Christian bikers shield soldiers funeral from protesters.
rehmwa replied to Lastchance's topic in Speakers Corner
faith is belief without proof - to claim to have ANY kind of evidence is contrary to true faith if you are sincere in your belief all you should require is your personal need to believe as you do - that should suffice - cripes, it's the FOUNDATION of all the creator-based religions and there's nothing wrong with that - so I'm always confused why believers take offense at the "you can't prove it" argument. they should be proud of the strength of your convictions ... Ok - I'm all in agreement with this one. religion (including atheism too) is just a belief with no proof BY DEFINITION (the actual definition of "faith") +100 ... In that case, you don't need a girlfriend, you need a therapist. I don't mean that as a joke either. . gawd, I WISH I could find the quiet - I'd enjoy it immensely, but the voices just won't stop telling me to do things. I'm consistent in my views. And I could write your arguments for you and I understand why you think they are still valid. But for when people make your argument (for unions, for solar power, for de-icing Maine, for etc etc etc) one thing is always very common: They are SO passionate about THEIR pet projects absolutely needing it and so against everything else being done in the exact same way. Maybe Maine can keep their money and de-ice their own roads. And Arizona can keep their money and buy solar panels. Both win, the government does NOT take a cut and dilute both efforts, There's more, but no real point to continue - we'll just keep re-iterating the same stuff from here on. Blues ... It's not an "Or" question - I would be more comfy because I would hire the guy that put himself through college - it would imply a more solid work ethic and motivation. I've passed by full ride scholarships kids with higher GPAs (3.9-4.0) for the kids with better communication skills and that put themselves through college (with a 3.2-3.4). I've never been disappointed. And I work in a VERY high technology company that's a bit OVER-prided with PhDs. Funny, though, MY recruits have all risen quickly and are competed for..... But none of that had anything to do with race, so I don't understand how your question fits. I hire individuals, not cosmetics. ... With how many jumps is it ok to follow out tandems?
rehmwa replied to fizzbuzz99's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
this goes back to the stupid higher minimum deployment altitude thread she opened at higher than TANDEM opening altitude!! no reason for a solo or RW jump to do this, especially no reason when jumping with a tandem I'm thinking that with all the turbine/AFF schools, we should require a dozen 2500-3000 ft hop and pops just so students can get at the end of instruction what they missed by not doing static line. Comfort and confidence near the hard deck. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants -

So there is a couple things here: 1 - your list of complaints of how money is spent sounds like you're on my side in general philosophy. cool. But listing a ton of spending one disagrees with to justify something they do want is not really a serious part of any policy discussion..... 2 - "I'm not recommending you take money from food & education programs" Let's be clear - the money comes from PEOPLE, not PROGRAMS. Let's make sure it's very clear that this is not a faceless bag of cash, it's people's resources. It's human effort. Short question - do you think it's right to take money from that guy in Maine to pay for the Arizona guy's solar panels? (any discussion about money not being used wisely elsewhere is pretty moot - if it sucks, they shouldn't spend the money at all, not just transfer it to something that some consider subjectively - i.e., one area of irresponsible spending isn't offset by just doing it elsewhere - do you see what I mean?) ... Cash for Clunkers no matter what, subsidies all have the same origin - the money has to come from someone(s) I'm not a fan of taking money from my neighbor so I can buy a luxury item at a slight discount. I'm a bigger fan that the item is priced such that we can both buy it without assistance. ... oh, oh oh,,,,, here's another one not a lot of subsidies ever seem to get removed - do today's solar subsidy programs have specific criteria for the cancellation of the program upon achievement of a certain level of technology efficiency? that would be nice I'm sure the year it's canceled, people would be happy to not get those subsidies on their purchase even though they had to pitch in the year before for their neighbor's panels.

I'll rephrase "Solar takes off as a cost effective alternative to fill the gap - after many options were explored" I'm equating "affordable to the average guy" is good for something that needs to be used on a mass basis. I'm saying the market should find the solution, rather than be forced in a specific direction. Why is solar the holy grail - can you honestly say that all options will be researched if we subsidized a specific industry? Are you equating non-practical as good? the only thing gov and additional adminstrivia can do is get in the way no matter how much we 'wish' it helps ... no problem - I have some simple questions so - which taxpayers will you steal from that don't get to afford their own solar panels, and which citizens will you 'subsidize' with that money so they can get the discount solar panels? what's your selection criteria for the those that give up their money for food and education and housing vs those that get nifty discounts on those panels? how is the money transferred, should the subsidized just go over to the others' houses and take their cars? or should it be something less obvious? you might reduce the "price" of those solar panels, but you aren't reducing the COST - someone has to foot that bill too....... ... sure, you're #4 I'm #3, but you seriously mis-represented #3 Market Forces at Work (without gov interference) - Have some environmental regulations but don't get involved other than that. Solar takes off as a cheaper alternative to fill the gap, and if it doesn't demonstrate as feasible, something even better came along to fill the market need. ... I agree with that, but the OP didn't say what he was looking for. Force - Market forces (how did you come up with "goons"?) you keep writing "artificial" = if you don't see the problem with that all by itself (or the fact that those subsidies have to be paid for by people, not just the obscure government), we'll continue to politely disagree on it (or I'll be polite and you can if you like) ... the hell with subsidies - delete them altogether force the solar panel companies to improve the technology so they can fairly compete in the market with product affordable without robbing Peter to assist Paul in purchasing these things this just delays the introduction of affordable solar panels - why make them cheaper when the government can artificially jack up the price? ... With how many jumps is it ok to follow out tandems?
rehmwa replied to fizzbuzz99's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've chased tandems for over 20 years, and every TM is different. So I always do a few things: 1 - agree it's ok with the passenger 2 - Talk to TM, if he's ok with it. Then, if the TM cares, I ask specifics - what direction does he want me to approach from, which side to close on (if ok to dock), does he prefer I take his arm, he takes my arm, or if I take the passenger, or just lurk real close - anything he wants me to do for the dive for the fun of the passenger; break off signal/altitude need. Some TMs are very detailed, some are pretty casual about it. 3 - Talk to the camera guy, if he's ok with it. Then, lighting, approach, how long to stay away at first so the passenger gets solo shots, does he want anything from me in the background for the opening shot (layouts, just get away), etc. if any 1 of the 3 don't want a chaser, then I go away. If all are fine, then I follow the TM's directions first. Then whatever the camera guy thinks is good to make a nice production for the customer is next priority. It only takes a couple seconds of discussion really, and I deliver whatever they require. If you can't fly good enough to do whatever the TM and camera guy need, then I don't care if you have 30,000 jumps. Stay away. ... He gets in his car, locks the doors - they start beating on the windows, he starts the car and drives away. no, wait - he can't start the car, they break the windows, drag him out and kill him bloodily.
