is there a real distinction between excessive force (only for law enforcement) and assault (anyone else) if your goal is to treat all individuals equally under law for attacks? We could reasonably just have 'assault' on the books and it could cover that form of assault conducted when cops exceed a reasonable level to conduct their job. No, i don't see it that way. Assault (putting hands on a person) is always part of the job. Searches, patdowns, and all other forms of safety measures would be considered assault . . . Unless you want to change the laws for everyone else and redifine what assault is. I see, so a doctor gets arrested for assault every time he gives a physical? No wonder medical costs are so high. There's a reasonable expectation of physical interaction amongst people that can vary from job to job. Crossing that line is assault, right? ... This is a distinction without a difference. He was beaten by "instruments of the state." my position is that the distinction is everything and treating citizens differently because of their job is morally wrong cops are citizens and individuals, when they break a law, there should not be any lesser or increase in treatment just because of the job description on their W-2. Just for perspective - I also think that when an athlete loses his temper and attacks another player, he should also be arrested for assault by the cops, not handled by his governing business league structure. Just like if your neighbor loses his temper and attacks you for mowing his lawn. ... I understand you. I disagree. The beating was NOT at the hands of the "state". It was at the hands of those individuals that just happened to be wearing uniforms at the time. nicely put ... I understand the rationalization, but ....IMO..... Cops don't dish out punishment for crimes - judges do. Therefore, this wasn't punishment for the crime - and we don't want to get into keeping a tally in that fashion, it would really undermine the justice system. Example - you are just minding your business and some punk attacks and beats you. Why should you get assaulted by someone and not get anything from society, but this guy gets a break in sentencing for a completely unrelated crime he committed. Just for being the exact same kind of victim except for his circumstances? no. 1 - burglar gets sentenced in accordance with his crimes (burglary, running, etc) 2 - the cops gets sentenced in accordance with their crimes (assault and anything else) 2 separate things - if we want to fix what people consider inbalances in justice, we have to do it correctly going forward, not overcompensate or over adjust. Equal consideration, equal justice. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

no, society has the responsibility to direct the criminal action against the attackers - and society should do it regardless of whether the burglar presses criminal charges or not. Justice is about protecting society, not placating the victim. if these individuals break the law, then they should be tried for assault and sentenced just like anyone else - so they don't get the chance to do it again ... I'm torn on this. I agree it's wholly irrelevent to his guilt or innocence, however I could see reducing a sentence somewhat from whatever the standard is to account for the punishment already received, similar to a credit for time served. Blues, Dave I don't - these are totally different crimes and shouldn't relate at all. The attack victim has a civil action against the bad cops if he feels he's owed anything. The fact that the attack victim and the burglar are the same guy is inconsequential in terms of sentencing the burglary. Justice for the beating is putting the attackers in jail for their separate crime(s). It has nothing to do with the victim other than seeing that the attackers are punished appropriately. ... On their facebook page, Airspeed comments after trying out the new blocks. Short answer is it's early they want to play with them, but B13 they liked spinning the piece backwards better - the trade off of the blinder move was more than offset by the easier to control piece and cogging. Makes a lot of sense. B1 wasn't any issue. I really like how they share with all of us - what other sport does that as well as skydiving? ... now this is true - if a student is moving around before the instructors are ready. Having that grip already on the legstrap (the yoke is good leverage too) - only requires a little pressure (and a comment "wait just a second and relax - almost ready for the fun") to just hold the student in that sitting position until you are both ready. If they got up and you wanted them to stay sitting, you are already too late. Control the student is always better and more subtle than "recover the student" ... From what I understand, anyone can sue, anyone can bring a challenge to court - legally justified or not is determined at the end of the trial. I would think numbers depends more on the motives and fanaticism of those bringing the challenges. And legality on whether the challenges were broad based or picking at the edges, and other things, but hey, I'm just a farmboy, what do I know? I would have thought 'legality' would depend upon compliance with the law, not just the sum total of court cases. But I'll have to take your word on it. ... award winner for the most closed minded, self serving post of the week - and that's saying something in Speaker's Corner it's amazing how the arrogance and hypocrisy is so completely missed, even when it's just right out there for everyone to see With that description, I would say at this point, every single 8-13 year old male on the forum wants to move to Europe now. You are clearly a part of the problem post dive. However, if you can get the JM to post his side here, I suspect we can figure out on our own if he's just a firm hand or actually an asshole. I know JM's like you describe, but most of them are just doing as good a job as they can. Can't really tell anything about him without another viewpoint of the jump, just about you at this point. Coming here to discuss it really isn't classy at all. Be better than that - learn what you can and enjoy the sport. ... This is not a great approach, you are making a comparison of a RIGHT (bear arms) to a consumer product offering (health insurance). I'm not a fan of putting health insurance on equal footing - even to contrast the point. Speech - pass a law that requires everyone to join a speech club Religion - pass a law requiring everyone to contribute weekly $$$$ to some institution Guns - pass a law requiring everyone to buy guns if it's a right, just protect the option, but don't pass laws forcing it health insurance - it's not a right, so even the nutty items above have more footing for discussion ... Anecdotal - but one thing comes to mind for me. I had a very experienced friend with a torn canopy - small tear. Not a tandem, sport rig - one cell affected as visible from below anyway. The canopy was "there, square, stable, steerable" so he decided to land it instead of going for silver. At about 300 feet, he finally noticed that, though the canopy seemed to fly fine, his decent rate was about 2-3 times faster than normal. He only sat out 3 months healing from the landing. that said - every situation is only real to the pilot and they have to do what they think is best.... ... Good, that single arrow must apply to both pieces (or we split into two pieces and wait for the world to rotate once ) I hope to see some of the pros come up with something. Block 1 - for now, I guess I'd execute like sno/off - more aggressive/bigger turn out though. Nice to have swing option available at both top and bottom I suppose. Turn direction is an interesting question. for the non-switcher, maybe starting to the right might be quick.... BLock 13 - I'm not a fan of spinning compressed accs and my IC is quite a bit bigger than me. Guess we need to practice. I think spinning fwd makes a lot of sense - though I always feel I have more control spinning back, the blind catch is avoidable. To finish with the right cheats....nothing there. Seems like the left grip acc fits continuity about as good as any (quick from donut...) I still can't find any IPC updates to see if there's any other changes. Unlikely, Kurt is thorough and would have reported it. Overall impression - meh. I liked sno/off and ham/ham a lot. ...
