You examples aren't good examples. Why? Because we're not talking about changing products. We're talking about shifting manufacturing from an area with better technology (which produces less pollution per product) to an area with worse technology (which produces more pollution per product). maybe so, but at least it'll help our econ...o...mee....er ... I agree, but that's not the quiet religious types I'm talking about, that crosses the line. I think abuse like that occurs at kids all the time and in other areas: How about that Grand Canyong guide asking Junior how he thinks that bear feels about global warming - or teachers getting their kids to write letters to Congress asking for universal health care - or teachers getting kids to hand out literature for voting on school funding bills ... the whole post resonates with my thoughts. but a portion.... I'd had the same question, but I'd throw this out: a rational person would, deep down, understand that the reward/punishment system is a myth, so therefore, the concept of this reward is really just the subconscious providing an external stimulus to be a decent person so, therefore, the individual is truly acting from personal responsibility, not just acting in fear of the myth - even when they don't consciously realize it I'll give credit to actions, which, in the end are always personal/individual choices, and leave the whole intent thing as a weak philosophical exercise. in other words, I still with the pragmatic viewpoint for philosophical reasons as well edit: one could argue that the individual is weak since they need subconscious motivation to be moral. One could also argue that the individual is exceptionally clever in that they provided themselves with a subconscious motivation to be moral. I suspect it varies from individual to individual. personally? my moral motivation is recollection of my Dad kicking my ass if I didn't act morally stimulating a conditioned response well into my adulthood - one of the best techniques yet invented by mankind ... New Women's RW Suit designs being released at Summerfest!

At least this is honest advertising I'm a big fan of the following: 1 - Planting a "Show us your _____ (Suit/rig/etc)" posts, and then loading the pics 2 - Responding to config or feature questions of newbies with just the brand name of the (suit/rig/helmet/etc) 3 - Posting updates and tunnel 'events' which are actually just open weekends needing time filled 4 - the "What's the BEST (suit/rig/gear)" posts yay ... So we agree on most all of it in a general basis. I'm not specific to religion though, I'll add in all the other creeps and fanatics too. Since I'm also against other people's subjective beliefs setting public policy for the rest of us ...... depending on the policy. religious or non-religious religion - I'm not religious, but the concept of thou shalt not kill I have no problem with that being a law - I do have issue with other things the extra devout profess example other religion - I do have an issue with many of the green opinions (of the extra devout) resulting in public policy, etc, and that's no different or worse than some kooky religious ideas opinions are crazy things - and this old worn out discussion just leapfrogged from a statement about whether it matters or not if a god exists so back to the original - I don't think it matters if a god exists or not - what matters is results of an individual's personal beliefs on the matter and whether it makes them a better person or not. the position that on a large or organized scale if the practice of those beliefs is good or bad - I posit that it doesn't matter, because in a void, some other organization would emerge with equivalent good and bad results like we've seen in the past - If a group of people would tend to be fanatical in a religion, then in the void of religion, they'll find something else to be fanatical about. The evidence is all around us that this is true. so I just consider the issue on a personal basis since we aren't all drones - no matter how easy it is to treat people like that IMO ... a - Religion is a human construct and, in the best case, is equivalent to a moral code. If it works for someone, great, it if doesn't, one can find another construct to hang morality on. Why belittle the tools another individual uses if that's what it takes for it to work for them? Aren't you tolerant of another's life choices? b - Noting that religion is used to exploit others is interesting, but it's naive to think that in the absense of religion, that some other structure wouldn't emerge to exploit the same in an even worse fashion (clubs, politics being the most equivalent to religion, IMO). Fanaticism leading to exploitation, self righteousness, etc - is found in all areas, not just religion - and the fanatics are the ones I'm worried about most - be they religious nuts, enviro nuts, public health care, cheerleading moms, people that using tanning salons, etc. as far as the judgmental/selfrighteous people - I find that a lot more with people with strong politics than I do with the religious people I know who tend to be quiet and personal about their beliefs. But it's all anecdotal and you run with a much more judgmental crowd, so I'd suspect you see more of the extremes than I would for all type - including the religious. ... that is the absolutely least important question of all when it comes to faith or religion for those (others) of faith, the point of believing in something without proof, is the keystone of how they behave and how they want to be - it's also why I laugh at religious types that want to prove the existence of their deity - it means they don't get it any better than their adversaries on the same topic it's really a matter of application - if one's faith is used to make themselves better, more honest, better parents, decent and moral, then that faith is a great thing for society - I think that's true for most people of faith if it makes one self righteous, judgmental, and allows power structures to bloom that exploits people of faith, than that is a terrible thing for society - I think that's true for a very small portion of people, but it gets a LOT more press than the other and is the basis for people being so terribly cynical and cruel about faith If Quade wants to believe that his camera is sentient and talks to him, I only care if he says the camera tells him to burn and kill. If it tells him to be decent to people and to use the correct f-stop, and to always compose the picture nicely - then I don't much care. In fact, I'm happy for him. The fact the I consider the camera doesn't REALLY talk is pretty moot from my perspective at that point ... If you call the Marriot Residence/Courtyard - they'll normally give a good deal - it's not in walking distance, but only about 10 minute drive bonus - they have a hot tub, much better rooms, pool, free breakfast - but it's at least another $20/day more than the ExtStay. I think it's really worth it - my only real issue with teh ExtStay was no hot tub and the bed sheets - about the softness of brown paper hand towels. The Residence is a suite - separate bedroom from the front area. ... This is cruel. There are better alternatives - the ones who are unable to take care of themselves should have a personal government czar to be appointed, and follow his direction. Czar: "OK, dry yourselves up and extract useful minerals from your body." No need - under Obama-care, there will be a set of criteria in place that will identify when you are to not receive any more medical help so you'll be disected and pieced out for the use of the elite (er.... the people). The remaining organic matter will be dried up and sorted for personal use - but it'll be free and you and your family don't need to make that pesky decision whether you should live or die - or whether you want to be a donor or not. The decision criteria will be mainly based on race and gender, political registration, and the needs of personal friends in government for spare livers, hearts and tissue grafts. It's about time. ... Jump numbers say B, but skill says otherwise?
rehmwa replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
the B is explicitly defined - if you meet the reqs and pass the test, then you can get it I don't expect a certain level of skill from someone just saying they have a license. They need to show it in the air. Telling me you can cook a chocolate cake just prior to a jump will set about the same skill expectations as telling me you are a D license holder. don't sweat it ... Yes, ....sorta My current log book has entrie spaces for about 300 jumps, I have half of it filled and it has over 2000 or so. I use it minimally in case the Protrack breaks I'll want my totals. Sometimes 50 jumps per page or more where there is officially 2 jumps per page example made up July 2, 2009 3500 - 4w - ice at altitude 3501-3503 - Freefly - 2w 3504 - 3508 - 4w 3509 - worked with Annie on bailout, fwd motion, basic mantis (added detail) 3510 - CrW, 4st ---60:21:33 at the end of the day, I'll put the total freefall time down and box it in. And if there's a dive I really want, I can add whatever info I want I can get a whole month of dives in the same space as 1 dive for when I used to tell the story and stamp the formations. That said, I like to go back to my first 3 or 4 logbooks and remember the dives. For teaching, I keep a separate log and keep some detail there. ... not necessarily equal amounts, that's a pretty big hole to dig - even if it's fairest in the end for most perspectives but everyone should have to pay into "their" country (on a 'net' basis) even if it's a small/token amount for those that have little I have no issue with a progressive tax (though I do prefer a flat rate (which is 'progressive' in amount) or sales tax basis which is progressive in that those with more buy more), provided the lowest contribution is greater than zero. if there is no sense of ownership, why would anyone vote responsibly? ... Don't feel bad - two years ago, my 5th grade daughter came home from school, she was in trouble with her teacher because she answered the question - 2/0 = "undefined" (we had discussed limits and how that type of thing approaches infinity, so I advised her that she should just answer something like that with undefined or whatever until the school caught up. The teacher was angry about that and insisted that any number divided by zero was ZERO - her calculater told her so. I e-mailed the teacher and she said they were teaching a tool called 'number lines' and this was what the tool output - when I pointed out this was a great teaching opportunity to show that tools are not perfect, she got angry again and said if any kid didn't answer zero - they'd get that type of question counted as WRONG. Rebecca humored her and answered as expected, but she understood the limit concept and knew the correct answer in truth. It was a good lesson for her to be skeptical. I don't consider her a 'teacher' in any way, shape or form. For a few other similar reasons as well. Including recommending that more kids in her class take ADHD medicine (relative to any other teacher), and etc... (funny thing when you take a simple calculator and take a number and divide by zero - it does show the answer as "0 err" - they seem to miss the 'e' or 'err' note ...
