Seeing the tag "Newbie" next to Mike's name is just as unsettling as when BC responded to a thread a few months ago. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

---sympathetic response from a bicyclist. Is 'whitelining' when the motorcycle runs down between lanes instead driving in the lane passing the slower moving cars - especially during rush hour etc.? If so, then I don't see whitelining as the smartest thing to do. I wouldn't think of blocking because I don't want the truck to get scratched, but it looks unsafe and stupid. I'd 'guess' it's also against the law. If you are a vehicle in traffic, then be in the traffic. You need a lane to pass. IMO, whitelining has the same level of courtesy as someone running down the edge of the road during a jam or a single in the car pool lane, etc. As far the guy edging over in **his** lane, that's pretty rude and also unsafe, but no more than the motorcyclist is being. But at least that guy is using area that he should expect to be his. I absolutely love riding and owning motorcycles (even though it's been a few years) and this kind of driving doesn't help the cause at all for us being free to ride without a bunch of bad impressions forcing the law to invoke even more special requirements. Just speaking out per the thread. Intent is serious, not angry...... ... Vegamite Sandwich Get Over It Any formation name has potential - maybe one that isn't in the dive pool anymore but used to be. (really, this can be cute and wierd or very serious for you guys - depending on how serious you are taking this team thing.) Best to do this as an action in your first team meeting and brainstorm a bunch of catagories and then specific names. Individuals should have veto authority on any name that they plain hate - no matter if the other three like it they should respect that. From the list that's left nominate a handful and vote it out. Usually during the brainstorming, one will come up that everyone just likes a ton. That first meeting is important - line up expectations and commitments, pick a team name, decide on how to pick slots, estimate the $$$$ commits and whether everyone can handle it, personal and performance goals, etc... Dive two engineering: On Q it would be cleaner to have the point and OC being the head then P should have the point at the end of it. Makes the whole dive cleaner. (Q - phalanx, P is sidebody, O is satellite) You can find a good continuity plan in a few places (standard slots for each of the positions). This is always good to follow as then each person is in the same slot every time you draw that formation. Also, those slots **usually** give you the cleanest moves (example - normal for many is OC/IC have the cat in the crank, but we frequently put the point/tail in the middle if it makes for short moves - about half and half). If you want something that shows this, PM me with an e-mail address and I'll send something to you (all the dive pool formations color coded by slot). You can also make playing cards out of the dive pool and just 'draw' your dive right at the DZ. You get to discuss engineering with the teammates and learn plenty from that.... ... Grandpa, , I'm 37. If my daughter has a kid, that would be a medical miracle. And she'd be in very big trouble for an 8 year old. Unipod - Unipod used to be block 4 in the dive pool. also block 12 (Unipod-zipper). Not today though. Block 4 is now monopod-monopod and does what the old unipod/unipod block did except the solo also spins 360. Is that obsessed enough for you? Now let's try something from the 88 dive pool to be fair to Mary then. (Courtesy of Mario S) ... Same guys are solo in the car pool lanes, too (3/4 of the cars in my area). Car pool lanes are stupid anyway, but if that's the law, then everyone should obey it until the law is changed. And, really, why doesn't the cashier at the store send the joker with 50 items away instead of meekly ringing up the items - or even better, have the register programmed to stop at 10 items? Make the joker pay for each group of 10. Then people will speak up to him and the store manager..... Post office example - Mumbling about it in line is cowardly, the guy should have addressed it directly with the woman and the people she was talking to. So turning around and bringing up the point is the right thing to do - BUT something like "Do you want to weigh in here on this?" is ok. Turning about and 'chewing him out' and preparing to wrestle for it is just stupid and arrogant. Respectful confrontation is useful and works. Problem is people wait to do these things when they've "HAD ENOUGH" instead of dealing with it at the time. What is with this 'time bomb' attitude? so "yes" speak up but "no" not the way Canuck wrote it up ... Code was a good read but a mediocre experience. It kind of reminds me of the old Richard Crenna detective movies. A bunch of stuff happens, then the expert figures out something no one would know about anyway to keep it moving - so you aren't really able to solve it as you go unless you've studied the topic (except that last clue about the 'globe or sphere or whatever it was', that was pretty blatant. As it is, you aren't really part of the story, just a spectator. I liked it a lot anyway. And the subject matter is fascinating. I hear they are making it a movie ... Starting AFF - condensing the 10 jumps good or not?
rehmwa replied to velvet's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you want to get into it right away this spring, go to the tunnel during the winter and put in a ton of time (buy an hour to start and get coaching - you'll want more, so this is a good start). Then you'll already know how to fly fairly well (enough to graduate anyway) and only have to deal with the new environment, canopy control, and altitude awareness. If you have that on your 'resume', sometimes DZs will even let you skip a level(s) or do extra dives above the 'norm' in a day. In any case, going through the program in a couple weekends is pretty fast in the scheme of things, so no matter what, don't overdo what your body and mind can't handle. Edit - oops, as a newbie a tunnel is a skydiving simulator - as in a vertical wind tunnel. Do a search on indoor skydiving (specifically 'skyventure' and 'flyaway indoor skydiving'). ... FUNNY - Lots of skydivers don't take self ego pumping very well. This guy was just trying to impress the crowd rather than just some kind of impotent posturing. (I hope) There is nothing wrong with static line. I started static line and finished AFF. I think most DZs that only offer static line also don't have dedicated packers. That's likely why SL students know how to pack and untangle chutes earlier. Of course SL is from lower altitudes so these guys are also comfortable with hop and pops. And spotting is related to both DZ size and training method. Although I don't think it 'should' matter that AFF doesn't teach spotting as well or as early, it happens anyway. I still think it's hilarious to take a newbie off AFF (turbine DZ) for a RW jump and ask where they are comfortable breaking off and get 4500 ft quoted to me. And this for a jump where they can pull in place if they'd like. Cripes where I started a high exit altitude was 8000 ft. ... Nope, but Billvon did note in one of the updates that they were advised to exit in Mantis as it was better in a crowd. I wonder if any of the "old fossil contingient" there had to ask what Mantis was and get a quick coaching on it? edit: BV also noted how much better his exit was as a result. Update #5 - "The next jump was another 222-way. I tried a new exit on this jump. After several shoulder injuries, BJ was now recommending exits in a mantis-type position. Your shoulders are stronger in this position, and more able to take hits on exit. It worked well. That position is a faster-fallrate position, and instead of sailing on exit I dropped relative to the base and this put me in a better position to make an approach without cutting off the white sector of the base.
