Jumpsuits aren't mandatory by the regs because it's so freaking obvious it doesn't need to be. If you are cleared for solo, jump how you want, it's your option. But not wearing a jumpsuit is kinda stupid as a newbie. Unless it's REALLY hot out......then it's kinda nice, but you need to always consider safety and performance. Ask an instructor what to consider if you go suitless. It's not a dumb question. ((actually not wearing a suit is no biggie - but be aware of what can be different with the new config) (clean lines, handles don't get covered up, helps you fly a bit if it fits right, easier for the coach to fly with you on checkout dives - so if you choose not to and it's allowed, be aware of these things when you suit up - instructors should be free with advice.) have fun and congrats on the AFF. Edit: whoops, your next post shows you are thinking the right things. good for you ... It's the money thing. Tell the 1% they get to keep all their money and it doesn't matter who you are, you're their hero. at least they are consistent - $$$$$$$$$$$$$ (and nice you admit it is (was) "their money") on the left, as long as a politician has a 'D' next to their name, they can do everything their "R" predecessor does (and much worse) and still be called a hero ... Funny stuff indeed. I'm happy to see legislation that defunds Planned Parenthood......Because this is ANOTHER function taxes shouldn't pay for. And I believe the parents should have the right to choose----and be responsible for that decision. This is just one program of a huge list that should be canceled. But I hate that the right is NOT doing it for fiscal reasons, rather for the social agenda. Even the fiscal hawks pander and say idiot things like "our spending should reflect our SOCIAL values" instead of "this isn't a program for the federal gov, it should be managed locally". Every guy that says that, i just assume is a religious nutjob that loses my attention. We need defined, and FEW, specific missions for the feds and cancel everything else and not allow it to grow. The states are supposed to have the majority of the governance. As long as subjective social crap keeps getting funded and fought over from both parties, how can we cut that $1T per year???? ... Lindsey Graham demands more government spending
rehmwa replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
so it doesn't matter then what the cause is.....we need to cut everything.....no matter how well intentioned, or which side thinks it up....and let the private sector address that stuff significantly simplifying what we allow the fed to be involved in is the only way to do it. Cut entire programs wholesale. Get out of charity. Get out of education. Slash the military. etc etc etc ... Yep You dont get it so I understand your answer I agree with Billvon that the fix will need to be two pronged (really three pronged). Reduce spending, add revenue as consequence of the reductions creating improved economy, add revenue by mandating it through higher taxes on every single citizen. But increased revenue does not work in application because of the main problem 'spending'. But, any increase in revenue isn't applied to close the gap, it just increases spending that much and then a little more. Making the problem worse, not better. So the falseness of the half 'solution' of more revenue is just another example of the real problem - SPENDING. We have to fix SPENDING and fix it significantly - and that has to become a major shift in how government works and it has to be demonstrated for a long time before even thinking of increasing taxes - only then will increasing mandated revenue (taxes) be an added relief to closing the gap. as for EVERYONE sharing in the load - if you don't pay taxes, you don't really give a crap if we operate in the hole. that has to be fixed too, else voting habits will never drive the proper legislation for responsible governance. ... right, so the Dems and Reps are trying cut $1T from the annual budget instead of little stupid impotent cuts/gestures AND the Dems are acknowledging that to make up the $1T if they can't cut it, that they'll have to tax EVERYBODY in the country more and not just 5-10% of the population right? they both realize that? ... and they are doing it right? let's see - we take in about what? ~$2T a year? and then we want to spend what? ~$3T a year? ok, and the parties are now fighting over the budget spending reductions. I assume one party wants to cut $1T and the other wants to cut a little more than that to start paying down the old debt....... right? it only makes sense. I mean, it's not like they are quibbling over cutting $30 Billion or $40 Billion or something that just won't touch the short fall...... that would be stupid, indeed ... Generalizing from a rather small subset is fraught with difficulty. However, comparing groups with the same life criteria is a fair comparison as a baseline. Comparing groups with tons of 2ndary inputs and confounding factors has a lot more difficulties. ... 1 - pass/fail - I really don't care about the semantics of it. I just want my students to learn and progress, the levels will take care of themselves. Since I STRONGLY believe in positive reinforcement for sport with a big emphasis on mental training, I won't use the term fail or pass. ---, but I WILL NOT obsess or try to change the student if they use the terms. That's just asking them to do it (think it) in stealth mode. We spend way too much attention on that here IMO. A comment at first, and if they continue to lean on the terms, I leave it be. 2 - Tunnel - The OP seems to be thinking in terms of the cost tradeoff - i.e., minimum $$$ to complete the full AFF cycle. Most students repeat 1 or two jumps - some go through clean. 1 or 2 jumps can be $100 to $250 depending on which jumps are repeated. on average, 15 minutes to 30 minutes of coached tunnel time would be the break even point in terms of $$$ and avoiding one repeat. Even considering that a repeat can always be a hard deck loss of awareness which isn't trained in the tunnel, the tunnel will increase comfort and, indirectly as a result, help the student with altitude awareness as they can focus on more than just body position. I've seen mantis coached non-jumpers with 30 minutes that turn better than some of their instructors. It's nice to have solid freefall technique. Makes it easier to learn alti, canopy, acclimation, etc But I think the comfort, relaxation and muscle memory from tunnel time is worth a hell of a lot more in terms of later training even past AFF. I can't quantify it though - sorry. Tunnel isn't necessary at all. But it WILL help with the early learning immensely. ... Absolutely - I'm a LOT more cynical about politics and religion and consider most people to now be a ton less tolerant and a ton more ignorant of other viewpoints than I'd originally assumed.
