Do tax cuts for the rich lead to horrible economic times?
rehmwa replied to Lucky...'s topic in Speakers Corner
Yeah, because 25% of my income generates so-many-more jobs than 1% of Bill Gates income ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants -
Should lesbian student be allowed to wear tux in yearbook photo?
rehmwa replied to Andy9o8's topic in Speakers Corner
an expression of her sexual orientation would be to have sex with another girl....wearing clothes is an expression of not being naked - it's shallow and childish to relate the two as equivalent - however, this is a 17 year old child - so that's not surprising - if some straight karate student wanted to wear his uniform in the pictures, why should the attention be any more or less intense? why should the arguments be any different in any way? 1 - She should be allowed to wear what she wants here because it's just plain not a big deal 2 - trying to invoke this by abusing First Amendment interpretations is a joke - this isn't speech, it's just clothes if people can get their heads around #1, then crap like #2 wouldn't have to be invoked so much - it's really very simple and people would be happier if they just kept it simple (This argument for me is pretty rote and it's independent of the buzzword subject - when people make a big deal out of random stuff and want to be activist by tying it into 'free speech' arguments - I always question whether their purpose is the subject itself, or just that they want to make a stink for stink's sake, especially with children that likely crave attention - I find the best 'speech' for a topic is to just comfortably live your life as you choose and not shout it to the world - the first sets an example, the 2nd ends up being counterproductive) Edit: I can't vote for either choice, because I don't know if the school would uphold the dress code for the karate student (or equivalent) example in an equal way. I can assume, but that's not good enough. However, if the lawyer can prove the 'karate student' could wear his jammies in the photo but his client can't wear the tux - then the discussion moves to the next level under terms of unequal treatment for arbitrary reasons (ie. it would then be unfair to single her out for whatever reason) ... when we incorporate all the orientations in a good competitive sport then we'll have some really cool and true "body flying" - we're seeing that emerge in the tunnels even now The difference you perceive isn't freefall discipline or age, it's attitude.....(and it shifts every 10 years or so) Group 1 - we have people that want to excel and compete - they'll be great at any discipline - they'll smile at the other group and jump with them at boogies, but not much any other time Group 2 - we have people that just want to play and goof around - they'll be hacks, mostly. But they'll have a different kind of smile on their faces. They'll also mock the other group because they don't understand them but are secretly jealous of their performance the specific discipline has next to nothing to do with it. Did you see? 35 points for two teams in VFS - that's exciting - those darn Group 1 people keep raising the bar ... I doubt you ever got past a novice expectation on your belly (you probably call it the 'deployment position'). So how could I expect you to understand it? There's a whole other level of body control beyond grasping at someone and trying to geek the camera. I have more FF jumps than you have total - and 3x that many RW and competing. Other than the total energy in FF being much higher (higher wind velocities require smaller movements, but also give opportunity for more power to use) I find them to be identical in overall concept - for that matter, I'm a better FFer because of the RW time - and vice versa. It's all just pushing air to make your body do what it takes. If you really want to be a total body pilot, you have to get over this beginner ego thing and learn from everything in the sport. If you want to call that an insult or a slam, that's up to you - most people take that as just good advice. But expect to get slammed when you come over to someone else's house and put down their best. What did you expect? ... I wasn't being facetious at all. of course you were - it's a common tactic - be proud, it was played flawlessly Don't be facetious. WHO ME??? I wasn't being facetious at all. of course you were - it's a common tactic - be proud, it was played flawlessly ***mock innocence***"I inferred from your statement that the four month old infant made a lifestyle choice detrimental to his health, and was curious about what that choice may have been."***amazement that the other person is incapable of understanding that an infant is helpless, shocked expression, mockery, derision, etc if you were serious, then your ability to 'infer' anything from a statement is to be questioned - unless you are an alien robot of some kind.....then I'd like to offer my services in rounding up the populace in your conquest attempt - in return for power, and my choice of nubile Earth females (about 30 of them will do for now) ... I wouldn't say they have zero implication, they just don't have a direcct implication upon any given individual. thanks, I get your points better - (doesn't mean I agree with them, but I understand where you are coming from a lot better). Did you mispeak above on 3? "they just don't have a direcct implication upon any given individual" certainly taxes and how much they take from any individual have a big impact..... unless you are talking about only those that don't get taxed at all - then any change in the rates doesn't "matter" to them because they aren't impacted........ (but then this attitude discounts the 53% of those that do pay income tax of some amount or the other) ... no, read Lucky's reply to me. What that means to you, is that if you want to have a discussion with the Luckmeister is two fold: 1 - he refuses to speak to acknowledge the other person's basic assumptions and debate on that common ground 2 - therefore, you need to understand his perspective to make ground in understanding either way he's responded fairly courtesously to my request with really simple assumption about his viewpoint - that macro economic issues need to be discussed from a macro-economic viewpoint. Or else both of your are just preaching to the choir. (much like a religious person quoting scripture to an atheist as a method to argue a point - it just won't register) In Lucky's world - using a micro-economic perspective (personal, or business finance assumptions for exaple) as an analogy doesn't register on his radar. And in that narrow point - I'd agree with him that it would be too much of a stretch. Idealizing one's personal financial morals and trying to overlay them on a large country's financial goals is just as abstract a discussion as his version on the other side. ... this is absolutely spot on (there is nothing in this thread that isn't in many RW threads - and stuff I'm hearing from more serious wingsuiters too for that matter) ... I'll disagree - a little bit it's easier to do trash dives with 4 people on your belly than with 3 people upright/headdown, but the math is the same - and if you don't advance, you won't get invited on many 4/3 ways after a while I see it all the time - a good skydiver will on invest so much energy on someone that's a hack - especially if the hack has an ego about it. if you are not current - you will not advance to the next level of body control in either discipline 100 jumps a year? if you do RW - you'll do 100 hack jumps - and your attitude will define if you have fun with that or not 100 jumps a year? if you do FF - you'll do 100 hack jumps - and your attitude will define if you find that fun or not, either skill progression in any freefall discipline (RW, VRW, wingsuits, etc) is not about the size of groups you are invited on, it's about more and more control, precision and power - that takes a commit. If you have an exceptional level of control, then it's not much different to fly a slot in a 4 way or a 100 way. The bigger groups need more people with that level of control, not just one guy to be a little better. or, if progression doesn't matter, you can still have fun, just don't expect to be invited on more advanced stuff FF is alive and well - but the hacks will be left behind and they shouldn't complain if it's their own fault - they can stick with boogie jumps and still have a different kind of fun ... this is typical from people who can't dock in control in any orientation (belly, head up, or head down) - I suspect your idea of fun is a trash dive where everyone 'attempts' to get in front of a camera guy for the 2 or 3 seconds to stick tongue out at him And you are a typical forum writer; if all else fails and you don't know what you're talking about, attack the other persons credibility. only when the other is a newbie hack one discipline amateur that doesn't really appreciate what we can learn from all the disciplines instead of just one go find a top freeflyer (like eric deren or thomas hughes) and ask them if they think the best VRW and 4-way teams are boring and unchallenged you attitude is just a rehash of the same old newbie freeflyer stuff we've seen on all the forums - if you were good at your chosen discipline, or actually did multiple disciplines, your tiny ego wouldn't feel the need to belittle the others. what do you think of CrW and accuracy and freestyle then? At 600 jumps, have you yet bought your 87 sq ft cross brace? ... Actually, I was saying the VRW must be easier because they move even less (that was tongue in cheek to make the point) - I'd seriously align most with equivalence in ability to be a top contender. And the top RW and top VRW flyers agree with that. The only exceptions are most stunted egos that assume whichever discipline they are in MUST be harder. The pro level of these sports is so far beyond what any 2 or 3 hundred jump wonder can imagine, that it's pretty pointless to discuss it with you. If you can't appreciate all the disciplines for what they are, then you don't really understand the whole sport. ... nonsense private sector this happens as they have limited resources public sector - they demand a bigger budget (due to the illusion of unlimited resources) as for gov reps having desire to be re-elected encouraging efficiency is nonsense also - what they do is add inefficiency by target benefits to special groups that net them more votes at the expense of the tax base of those not entitled - as demonstrated by history our government is about which social programs (left vs right) are prioritized to spend all the money on - instead of using the money efficiently on a minimum level of service -----that does not lend itself to efficiency, just the opposite ... this is the big disconnect with a lot of people - your basics of how government work are not compatible with how individuals operate - but if you really feel this way, you should provide perspective: 1 - government doesn't cost anything - we can always print the money we need to do anything we want - or borrow it - it won't have any effect on the economy or on individuals 2 - any debt we accrue outside the nation doesn't have to be paid back 3 - taxes/fees/etc have zero financial implications and are strictly a means of social engineering 4 - money is meaningless seriously - the impression is that one of these is your starting point for most of your discussions. which one? or something else? If the government takes more money from you, can you really argue that you will jump less? etc less? etc? ... FYI - vegetarianism doesn't automatically imply a calorie reduction. Next time you're at Burger King, check out the BK Veggie burger - it's not beans and rice, as far as calories go. I was going to reply to that, too. Even "militant" vegetarians don't eat only "vegetables"; they just don't eat meat (and vegans don't eat/drink any animal products). It's not uncommon for "new" vegetarians, before they learn how to do it the right way, to gain weight during the first few months, because in order to satisfy their ordinary hunger, they compensate for the absence of meat by filling up on too much starchy foods. Then they get too fat, and the crypto-fascist bourgeoisie denies them health insurance. oh GAWD.... doesn't anyone recall the veggies a few months ago that nearly killed their baby? I suspect the Reps are on target to accept money back when they considered themselve overtaxed in the first place. That's consistent. I wonder how many rich entitled Democrats put their money where their mouths are and gave an extra 40% of their income to government. I suspect none did - that's a good discussion on hypocrisy. How much extra did you volunteer to the US Treasury last year? Or, you are welcome to mail me another $1500 again this year as an economic stimulus. But that can't count toward the extra to the government because it could be construed as private charity which dems don't believe in. (....I hope they get to Round 6 today) ...
