  2. It's funny how all the arguments are back and forth about whether the requirements are realistic from a green perspective. what about a poorly thought out and executed program that subsidizes commercial purchases at the expense of the rest of the citizenry? we did it with houses, and look how well that worked out what's next - the taxpayers subsidizing purchases of chewing gum? ... 4. I'd say that was earning the tip. They both added the "extra touch that means so much". Making you feel a part of it, getting you thinking about trying it (although that's also a good way to increase business). Not every DZ or TI does that. I disagree and counter with that's earning a raise if he does it consistently as part of his job performance the DZ should make that type of experience the expectation of employment. They should pay directly more to those Instructors that exemplify that experience. employers should pay correctly for performance, not pass it on to customers since when does doing the best you can be considered 'extra' in a job? It's entertainment - when is the last time someone went up on stage at a concert and gave the band more money because they put on a good show instead of just standing still on stage and just singing their songs anyway - it's optional, do it if you want. the second it becomes any source of pressure to tip, one should just not do it at all ... 6. We must all be out of work then, since there weren't 300m workers to begin with. True, my bad on the extra digits But you knew what I meant, correct? I thought you were making fun of Pelosi's exact same slip from a couple months ago. The crowd castigating you on it chimed in on it being an honest mistake for her. That's the funny part. ... 9. Nobody, in any industry, "Deserves" a tip. tips are voluntary and people can tip or not as they feel - simple enough. I tip when I want and do so frequently. But if I didn't, it wouldn't bother me much. I NEVER tip when it's advertised or put out there like it's expected (tip jars, signs, etc), or asked for directly ("do you want any change from that?"). And a sign that says "we don't expect tips, but appreciate when you do" is the same as asking for it in terms of the effect on people. hell, you can walk up to a stranger and just give them a couple bucks for no reason at all if you like - try it, it's fun I think tips are a terrible thing in any industry, people should be paid for the work they do by their employer. Industries that rely on tipping are just passing on their expenses to their customers indirectly instead of as part of the pricing equation. It's not really fair to the employee if you think on it. If someone does a good job - they should get more raises, and keep their jobs as determined by their employer. If they do a terrible job, the complaints should lead the employer to fire the bad worker. It's not that hard a concept. so, yes, with that in mind, I'd rather the DZ charged an extra $10 (or whatever) on that tandem and just gave the TM $10 more per jump if the TM deserves it. And the TM should just ask for that deal anyway. That takes the expectation away from the customer so they can enjoy the experience. ... 10. sorry, my bad - BOOBIES everybody has different and valid opinions here - that's what makes it good for discussion (thanks, though - a hot airplane can be a real touchy subject for a lot of people) ... 11. I remember jumping with you at CouchFreaks a few years ago and this yelling "GO!!!" was going on from the back. The pilot was calling green a mile short of the airport on a super windy day. (i.e., the spot for the whole airplane needed to start about a 0.4 past, not 1.0 before) We just let the others go first since they were screaming. They all landed about a mile short and needed to be picked up. (And, they were so scared about getting out that the 3 groups that did go early kinda left tight (without proper separation)). It just shows that spotting is still a good skill, and spotting bigger craft is another good skill. Everybody that followed your advice landed on. It's a fond memory as for opening/cracking the door low - it's amazing how complacent people get that they sacrifice safety for a temporary comfort - above 2K, I'll open that door and leave it open all the way to 14K. Below 2K - it's shut and they can cry all they want - if a pilot chute sneaks out at 500 feet under that 6 inch open door, the whole planeload dies - but at least 1 or 2 tandem instructors were slightly less sweaty for that 500 feet. ... 16. Seems the most likely route for Doctors to take if we go down this scary path is for them to reject all insurance and put the requirement on the patients. 17. 18. no, it's just a different word for the same same set of self delusion whether it's a myth of sorts that's based on organized religion or just a personal 'feeling', it's all bunk. I get a kick out of self proclaimed anti-religious types that go on about 'karma' (many times 'carma'). It's just more of the same, only more PC. again, so what? if it works for you, more power to you, but it would be nice if people just recognize the difference between 'faith' and fact and that they are mutually exclusive, so both sides are just wasting their time trying to foist their personal perceptions on each other. ... 21. Hard to tell without both sides of the story. Extreme assumptions: 1 - Gate is a black, elite, acedemian with a big chip on his shoulder and takes everything from a racial stance and wants to jump on anyone for any excuse. vs 2 - Some cop has his own chip on his shoulder and will pick on someone just because of race. vs, more generically 3 - any situation where a cop and a civilian get into an argument - the civilian is out of his comfort zone and will strike out for any reason vs a cop who does this all the time. I don't know. Don't care. It's a whole lot of whining. Until I hear otherwise, I'd lean toward the cop being in control because he's trained in these situations and the civilian isn't. I assume #3 and take the whole racial thing out of it and just consider who will be most stressed in the situation and assume they screwed up. But it doesn't matter, hope fully both stories will come out and people can pick for themselves - and it'll have ZERO bearing on the real results since we don't vote on this stuff in real life. I'm just disappointed in all the people jumping to conclusions without all the evidence. The pres really screwed that one up too. ... A boogie used to be where people could go and jump a bigger plane like an Otter, or a Skyvan so here's an opinion take a bunch of cessna jumpers not used to more that 4 other people in the sky and put them out with 22 people worth of traffic - for the hell of it make a couple of them drunk, high, stupid, or some combination of the 3, and take 6 more that think it's their right to swoop every single jump they make safe for the student? hell, not safe for the up jumpers - but at least the up jumper understands his risks ...
