My memory of the HID issue is that the lights are very effective in clear conditions for the driver of the vehicle with the HID lights, but the frequency/color of the light is fairly isolated to a small range of color, which unfortunately is irritating to the nervous system of most people. That was the upshot of some research I saw a while back, perhaps they were biased, but it appeared reasonable with some real testing to back it up. HID lights are considered a must for upscale vehicles, you just can't design a luxury/sport car without them anymore. I don't understand how you can make that conclusion. The friction of the webbing pulling through the rings will be different, and it is not related to it becoming stiff over time.
