only different if you go out to 4 places, because the tangent and sin of an angle are nearly the same at such small angles. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  10. Being gay. Because most Dems don't view it as being morally wrong, the GOP on the hand view it as mortal sin. But it seems like every other week a new rupub is being outed. Bill Mahr said it best when he said that the next GOP convention needs to be held in a giant closet. Fair enough, but not similar to the type of corruption trouble as Rep. Ney. Many Republicans do not approve of gays and gay marriage. Many Dem leaders in congress also have voted against gay marriage, enacted the Defense of Marriage Act, the don't ask, don't tell policy, etc. But there are the Log Cabin Republicans, however. Mark Foley could have just admitted he was gay without losing his position in congress. When a Republican member comes out as a result of a sex scandal with an underage page, that is a bit different. I think it is hypocritical to support gay marriage, but not allow polygamy, or even marriage between relatives. I think the same arguments apply - what goes on in private...doesn't affect my marriage...why shouldn't 2 or 3 people in a loving relationship be allowed...However, I've been called lots of nasty names when I make the comparison. I feel that if it is OK to deny a polygamist their marriage rights, then I should be able to oppose gay marriage without being labeled a 'phobe. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  11. If you BOTHERED to read the post I was responding to, in which Royd wrote: "Education doesn't make you a leader. A lot of people go to school because they believe that it will entitle them to more money for less work. Learning something from the ground up makes you a far better leader than someone who just read a book." then my question to him makes more sense, doesn't it? You got the wrong end of the stick. So, are you saying that you do understand why they would require a college degree of officers? People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  12. I wish Kerry had made that argument. The military votes Republican because there will be more war, and therefore more need for their services (meaning = they are warmongers concerned with the need for their services more than their own safety or even what is good for the country). Also, they vote Republican because they are more likely to get better weapon systems (meaning = Dems don't support new weapon systems as much). At least the second part is quite true. Kerry insults them, then issues a defiant "I will apologize to no one", then apologizes to those that are stupid enough to have misinterpreted his remarks, but only on his website. In response to my question of why the military favors Republicans, you've proposed a different reason, not that they are brainwashed dummies, but that they are warmongers. I would like to see the Democratic leadership adopt that position. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  13. I thought the issue was what is legal in England. I would expect the seal to be required for a visiting foreign jumper. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  14. It just surprises me that you would even wonder why it is required. Isn't there a college of business where you teach, don't they offer communication degrees, even political science? You might as well ask the professors over there at the other colleges why such a field of study is offered. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  15. I thought it was the Shriners, or the Freemasons, or the Knights of Templar...who are we to blame? People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  16. Right - structural engineering should be taught by high school dropouts. Our bridges and airplanes would be much safer. You're the one that wondered why all branches of the US military require a college education of their officers. Is it only technical/engineering disciplines that are justified in requiring a college education? Are there other colleges at your institution besides the college of engineering? Seems hypocritical to me. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  17. I disagree. If the federal requirements mandate following the manufacturer instructions it does take precidence. If the manufacturer said the sealing was optional or didn't mention in in their manual...then it would be optional...but since its in the manufacturer instructions, it is mandated, it simply isn't set forth by the government. No, without the law requiring a rigger to follow the mfg instructions, everything would be optional. If the laws of England specifically allow that the seal may be omitted, then that supersedes a general requirement to follow mfg instructions. I don't know what the English law is and I am not a lawyer, but I don't see how you could see it any other way, and apparently so do English authorities, because it is common for it to be omitted, correct? People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  18. If the laws in England state that sealing of the reserve is optional, then that would take precedence over a general requirement to follow mfg instructions. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  19. Morals are purely internally generated. GOP does not have the right to dictate anyone else's morality except its own, although it likes to tell all of us how to behave. So when the GOP gets caught with its pants down over infractions of its own moral code, it deserves the "HYPOCRITE" label. Why not just answer the question? You're the one that decided to pick on Ney for his crime, making a big deal about hypocrisy. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  20. I'm sure that as a minister (you are, right?) you can differentiate between laws, ethics and morals. We are all obliged to obey laws. We voluntarily accept codes of ethics of our professions or organizations, but having accepted them we should abide by them. Morals are purely internally generated. Only one party claims to have a monopoly on moral rectitude and wishes to impose its version on all of us, and that's the GOP. So when the GOP gets caught with its pants down over infractions of its own moral code, it deserves the "HYPOCRITE" label. When even FOX News runs an article highlighting the hypocrisy in the GOP, it should tell you something. You are the one that picked on Ney's crime. Yes, what Ney did was a crime. Exactly what moral standards that have been violated by Repubs would the Dems exclude themselves from following. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  21. You're the one that admitted what your standards are. To which post do you refer? I think my standards are quite clear - I do not like crooks, pedophiles or hypocrites. You apparently don't like crooks or pedophiles but are OK with hypocrites. I guess I just have higher expectations than you What matters is that Ney was a crook. The fact that he is also a hypocrite is unimportant in comparison. So, as you said about Daley, he makes no pretense about not being a crook, so he is not a hypocrite. Of course Daley and other elected Democrats would not admit to that (although their actions do make their tolerance of crooks/pedophiles in their midst quite clear), but it is insightful that you would admit to it. If a Dem congressman had committed the same acts as Ney did, would Democrats be expecting him to resign? Unless you are prepared to say no, then your complaint about hypocrisy is not relevant. If you say yes, then you would rightly face criticism for low standards. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  22. You're the one that admitted what your standards are. Aren't you willing to defend your position? People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  23. He didn't actually say they didn't have to obey the law, just that in his opinion he is not a hypocrite. It was quite clear in his post: I'm not actually sure that what Stubbs did was a crime, I don't know how the age of consent affects that. Stubbs was vigorously defended by his colleagues, though, and was thoroughly defiant of the criticism for having sex with an underage page. Although the Dems defended Stubbs back then, I don't think they would actually admit to having the same low standards as Kallend. Instead of admitting to the low standards, they just tolerate without much complaint the crooks of their party such as William Jefferson. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  24. Thanks for making your position clear. I would have thought that even Democrats would have agreed that they should obey the law. That would include laws regarding stealing and those involving pedophilia/child predator type of stuff. But, you've made it clear what your standards are, and what you think the standards of Democrats in general are. It is absolutely amazing that you're willing to admit that. If, for instance, a Republican congressman that opposed abortion was found to have had an abortion, that would be a case where a complaint of hypocrisy would be valid, but to admit that they don't even have standards that prohibit stealing or having sex with an underage page, that is really something! Thanks. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  25. Hypocrisy is the act of pretending to have beliefs, virtues and feelings that one does not truly possess. The word derives from the late Latin hypocrisis and Greek hupokrisis both meaning play-acting or pretence. The word is arguably derived from hypo- meaning small, + krinein meaning to decide/to dispute. A classic example of a hypocritical act is to denounce another for carrying out some action whilst carrying out the same action oneself. You had some reason to suspect that the definition of hypocrisy was in dispute? If a Dem congressman had committed the same acts as Ney did, would he be expected to resign? Unless you are prepared to say no, then your complaint is not relevant. I've asked a simple question, are you willing to answer it? People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
