  1. Close, but you read the instructions wrong - 1 in 500 is 30.35%. (1 or more is 39.36%) For a community of 26,000: there is most likely 25 or 26 people (odd for each 7.8% individually) With a 50% chance of there being more than 25 (50% chance there being less than 26) there is more than a one percent chance for there being between 16 and 36 assholes (individual stats for each number) there is 90% chance of there being some number of assholes between 18 and 32 or a 90% chance of there being at least 20 or more assholes but only one asshole out of 26,000 when normal odds are 1 in a 1000? you are right, it's practically zero but I'm pretty sure there's only one really bored asshole with minitab on his computer....... ... 5. I never said that and it has nothing to do with it. For the last 8 years, IT has the option of hiring US C++ programmers or Indian ones for $15 less an hour. Identical skills, 1/6th the salary. The US people have the competitive skills, that is not the issue. I don't know how many times I need to repeat that. But BV's point is, the US people have to develop better, not identical, skills or why should any company pay 6 times as much for the same thing? We do it everyday in our daily life (hire the cheaper kid to mow the lawn, go to that great restaurant that's just a better bargain, use coupons). Why would you think a corporation should hold different financial values than we do as individuals? And I also don't want to pay more for those services and products from those companies. Your position would drive us to an isolationist economic policy and price controls on everything. Now that is a frightening prospect. We can only stay on top if we are smarter and work harder than the other countries. Since they also have humans in the workforce, it's not an easy battle. Any other path will more quickly lead us into obsolescence. ... 8. I don't see how GWB can talk what with supporting all the spending increases. Congress just can't seem to cut spending - regardless of party affiliation. Cowards. And wasn't speaking about office holders so much as just voters. And it doesn't seem that office holders seem to be a representative sample of the general voting public anymore so much as representative of the swing votes they are trying to buy. {{{maybe I don't think they are as good intentioned as I originally thought}}} Edit: In any case, I'd rather presidential candidates would just establish their positions up front and stick to them regardless of the impact to the next election or whatever. ... 9. Well, we were trying to keep it on the subject of Kelly's relative level of nakedness amongst bits of Jello as well as likely locations for skydiving in warmer climates. But both died out. Just as well, I don't think I could've handled it much longer anyway. Edit: Booze - the trick is to find that one liquor that doesn't give you hangovers. mine turns out to be tequila ... 10. Quotethe dnc, from what I understand, are "in talks" w/ Nader to dissuade [/eply] I doubt Nader will be a tool for either party so it's goofy to the dems to try and dissuade and goofy for the Rep to try and convince Nader to do anything. 'bribe' Nader - Benny that's just goofy, any evidence to even consider that bit of chum is worth taking seriously enough for someone to bite? Or do you just assume that all people are inherently evil and crooked until you decide otherwise? I think most politicians, like most people, have good intentions, just different theories about how to get the job done. I'm hoping I'm not a minority in this, but it looks like it. ... 11. All around flyers can fly in any position (that's not freeflying, that's not belly flying, that's simply skydiving - and with other people it's all relative work). And I'll teach CrW (the REAL darkside) to anyone up to it as well. So go ahead and commit to it - it'll all be good, much like tequila. later, enjoy that Lake Michigan snow effect. ... 12. Oh, Benny's just noting that Nader ate up the Gore margin and that the Supreme Court just upheld the true results of the Florida ballot count even after Gore's team had 3 or 4 recounts where he lost all of them (even without absentee ballots....) Let's see what that does....It's kind of a drive by poking for a few people here. ((And I have no idea if the Nader affect actually swung any states any more than the Buchanan effect. But quite a few state were tight so it's likely)) Doesn't matter, ancient history. How big a swing vote do you think is out there (I'm thinking between 4 and 8%)? ... 19. I remember agreeing about food at one point. I don't remember disagreeing about anything other than Space Balls and that's not very substantial. We will have to meet, eat something we both like, not see a movie, and do both RW and Freeflying someday. (and I wasn't recommending eliminating the magazine, only just issuing it to those that want a hard copy and not make those that don't want one have to pay for it. So if we are disagreeing, then you are advocating that people have to pay for something they don't want. I doubt that's your position..... (maybe instead of saying 'pay extra' to those that want one, I should have said 'discounted yearly dues (substantial)' for those that don't.......... fair enough?) ... 20. No issue here, just pay an adder to get your hardcopy and those that don't, don't have to pay the extra - It's a very large component of the membership dues. I was pretty excited about the magazine my first couple years, now I just don't read it at all. After a while it gets pretty lame. We also get two since we can't decline it and get a discount. Why pay for something you don't use? Also, wouldn't the rabid enviromentalists appreciate not making any more than what's specifically asked for. ... 21. We're polarized enough that any appeal by one party to the middle will be offset by losing their extremists as a result. IMO The real decider might just come by having someone pick away at the nut jobs at the extremes this time. So a Nader or a Buchanan type would likely have a big effect. I'm thinking the swing vote is in the single digit percentages this time. ... Patriotism

You said it - even more though... Why do we need any government (state or otherwise) sanctioned contract? Let it be religious or ceremonial or whatever. Property and inheiritance (inhieratance, inheretense, inheri whatever) can be written up in contracts, there doesn't need to be a separate deduction level or tax level for being married vs single, etc etc. I always thought that "marriage" was a religious institution so the other combinations can have their own titles and not be any concern of the government. If we group out 'legally partnered' whatevers from the single, it's just another opportunity to take those individuals and treat them differently (like the marriage penalty in taxes that was fixed this year - why did it ever even exist in the first place??) ...
