You're invited to Alaska. We have approx. 100,000 black bears. I'm sure we could put you on one. You've gotta place to stay.... JOhnny

Once again, the peanut gallery chides in. Like I said, if you don't approve of hunting...fine. I'm sure there are things in your life that I don't approve of. DO I tell you about them...no. There are plenty of skydivers who hunt and plenty who don't hunt. As my last question went....how much money do you pitch in for conservation each year? I bet I pitch in more than you. Ever heard of the Pittman-Robertson Act? No?Then go bug somebody else. By the way, the shot was taken at 15 yards. Do you have the testis to sneak up on a bear from 15 yards away? Didn't think so.( U.K. riding a horse around shooting at a fox with dogs hot on its trail....yeah, real sport there. ) That is the glory of living in this country, there is freedom to hunt, whether for sport, or food. Some reason why I have an Aussie and a Brit bashing a freedom that so many of us in the U.S. enjoy? Don't be jealous. I'm proud of my hunting background. If you don't like it...just don't say anything at all. It'll leave all of us happy. Johnny

I saw it in the paper today. Damn! Hard to believe. 2 Alaska skydivers in 6 weeks. God bless their families and their service to our country. BSBD, Semper Fi, Johnny

The bear was a young 4 year old. I wish I would've been able to take the HUGE one that got away. Up here, you can't hunt on the same day that you fly. That BIG bear was on the beach 20 yards from us on the beach when we stepped off of the floatplane. Johnny P.S. The bear squared at 7'6"...about 500-600#

Sorry Brian, I've been running into quite a large anti-hunting crowd lately. Believe it or not, I too was raised to eat anything I harvested. I didn't say I did not eat this bear. I said that it tastes like crap. The sausage was tolerable. I didn't take the whole thing. Ever since I moved to Alaska a few years ago, I realized that they have their Fish and Game laws down to a science. I wish more states would follow suit and use the model that Alaska has built. I for one, wouldn't harvest wolves, coyotes, or any other thing that is considered inedible. Strangely enough, I just found out that Porcupine is pretty darn good. I've come across lots of porkies, and I plan on trying a couple of them out.....they say they taste like chicken...of course. Johnny

How much money have you donated to conservation this year? How much do you know about Kodiak? Ever been there? Do you know the natives on Kodiak? They cull the herd also, don't eat the meat, are you going to blast the indigenous people for doing that for thousands of years? I posted the pics because I was proud of my harvest. If you don't like them, that is fine. That is your own opinion, I will respect that. But, I know several skydivers who are hunters and would appreciate my exploits. Thank you very much, Johnny

Its not the permit that costs money. Kodiak bear is a Draw permit. A lottery is held once a year. 150 permits are awarded out of 10's of thousands that apply. As a nonresident, there is a guide requirement which costs a total of about 16-17,000 per hunt. I did a do-it-yourself hunt and got away with about 6,000. Fish & Game have this hunt for the conservation of the bear population of the island. There are appox. 3,000 bear on the island and F&G states not more than that can survive adequately. So they dish out 150 permits a year for the lucky soul.

Yeah.. He is a fat little porker, ain't he? Brown Bear meat tastes like crap. Unless it is made into sausage or pepporoni. Black bear meat tastes really good in the fall when they are into the berries. Very sweet meat. Yummmmmmm....can't wait till fall! Johnny

Just the angle of the camera...i suppose. Looking at it head on, its not smiling...its more like.."i'm pissed, you shot me!" Johnny

I harvested my first Kodiak Bear last year in April of 06'. I just got the rug back.... Johnny P.s. also pictured is the BIG one that got away.

I'm the one who gives you the pill. Its called I-131 NaI. It has a half-life of 8 days. Depends on the amount you receive, you'll have to stay away from people for a few days to limit their exposure to you. No sex, flushing the toilet twice after every use. Washing your clothes seperately from others clothes. Don't plan on getting pregnant for at least 6 months. Stay away from even your pets. You will feel practically no side effects, with the exception of "thyroid storm". After your treatment, your M.D. will monitor your Thyroid levels and determine if the therapy was enough to kill your thyroid, if not, you'll have another one. Eventually, once you are hypothyroid, you'll have to take thyroid supplements for the rest of your life. Its far better than being hyper and all the maladies that go along with that. Johnny

Welcome to Alaska! This happens approx. 1000 times per year in Alaska.

I was a cop for 5 years. LOVED every bit of it. I still would like to get back into it. I jumped ship cuz they don't pay well enough. Depends where you are, of course. I was making 35K a year as a cop. I decided to stay full time Nuclear Med and make 95K a year. I am ready to go back and be a cop at least Part time just to keep my feet wet. Nothing like making solid arrests. Remember, patrol can and definitely will lead up to something HUGE while on a "routine" traffic stop. We, the older guys, always looked down on the younger rookies who only wanted to give out traffic citations. I only gave citations to somebody who had an attitude, or, was doing something really stupid...like 86mph in a 25mph zone. I lived for the big bust. Loved "protecting" little kids and the elderly. I'll be back again someday, but I can't conceivably cut down my paychecks by 2/3. Although most cops don't do it for the money, when I had the choice to take home $900 every 2 weeks vs. $2500 every two weeks, common sense kicked in. Good luck in your endeavours. You will LOVE the job. Just remember, treat people the way you want to be treated. Don't lose your cool. Don't be badge heavy. and ALWAYS make it a point to go home to your family every night. I regret to inform you, but Jeffrey Bisson died a few days ago in Iraq. He was an avid skydiver up here in Alaska. He was stationed at Ft.Richardson. I know that he jumped quite a few places to include ELoy and I believe Perris? BSBD, Johnny

I actually love my Toshiba. Bought it 3 years ago. It is "still" up-to-date on everything. 3.0 Ghz. 100G HD; 1 GB Ram. 15.4 inch Tru-Brite screen, plus all the bells and whistles. I've NEVER had a problem with the Toshiba Satellite! Johnny

Really??I thought Alaska was the only place on earth. hmmmmm..... In answer to your statement, the weather has only been documented here in Alaska for the last 100 years (give or take a decade). Does that 100 years equal a trend? Or does the last couple million years equal a trend?

Sure it gets cold in the winter. But where is Al Gore now? He sure as heck isn't in Alaska. Its the coldest its been in 2 decades. The average high for this time of year is about 30 deg F. It hasn't hit above 20 this month (maybe 1 day), and it has been averaging 5 deg F in the daytime, and -15 F at night. Its been about 25-30 deg below normal for the past 7 weeks! I don't mind it getting cold now and then, but this is January weather (and that only lasts about 2 weeks). Fairbanks has been averaging about 35 below zero for the past month. They usually don't even come close to that until January! Where's Al Gore now?

Thanks for the compliment. Nope not a photographer. As a matter of fact, all those were taken with a 4.0MP Kodak. The thing about Alaska is that every photo taken looks professionally done. This is an outdoorsperson/photographers/hunters paradise! Come for a visit! Now that I think about it, maybe they were using the piss mound as some sort of saltlick. Johnny

2 days ago I woke up to find 2 moose in the back yard. One of them must've had a craving for dog piss. I captured on video (not very good quality), a moose licking a mound of snow, that my dogs use to piss on. He licked this piss mound for several minutes. Any clue why? Any wildlife biologist types out there???? Johnny http://s104.photobucket.com/albums/m200/skydiver_99654/?action=view¤t=MOV00005.flv
