You were logged in to make this post so your password seems to be working... Your "original password" is the one that got sent to you in the email when you requested a temp password. In other words - when you work with temp passwords then your original password = your temp password. Safe swoops Sangiro

This forum's guidelines are getting fuzzy...
sangiro replied to BigM's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Michael, you're guessing wrong. A handful of moderators who I can "relief of their duties" at any time is way down on my list of things that I would see as possible threats to the longevity of Dropzone.com. I suggest anyone interested in the topic read Clay Shirky's article - A group is its own worst enemy. (thanks John!) It's a great synopsis of why and how online communities fail and succeed. Believe me, I don't take this lightly nor do I sit back and let moderators abuse their privileges and take it wherever they want to. I'm deliberate and quite informed about the decisions I make. As for moderation levels: I recently looked at a bunch of other successful forums. Emphasis on "successful". Dropzone.com is incredibly under-moderated by comparison to other forums. Take a look at Rockclimbing.com. They have more than 40 moderators! Take a look at their terms of use, which is basically their forum rules.... it's huge! Still it works. Now take a look at rec.skydiving..... I also think your statement lacks understanding of what is conducive to "clear communication" online. People still incorrectly assume that no control or almost no moderation is what's good for online communities and results in "clear communication". It's quite the opposite. It may be what's good for individuals (sometimes) but it is simply not what is good for communities in a virtual world characterized by ubiquity and anonymity. If you think so, you're just wrong. You may not like it, but we should not put it forward as the working model if years of experience on the internet has proven it to be fatally flawed on many levels. Again, take a look at the article mentioned above. We will continue to keep moderation light on Dropzone.com to keep the conversations and exchange of ideas free. We will also continue to make decisions that I know will sometimes prove to be individually unpopular but healthy for the community. Let's talk about skydiving! -

Hey - not a swap at all. Sorry buddy. Just posted that for others to learn from.

Will be fixed back to the old numbers... An upgrade quirk.

Pilot Chute handle tore off from Pilot Chute. Pilot chute stayed in the pocket, and there was no pull on the reserve. Russian PPKU AAD did fire but the reserve did not launch.

TK, Did you check the new page here? I know there's an old page on the site as well with some old articles. I'll remove that. http://www.dropzone.com/safety/Exit/ Safe swoops Sangiro

Looks changed to me. Refresh your browser. This has been discussed ad infinitum in this forum. Please do a search before you post.

Not gonna happen.

Yup - I add a little bonus from time to time... Safe swoops Sangiro

Totally optional. I actually think taking it a little "over the top" as Tom said (and I think it may be as well) could be an incentive for people to actually try and get it done. It's always cool top be one of the "few users who've actually been validated". May add incentives like a forum for validated users only etc.... Just some thoughts.... Safe swoops Sangiro

Heya all, If you get an email that seems to come from Dropzone.com like the one below, please delete it without opening the email or the attachment: The attachment (in my case called Documents.zip) contains the Win32.Beagle.J@mm virus. This email did not originate on the Dropzone.com servers nor did it come from our "team". There are a lot of pretty nasty viruses going around. Make sure your anti-virus software and definition files are up to date. Oh yes, and your account is not going to be disabled either.

John, How about this for a suggestion. Lay down a set of requirements that a user have to meet to be flagged as a "validated" user. I wouldn't mind if these were rather stringent. At least we'll know that people who've been flagged as validated has met those requirements and it may keep the group of applicants smaller. It could include things like: Entire profile completed with real name and verifiable email address Upload scans of your ratings, licenses and certifications. (USPA card scan or certificates from your country acceptable) Provide proof of your number of years in the sport (again, number of USPA membership years, scan of your logbook etc could do) Provide proof of your jump experience including the number of jumps in the past year. (log book scans?) Provide the nicks of at least 5 Dropzone.com members who can vouch for your identity.A user may not be able to provide all this information but we'd expect to see most of it. This attempts to make validating your identity simply a by-product of actually proving your skill and experience levels. It would be very easy to flag these users in the forums. It's a bit more out there... but I think the problem is on the one hand with anonymity, but more so with trying to figure out "who knows what they're talking about"... Safe swoops Sangiro

Hey - It's actually like that on most static pages. You'll see the header in the forums is actually the only one that changes in that area depending on whether you're logged in or not. It's an experiment that I'm doing and I will likely find a "resource friendly" way to check the login status of a user on every page in the future. Safe swoops Sangiro

Folks, please read this post again. I have just looked though this forum and there are way too many non-skydiving related posts popping up here. Please help us to keep it clean by posting to the appropriate forum.

Dave, There are quite a few requests for forums out there. I do agree that it may be time to start adding some of these. I am however also thinking about how to add them without making the list of forums go on forever. The current thinking is that there may be sections of forums that are not visible from the main page. For example: we may have a Safety and Training section with 1 or 2 forums available on the main page and then a link to other topical forums where you need to drill down one level before you see them. Adding new forums will also increase the workload on the moderators - I think they may have to much on their hands already. Jim - I hear your concerns about abuse. Their was also a request for a forum for certified riggers only. In both cases their is an option to make the forums available to those groups only. If the idea is that they share information amongst themselves then a closed forum is not a bad idea. Public discussions can still happen in the open forums... ...just a bunch of thoughts. Anything is possible, but what would be the added value of doing that?

Can you try to attach a very small picture to your next post? (like your own avatar). See if that works. If it does, then we know it's a size issue, if not, then it's something else in which case I'll ask (like AD did) - what platform and browser are you using? Safe swoops Sangiro

You need to ask your doctor about that.... Safe swoops Sangiro

Just a note here to everyone finding this thread who uses a personal firewall. Most firewall software packages allow you to set up some form of "trusted" site. Add Dropzone.com to that list and you should be able to see the images and continue to get the benefits and protection that a firewall offers. Safe swoops Sangiro
