  3. I'm an engineering manager and one of our best recruiters and identifiers of real talent in my area of the company - I also do a ton of campus recruiting. I'm batting about 1000 right now in my recruits moving up in the company - just so you can know I'm not talking out my ass on this one - normally I'm jabbing and cynical or playful on these forums. But this is an important subject. Also, which engineering field are you degreed in....? I don't rely on HR at all. So keyword alignment is fine, but make sure you don't ruin your message accommodating that. 1 - Start to network with friends and family. 2 - Figure out what industry you want in then; 3 - Within that industry which jobs are you interested in and focus on those (the worst interview is when I ask the candidate what they want to do and they answer "oh, just about anything" - go away, I want someone who can communicate and has thought about their life.... 4 - You resume is most effective if you can QUANTIFY your accomplishments. (i.e., work on the widgit improvement project resulting in 80% improvement in efficiency, completing the project 4 weeks ahead of schecule, saving the company an estimated $20,000 per quarter. Anyone can do the work if they are smart and have a good attitude. But those that understand the impact of their work and how it fits in the big picture are valuable and can go places and can adapt to the needs as they evolve. I also place a good deal more emphasis on the cover letter and personal communications. Lastly, a resume is a tool for introspection. You need to spend a great deal of thought on it even if no one else ever sees it. The reason is you need to be clear who you are, what you've done, and what you want to do. ANY exercise where you look at yourself and gain understanding will make you a better interview and a better performer in both the short term and long term. ... Yup - she sent me a note on a 19 they scored in competition. pretty cool. I'll have to remember that phrase "doing some go shit" "Whoosh" is a good story. 3 years ago Clare was jumping with me or our first 4-way team and we were getting training at a regional meet from Shannon Pilcher. (Shannon is the best) We were on creepers working the dive and Shannon's giving us good info as always. He stops and asks, "so what's different here than in the air?". We think he was looking for an answer like "nothing, we should be visualizing this as actually being in the dive". Or something like that. Instead I answered "The big Whooshing noise?" We cracked up and apparently Clare brought that story with her back to Oz. I'm pretty thrilled that she's found a great team to work with. I'm hoping they can be national contenders. ... 7. Thanks - Problem is, this won't fix the issue The point is too much vacation not being used must be held as a debt until paid. So I understand the motivation to clear debt. However; Those that hoard their time are old timers with high accumulation rates. So they don't much care as 7 days doesn't make a dent when they accumulate 25 days/year. But the new guy may not even have 7 to start with and only accumulate 7. He's likely going without a paycheck once this year...... I'd rather move to a use it or lose it scenario. Or reduce the allowed yearly carryover to a 'very' small amount. (And yes I understand the irony that the more liberal types will have with me making this statement) ... 8. This kicks it. We used to have: vacation time designated company holidays two floating paid holidays (just like to extra days vacation) a couple years ago, the floating holidays went and were replace as designated two years ago "they" cut in required vacation (furlough) over the 4th of July week. you had to burn your vacation time here or go unpaid. About 4 days. last year they cut in the same deal over the last week of December, another 3 days Just received an official notice that the December thing is now a permanent deal. So of the days I get for vacation, they are requiring me to burn 7 of them in July and Dec regardless of my wishes. It's funny, at the last manager's meeting, one manager asked when the floating holidays would come back. The VP (he doesn't have vacation, he can just take time however he sees fit) responded "We consider your personal vacation to be your floaters". WELL NOT ANYMORE I GUESS It most difficult on the new guys who don't accumulate much (and their managers like me who have to support this crap when the guys voice their legitimate complaints). I am happy to be working, still stinks about this time. I'll have to likely take unpaid time for boogies and competitions now. ... 13. Mary - You are funny and I'll take you on a sit or headdown anytime. Me, I'll continue to do both. But even in freeflying, I'd rather plan a dive and tick off points than geek each other. So for me, there isn't much difference in the end, both RW and freefly have serious and non-serious jumpers, both RW and freefly have cliques and not. ditto the other disciplines. It 'used' to be that freeflying was for the non-competitive types. I'm pretty sure that's over now so that excuse is lame and outdated except for newbies. What you really want to ask yourself is, "do you want to be competitive and go full out or do you want to go low pressure and easy?". Both attitudes have personal gratification and all the disciplines can offer that. Jump with people that feel the same way and whatever discipline you focus on will be satisfying. Or better yet, pick 3 or 4 and do them all.... Edit: and for me, I'd rather watch Majik turn fast points than top freeflyers. I like the precision and teamwork better from 4-way. But both get me jazzed. (for that matter, I'd rather do headdown than a big way or some wierd 7 or 11 way - Bad Freefly is better than bad RW, but good RW is better than good FF for me) ... 14. That's a nice thing to say, but really I am agreeing with you. Women get more attention. I'm just saying it might be because of legitimate reasons and not just the lechery many attribute it to. Such as women newbies have a better attitude (generally speaking from the perspective of an experienced person) therefore it's more fun and less work for the coach. Not just because of drooling men looking to get lucky or to impress those women. (yes there is that too, but those same people quickly move onto to freeflying and camera work or quit early and try other things to impress the women.) My perspective is if they are in it to impress women, then they really didn't think through their sport of choice from a target availability perspective. So, most of the people here long enough to be good enough to coach should be given the benefit of the doubt as to their motivations. As individuals, the exceptions to this rule will be clearly apparent right away. I mean, these are my little sisters more than romantic prospects.... That's fortuneate since my wife would have something to say if it wasn't . ... 15. There is two sides to that. I hate to generalize, but women newbies (compared to men newbies): 1 - Don't become the instant expert after 30 jumps 2 - Listen 3 - Stay upbeat 4 - Listen 5 - Don't overstep their current skill levels 6 - Oh, and they listen too 7 - Seem ok about doing solos for a while 8 - And I should mention that they listen better Now I don't know which is chicken or which is egg (do women have better attitudes because more people try to train them vs more people try to train them because they have better attitudes?) But it's much more fun to coach someone that is happier and more accepting of input and more accepting of their own mistakes. Some guys do this fine, but in general, a bigger proportion of women skydivers seem to fit this than the proportion of men that do.... That said, if a guy listens and tries hard and doesn't get too down on themselves, that's a real pleasure to work with them too. Just give me someone willing to learn and that doesn't have the sport all tied up into their ego and I'm thrilled to work with them - regardless of gender. I'll stop as soon as their attitudes goes south or if they just plain don't advance at a reasonable pace and especially if they just find excuses for everything. ... Jason - Have you heard of the 4-way team "Whoosh"? Clare is a good friend and former teammate..... I'm not sure if they are out of Toogoolawah or another DZ. (Yeah, I know, it's a lot like you asking me if I know "Gary" from Florida, but I'll take a shot since I understand Whoosh is doing good on the Oz skydiving circuit....) I find wide knees makes it very hard to brake at the end of a move - harder to dig the knee if you know what I mean. It's a hard habit to break for sure, I had a pretty wide stance and enjoyed the leverage, but still 'swirled' out a bit every time I tried to brake. It took tunnel coaching for someone to identify it for me. That said, my point man has ridiculously wide knees while flying and he's awesome regardless, almost too dynamic. ... 17. personally speaking, fitness and attitude are way important. I know that's pretty general. This is one topic that can get real brutal. There are some historical studies showing that certain features have always been considered attractive (cheekbone shape, position of nose and eyes, etc). Also, skinny or fat is less important, the study showed, than the ratio of the waist to hips and ratio of waist to bust. I don't have a link, but it was interesting. ... 18. This is a tough stereotype, but I'm sure it goes both ways. We have some very large people at work, those that are confident and outgoing are smiled at and treated nicely. Those that are bitter and complain and sulky get ignored. How can you say that someone's self image is not just as big a player as the other people's bias??? (which is the chicken and which is the egg?) Now romantic intention based on appearance is another story and I don't doubt there's a bias there when strangers are involved. aside - Those are serious weight loss pictures people and even better, it looks like it was done with health and exercise in mind. Unlike Bob, I've noticed this more on women than guys - guys may do this later as they move to this to slow down unconsciously. But for new people, very common in women. Wide knees can force a little hip/pelvis cupping. It's less of a dearch and just more of a cupping. You won't feel or notice it if you don't know what to look for. Best way to find out is to try. Really exagerate a few jumps and try to fly with your thighs and knees almost touching/rubbing/sliding/etc. You can still manuver fine and turns, etc are doable. (I do this also for skiing to practice keeping my knees together....) For RW, I try to consciously target leg turns to try to make sure my inner grippers rub past each other. This has brought my legs together much better. I just wish I had more tunnel time to keep working this exageration. It will help with your fall rate range. It will help you on center point turns. Are you flying mantis? That also can provide more range on both fast and slow ends. ...
