  1. The rich don't 'get' more resources, they do 'pay' for more gas etc. Buying something doesn't equate to the government 'giving' it to you. That's a spurious argument. As one of the 'rich', what do you get that the poor don't? That's your contention. I'll even start the ball rolling with a real example although a very weak one. After 80 something K dollars of taxable income, you no longer pay social security. What 'social' programs are targetted to you, as a representative of the rich, that the poor are not eligible to receive? It's a simple question. Edit: Anyone want to start a separate list of programs targetted to the poor (say making less than $25K/year, that the rich - > $60K/year, and the filthy rich - > $250K/year are not eligible)? We could then compare the size of the lists. At least Billvon is honest - rich make more and we should take it and give to the poor "they can afford it and it helps the economy". ... 2. "understand" really does seem to have a different context for different people. of course in your job semantics is huge. for me, they result in a lot of wasted time when actions are easy to judge I'll agree to disagree on this one since the perspectives are very different ... ATA refuses rig

A friend was to fly to Perris area yesterday and ATA refused to let her take on her rig. They also refused to let her check it. She had all the documents with her (airline policies, TSA note, cypress info, etc). I have no further details. She will notify USPA. FYI ... 6. Of course make it easier, but never zero. Taxes are ownership of the country. Even if they pay just a little bit, it would make for better citizens. What about Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers, you can't vote unless you've served in the military? How would this crowd react to that? ... 7. Do you really use more of the resources? I'd love to see a study here that DOESN'T involve special tax breaks. (remember, this part of the thread was started by me noting that there are too many loopholes and special interest exceptions) Just the basics: Everyone gets benefit from defense of the country. Everyone can visit a state park. Everyone can have their childres go to school (citizens). I don't know many rich that get free food, shelter, etc from the government. Aren't most 'social' programs only allowed for those who aren't rich? Maybe if the government didn't have their fingers in so many areas, your issues would go away just as easy as my issues. I very much doubt you are guilty for scraping into the rich category and I hope nobody tries that line. It's cheap and pointless, just like saying someone CAN'T understand the poor just because they aren't one. ... 9. You have to split the altitude up into the airspeed layers, calculate the time each object spends in each layer, use that to calculate drift. add it all up to get total movement. It's just accounting...... anyway, aren't you supposed to wait until the ball is at a 45 degree angle from the plane before letting the next one go? (I'm kidding, I'm kidding) ... 11. No matter what happens, you can always make it complicated even if it doesn't have to be. If you make more, you should be able to buy, save, invest more. Again, make the personal exemption big enough, and the poor have a significantly lower rate. But everyone gets the same exemption, everyone gets the same tax rate on the remaining income..... As for your car example, we don't need to be micromanaging people's decision to that level. Sales taxes can be dealt with locally. It's the individual's decisions on how they spend and save and they must consider the consequences of any decision. Your discussion leads down the road to making people who make more, pay more for the same stuff. That's goofy. Next time you go out to lunch, insist that everyone lay out their gross income figures. Then insist you all pay accordingly. It's that simple. For taxes, allowing anyone to pay nothing is very dangerous, nobody appreciates a free ride and it generates a bad mentality. Even contributing a little bit give ownership rather than dependence. (I'm not poor now, but we were dirt poor when I was a kid so please don't play that card.) ... 14. Who voted Clark? He's not even part of the 4-way tie right now. I'd like to see Lieberman vs Bush in the end, at least the contest would pretend to be clean and not shrill. Gephardt might be civil, but something's not right there. won't happen per quade's comment - what i'd like isn't the poll, I think Kerry has momentum ... 15. Right now, we don't know who his competition is nor where they stand. Let the dems pick a single candidate and then let's find out what he stands for, rather than just what he doesn't stand for. Can't tell that right now as they are pandering to the angry part of their crowd for the party nomination. Then we can compare and pick the best candidate. Until the ballot allows a negative vote for someone as an option, it's pretty crappy to vote 'against' someone if there is --not a better choice--. In other words, it's stupid to try and vote someone 'out of office'. They are already in. What you're really doing is voting someone in, so you need to pick that person. Pick the best candidate whoever that is. You always vote for someone, never against. No matter how much you'd like to. Seems this poll is a few months premature for anything useful other than bashing. ... Lasix?

  19. How can you POSSIBLY understand what rock climbers feel? It's so incredibly special, that unless you do it, you must be some kind of sub-human without any real understanding of what it is to live life to the fullest. 1 - new skydivers are like that, some longtimers 2 - I'm not good with sarcasm, or grammer 3 - Likely this is just a semantics isssue in the poll as you can argue anything isn't the 'same' if you drill down into the details enough. (oddly related, but I find it distressing that when a student doesn't make the cut, the cliche is to recommend bowling or golf - it's more of an ego rub for the instructor since in this context it's obviously an insult to the student and bowling/golf) ... 22. Can 'anyone'? sure Can 'everyone'? no way It's just a sport (although I'm pretty obsessive about it and think it's cool). So find someone obsessive in a another initially adrenaline/addictive sport and you'll find someone who understands. What about - "Who thinks being a skydiver makes them better than other people?" That'll ID the nuts 'in the sport for the wrong reasons'. These types of polls can bring out that question sometimes (check out the who's the better trackers poll in FF you can see some of the us vs them types (just adding fuel, pay no attention)) ... 23. And here's the winner. Isn't this the real problem? Different taxes for different groups? That means different incomes, that means special cuts for big businesses, it spans both parties. For households, I like a single rate with exemptions. Nothing else. Either that, or take the total expense of the government and divide by the number of people and make everyone pay the same - hard to make that work though. Same rate is doable. ... If that argument follows, then no one who's ever been president should comment on Clinton or Bush, no one who's ever been in the oil industry should talk about Halliburton, no one who's ever treated women like objects should judge Jesse Jackson or Bill Clinton, no one who's never killed should be on a jury of a suspected murderer, and so on and so forth. ... Monday Quiz

7 BTW (just to be a smart ass as I know Winsor understands this - from one of the quizzes, space balls don't have an opening altitude, which means descent rate is constant, thus the different wind speed layers don't affect separation.....it's all about how much time each group spends in each of different wind layers - or better yet some integral of that, but that's just a little too much for the weekend) ...
