  1. I just received notice of my first fully approved US Patent this weekend. I have 5 more in the approval stages. It takes a long time. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  2. I answered wrong the first time. Thought it was how far the bird flies (got it wrong too, it's only a half hour or 75 miles). The answer isn't infinity number of trips, since the bird stops flying once the trains are closer together than the length of the bird (or that type of thought). The rest is left as an exercise for the student. Assume the bird is 100 miles long, then one trip is the answer (it's a big bird). ... 6. 1 - the race - already explained by smaller time increments 2 - the arrow doesn't move, the entire universe moves past the still arrow - I realize this is flip. so was the question 3 - the bird flew at 150 MPH for an hour. the rest is left as an exercise for the student This is on another post, but it died out quickly so only one person worked it. I have three bags of marbles: 1 - has 6 black marbles 1 - has 6 white marbles 1 - has 3 black and 3 white marbles all are labeled incorrectly with the lables (no particular order here) "Black" "White" "Mixed" 1 - What is the mininum number of marbles you pick to be able to move the labels to the correct bag? 2 - From which bag or combination of bags did you pick how many marbles from? in what order? (these are not clear bags, these are not talking bags, these are not zombie bags or marbles, the marbles don't change colors, the bags may or may not be racing on a train towards a collision at infinitely small intervals, etc. etc.) another: Four guys are lined up in a row facing north. On their backs are colored spots in this order Blue, Pink, Blue, Pink (back to front). They can only look forward and see the people in front of them. Unforetuneately the person in the front of the line is wearing a sweatshirt so the dot color is hidden. No ones knows the dot he himself is wearing. I announce to them that there are two Blue dots, and two pink dots. And I'll give the person to correctly guess their color $5000 dollars. But if they guess incorrectly, I'll shoot them in the head. Who wins the money? (ok, they can't discuss it amongst themselves, only one person gets to guess out loud then it's over, no one wants to die) ... 7. My god no. If we could sue the government (all of us taxpayers) one of two things happens: 1 - we all pay a lot more in huge settlements (higher taxes) 2 - or government code will be so restrictive (for the safety of all - "if we can save one life" etc) that all industry will be tied up so bad nothing ever gets built. 8. Your profile doesn't mention your experience. So if you are getting the basics figured out, I'd recommend the tunnel first as BBabe did. Then you have more to work with when you go a jumping-type camp. Actually, if you are not yet flying mantis, go to the tunnel camp even if you are experienced. good luck, I'm jealous ... 9. I always carry both. But I tend to rely on the audible more and more lately. Frankly, the number one thing I do is glance past my teammates to the horizon occasionally and see where the horizon line is compared to someone on level with me. 10. Hey - you have a pension? That's fortuneate, and a huge drain on many companies. For manufacturing companies, it could be the kiss of death if profit margins reduce and the retired force increases, etc... Many of us have to save up on our own for retirement. I'd love to have back the ~7% I've contributed to Social Security since I started working. -- to invest privately (even starting now, although if I'd have started investing since the mid 80's I'd already be retired very comfortably). Heck, for that 7%, the government can even keep the matching amount my employer had to put in...... I'd still be better right now than I will be in 30 years if I had to rely on SS. and some people still get pensions... nothing personal, just pensions are a thing of the past and every single person I know who has one either doesn't appreciate it and/or is very liberal concerning their retirement funding edit: yeah, this is disjointed except for the whole saving for retirement theme ... 13. I agree, with only 19 jumps, you don't suck and no one is afraid of you. Do a lot of 2-ways and get your license requirements out of the way. 2-way camps and tunnel time is good if you are impatient to get up the learning curve. If you are altitude aware, I doubt that you'd get much flak over mixing up RW and FF. Most DZs recommends you get comfortable moving about in RW first. So do I. And with that smile, I suspect lots of experienced jumpers will want to to 2 way with you. We get a lot out of the big grins when coaching. ... Here's and old one: I have 3 bags of marbles: 1 bag has 6 white marbles 1 bag has 6 black marbles 1 bag has 3 black and 3 white marbles I have 3 labels: "black", "white", "mixed" Each bag is currently labelled incorrectly. What is the minimum number of marbles you need to pull to have enough information to relabel the bags correctly? How do you do it?) Just a reply, if it's set up right, as you increase your samples, whatever setting you choose would approach 50/50 or some multiple of a 3rd. there's no slightly here. You can do it directly by running all combos instead of a simulation. (It's still moot - the host always knows) But in any case, I ran all 18 variations. So you were subject to natural variation even with the huge sample size. (when toggling the "Monte doesn't know" - I didn't run it, but anyway as below). 1 - if monte shows the winning curtain and you don't get to take it as a choice, then you can consider it a loss. Then switching gives you a 1 in 3 chance of winning, not switching gives a 1 in 3, and 1 in 3 automatically lose, because Monte found it instead - so you have a 1 in 3 chance to win no matter what you do. 2 - if you get to take the curtain that Monte showed, then you get a 2/3 chance of winning by either switching to Monte's curtain or, if it's a dud, taking the third curtain. The only loss is if you chose right the first try. 3 - If you toss out Monte's choices and just not count them as either a win or a loss, then the odds are Exactly 50/50, not slightly higher or lower - per number 1 above. (edit - I'll look closer at this one, something doesn't ring right) But that's not really the point of the exercise as Monte always knows..... ...
