Heya all, Thanks for your patience during the upgrade. About a year ago I added a second dedicated server to help carry the load on Dropzone.com. As you've noticed over the past few weeks we've outgrown those two servers. The time had come to move Dropzone.com to the next level. I'm proud to let you know that we're now running on a cluster of 5 servers! Although you may not see much of a difference up front, the immediate impact on performance should be obvious. We are continueing to tweak the performance and work on a few outstanding issues. In the medium term this will give me the scalability needed to do some cool new things and to continue growing the site. A huge "Thank you" to all Premier Members. Although we'll all benefit, without you this would not have been possible. Thank you! As with any upgrade we may see a few glitches and hic-ups over the next few days. If you do, drop me a post in the Errors and Bug Reports forum. For the geeks who are slightly curious as to what we have under the hood, I've attached a rough diagram of the cluster. I not going to publish all the specs but I will say that everything runs in pure 64 bit mode and at a high level the five machines are: 2 Application Servers: Dual Opteron Processors/2GB RAM (per machine) File Server: Dual Opteron/2 GB RAM Mail Server: Dual MP 2400/1 GB RAM Database Server: Dual Opteron/2 GB RAMHope this helps. Enjoy!

Are you using the DZ.com IP or using a work-arounf on your IP? The DZ.com IP address changed last night due to server upgrades. Safe swoops Sangiro

Site Maintenance Downtime - Sunday 4:00 PM (PST), 14 November 2004
sangiro replied to sangiro's topic in Announcements
Heya all, Dropzone.com has outgrown the current 2 servers and I need to take the site down for a short while on Sunday to upgrade the servers. This will sort out the performance issues we've been seeing (proxy errors etc). The expected downtime on Sunday, 14 November 2004 is 30 minutes but will hopefully be shorter. Start of downtime: 4:00 PM PST (US West Coast) 6:00 PM CST (US Central) 7:00 PM EST (US East Coast) Midnight GMT (UK) I'll give more detail about the upgrade when we're done, but I'm certain this will make a dramatic difference to the performance and hopefully overall user experience on Dropzone.com. I apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience. -

Heya all, Welcome to the new Dropzone.com forum for wind tunnel discussions. The purpose of this forum is to discuss tunnel related training and flight techniques and to get information about and discuss feedback on different tunnels across the world. Although we understand that there are a limited number of organizations involved in providing these services, and that their names will be prominent in this forum (not unlike the Wing Suit forum) this is not a place for companies to peddle their wares. The no advertising rule applies here as in all other forums. Tunnel Camps should be posted to the Calendar. Feel free to come back here and tell us about what you learned or give a report on how the camp went. The forum is also not the place for individuals to advertise available tunnel time or open slots. Please use the Classifieds for that. By sticking to these simple guidelines you can help ensure that this becomes a useful resource about tunnel flight and is not over-run by promotions and advertising. SkymonkeyONE is in da house! Have fun!

I think you may be wronmg about this. I think a Tunnel Forum has merit. I'm not convinced about tunnel time in the profile though. At ths same time I can't see how it will do any harm. Tunnel time to me is tunnel time. It's not freefall time but it does say something... (it may say different things to different people) Safe swoops Sangiro

If it shows you the screen in Step 1 then it is not recognizing your login information. I suggest you use the log out button in Step 2 to actually log out and reset you cookies. Close all your browser windows, open them again and log back in. Then go back and check the ad again. That should reset your cookies. Make sure your computer settings are set to accept cookies. Can you try this again please. I'm hoping that this has been fixed. Safe swoops Sangiro

This jumper was the first of five skydivers to jump out of the plane. For an unknown reason, his main parachute deployed prematurely as he approached the door to exit. The chute got caught in the plane's tail and blocked the rudder, causing the aircraft

Ron - You continue to amaze me with how bad your judgment and timing can be. You won't believe me, but I can live with that. Everyone, please don't let this thread spiral out of control. Safe swoops Sangiro

Please contact me rather than threaten to abuse the system. I will have no problems sticking this to the top for a while. However, while you will find a sympathetic ear for your cause you will not find it for this method. It's pretty easy to see why allowing a group of users to decide they are going to bump a thread all the time till they get their way is a bad idea. The end does not justify the means. We're not going to create a bad precedent. It's a tough call to make because your cause is a good one. Just drop me a note if you have a request.

I think there are very few people out there who are motivated solely by there post numbers. The titles was a different story. There may be some, but I'm not convinced that removing functionality like that from all users is worth the difference it will make. I don't think it will make a blip on the bandwidth usage if 20 people decide they now want to post 10 posts a day less because they can not see how much they've posted. Thanks for the suggestion and I know where you're coming from. Problem with small measures like that is it turns into "death by a thousand cuts". It's does not address the problem in a way that really makes an impact. This is not that big a deal to me. I'll upgrade the servers. I don't want people to waste my bandwidth with rubbish but at the same time I want them to post and have fun, and I want them to be able to do that on a site that flies! It's a growth problem. It's a good problem to have. Safe swoops Sangiro

This is of course something you can already do. I've emailed you about this. Please make sure your image filenames does not have any commas in them. You have files that are named like: my,__file,-name,__here.jpg Remove all commas (or any special characters) before you upload your photos and you will have no problem. Using special charaters in filenames is in general not a good idea.

Wow, I thought those were 4 pretty easy steps. Which one are you having trouble figuring out? Safe swoops Sangiro
