I'm not a fan of bunching up people into groups. It's the individual that counts. Still think the assumption sucks. That might be a great kid or really is a 'Loser'. You just DON'T know and can't be fair making that call no more than assume the 2nd kid is a crook because he's from a 'bad' school - it's the same thing. You don't have enough information. ... This is where we cross paths, you are willing to make a judgement call on a complete stranger based solely on putting him into a group. Good or bad. That kind of bias and generalization sucks and I think you are wrong and unfair. It's exactly the same basic thought as sexism, racism and all those other 'isms out there. ... Cool, Ron. I can see it. it's like the shear move of a two way piece, each member of the 3-way 'takes' his turns with just a tad overlap instead of distinct move.... pPOint just hops forward and lands in the slot and the piece closes..... ... 1300 is 50 greater than 1250 - not a significant difference (?). Nowhere on the admissions form should be any statement of income. That way you avoid discrimination in 'either' direction. If the school wants to have an additional factor where students' performances are predictive based on which school they came from, then that is a different factor not relating to the SAT. But it could be used. But not for pity, but to ensure students with a high predictive chance of doing better should get higher consideration. Problem is our factors typically are used to make less qualified people eligible instead of more qualified people..... I know it's harsh. Fix the public schools or give vouchers it's too late to try to retroactively fix some perceived social issue at the college level. Would it be any more fair to reject that 1300 score without ever meeting the individual as it would to reject the 1250 without meeting them? The comment begs that interpretation. ... So Nick - your better question might be to PM one of the better competitors here (Mario, Ron, Melanie) and ask if they know 'why' the big dogs don't do that. Hi BB - You're clear, really. You're doing what we do. (he means 'backing' up because since that's the finished position, some solos might think backing around gives them an edge instead of a blind spot) It's really an inward facing orbit - think 'sideslide' (close enough for description purposes) instead of 'diagonal' and it's easier to explain in writing. That's what I'm taking from your description. When a team is really starting out fresh, I just ask the ind flyer to look for the 'cat' picture on the catch and 'guarantee' that first grip before letting their body swing around. Then they definitely don't 'back around' but move forward instead. Later they can turn their body around to a more finished position right before the catch. (Either way, I like to 'think' about eyeballing that inside gripper rather than thinking about the outside gripper to make sure it caught) Whenever my point (ind flyer on 2) tries to back around, 50% of the time he misses the catch and I (OC) get him first - this is too dangerous for us if we miss and have momentum. Now he tries to avoid making the turn too soon now. It's one of our better blocks now. It's about the only one I don't mind having some momentum on at the catch. If you want to avoid it, spin the 3-way faster (drop those inside knees) then the solo flyer doesn't get rushed so much and can guarantee the catch. (For Nick later) ... Hi - You been out lately? Nice picture BTW. You know I check this place during the day. I'm going to actually push a LOT more random work this year for us, got one guy to the tunnel camp in Nov and then more in April but my other two teammates can't afford to go yet... I'm assuming you already have a 'continuity' plan and meant to say a 'practice' plan. so... I'll PM my thing from last year and you can ask questions then. It's on Excel. Is that ok? You guys will be great this year. Mario's site is pretty good too. There's some other posts on this forum also from about a month ago with great advice from Mario and Ron, hard to beat that. He can orbit all the way around if you want (not practical, quicker to spin the donut and move at the same time). The 360 must be completed 'relative' to the other (albeit 1-way) 'piece'. Heck, I bet if you had the team skill, you could even do a little vertical hop provide the center point isn't violated - but I don't think I've seen this on any vids of block 2 yet by the big guys. I think all the blocks can be treated that way - turns must be completed relative to the center point of each piece. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still rather new and haven't done other than regional meets.... Our point doesn't 'back up' either in this case, just side slides around to make the initial catch and then let's the other bit close from momentum/or a little extra turn/stop at the end. Best thing to do is watch the video clips of the big guys and see how much they cheat on the verticals and moves, etc. They likely have the correct balance figured out for their individual/piece flying skills. I have the full dive pool in bits and pieces for both the Knights and Majik - it's great to learn from. ... Repeat above as it still pertains. "Like the governor and the Senators fawn over them and the mayor fawns all over them, therefore the police chief (who reports to the mayor) fawns all over them, and so on down the line. If they want something from the city they just phone the mayor" I agree this is a problem. But if 'fawning' is the resources you are talking about, I can't measure that either. As an engineer and statistics convert, I don't think it exists unless you can measure it accurately....... We should stop, I actually do know what you are trying to say, I just don't think it's the real issue and you do. I consider it a symptom while you consider it the disease. We both want to treat what we think is the disease. I think make the system simple and perceived cheating won't be allowed. Then all the fawning in the world is no biggie as it's just cosmetic compared to real issues..... ... I've never heard of a cypres firing during a downplane. What kind of speeds do 'you' hit during a Downplane? I didn't think it was an issue unless you had a student cypres.... What's the point of breaking a downplane above 750 (unless you're practicing docks and fun with a newbie and want to do several, or in a bad spot)? My crw rig doesn't have a cypres. I don't have an opinion either way, though. Just cheap on rig #2. Depends on the problem you are experiencing on whether you wish you had it or not. Now the RSL is a completely different discussion with some pretty strong views. Me? I'd rather not have it connected, but I couldn't argue either side very well. ... And doesn't that in itself argue for a simpler tax code rather than just more 'group' specific allowances and the resulting complex loop holes. These efforts to be fair by making things more complicated are well intentioned, but invariably have the opposite results. edit: I don't believe I know anyone in that bracket, if I did, they aren't forthcoming about it nor would I ask. General response - 1 - I've never been stopped at a museum or park and waited while they reviewed my tax returns and then refused admittance due to low income. There's a diffenence between between having a policy that directly refuses service based on being poor and just not being able to afford to go. I don't have an issue with pay for use in these areas. (e.g., I don't like the idea of people in Duluth having to support an art museum in Minneapolis?) 2 - But there are tons of programs where exactly that (tax returns are reviewed to decide eligibility) occurs and the 'rich' (here let's read income greater than $25K?) are excluded. I'm not saying all cases of this are unfair, I'm just saying that it's not a case of the rich having a 'seven course meal' and the poor only having 'water and a roll' at the government trough. But, leave it to Kev to at least make a sincere effort to identify something in that category. I like his arguments, they are always reasoned. ... Hi Wendy - I'm so tired. It's not a matter of changing the laws, just thoughts on what is fair and why people think that way. What's wrong with having more income = more disposable income? I also noted that a hefty personal exemption for basic living expenses is a good fit to a flat tax to address much of what you mentioned. So we are likely very close in thought, or more than you think. But the discussion digressed from there. You might be directing your comment at the other guy on this post. Look up and you'll see his name. Stay warm, make some jumps for me. Yesterday was -6 F on the way to work. ... Show me where I said pollution is funny. Check out my position on smoking and that pretty much speaks to it. Better example. Bankruptcy = another loophole let's the people guilty off the hook. That's an issue. Your solution is to tax everyone at high income off because you are too lazy to sort out the responsible from the irresponsible. Individuals have actions that require response not economics groups. This one size fits all mentality isn't a good fix, it's lazyness. In your example, the small business owner with a few millions in assets (i.e., rich) who follows the existing laws to the letter, had nothing to do with the 'bad' men from the plant, participates in the community, etc. must also pay for the cleanup. Is that right? And just to be glib here - unemployed and poor people don't pay taxes..... If they did and had a sense of ownership in the country, maybe that corporation wouldn't have been allowed by the locals to get away with what they did in the first place. Also glib here - I don't believe the poor and homeless create superfund sites, your words. Irresponsible corporations do. It's a great hypothetical (not so hypothetical, actually happens) but it shows that you must hold individuals to task, not broad categories of people. ...
