You are on a 190 looking to go to a 135 - that's a big jump worth more than a few years of experience. A 135 for a 170 pound guy isn't out of line for a jumper with a 1000 jumps or more and good experience. That new rig with a 170 that will pack to a 150 sounds like a good rig for the next few years if you consider a 170 for a few hundred jumps and then the same for a 150. How about going to that next size on your second rig? If you do it right, you have plenty of time to worry about it later. For that matter, by the time you are ready for a 135, the technology might change even further and pack volumes will get REALLY small and you might want something else. Better to plan for your jumps in the next 2-3 years, not your jumps for 5 years out or more. (and the comment on the reserve size is a REALLY good consideration - my reserve is bigger than my main) ... here's a quote from Quade "if the person is thought to be incompetent, he'd go up against a board who would make the determination if he shouldn't have one. If at a later time somebody thought the person was competent" So to answer your question - apparently when "somebody" thinks it is enough to take away or return his property hope that alleviates any concerns ... I take exception to that word being applied to hunting and fishing, etc. None of these are really 'sports'. I like "outdoorsman", or just call it hunters, fishermen, campers. sportsmen isn't accurate. of course this has nothing to do with the serious penalties pushed on the crowd in terms of fees, tags, taxes, etc - just a digression ... so no issue then - IF the gun holder is drunk or clearly notes that he plans to get drunk, THEN I'm happy to take away his bullets. if he's sober, I have no right to take either items and this is same regardless of what type of building or business he's in - be it a bar, or a garage, etc ... AFF student struggling with stability

I don't think Ron needs to think back to his own experience. He likely works with 1 or 2 people like this each weekend. teaching this stuff gives you way more tools than just personal anecdotes - when we teach, we see more than just our own historical version, so we have more examples to draw from to fix it. Newbies just assume their personal experience applies to everyone else. (I think he has a lot of jumps, a few ratings and has been teaching for some time now. But I'm just guessing) ... there you go - they know where you are better than any of us. Work with them. Sometimes just telling someone "you need to relax" is an easy bit of advice that turns into a cliche. if it is not working to just get the reminder, find that coach you are most comfortable with and ask if they can expand on the short comment and maybe help you with breathing or other relaxation techniques. "relax" can mean a lot of things to different people, they have to find your version and train/verbalize in your language to be effective with you sometimes, though, a student really just needs to "just relax", and it takes a few more jumps to get comfy in the element - that means a couple of jumps, strike the comfy arch (and give it a chance to work) smile, breath, etc and it'll click once your body figures out that it belongs in the wind we can't really tell which guy you are from here though work it with your instructors, though. a website isn't going to help at all and advice here might undermine whatever plan they have for you ... a lot of times when conducting mantis camps, I see people on the net and it's mostly because of crappy body position - if you give them more air, sometimes they'll just adjust to an even worse body position and still be on the net. other times, they need more air you need to know what you need to fix first (same thing noted for sit/back/etc) - and there are effective and ineffective ways to get off the net with low air - helps to get that coaching too I'd 'ask' them if you think you need more airspeed or if they are seeing that you have a bad body position - and directly note that you are fighting to get off the net and want to fix that. You'll then get one of two things: 1 - more air 2 - or really good advice on your body position (and likely more air anyway) most all of the tunnel attendants I've met have been fantastic and professional - treat them as such and as a great resource for improving your flying, and you'll get a great response normally ... that's usually two separate things: 1 - people that don't like guns don't own them (fine), and also don't think others should (wrong) despite the right to own private property 2 - people that brag about all the fights they've been in......well, we know what that means ... got down to this post and was thinking the same thing the 'posers' might just be lonely or want to be interesting - or at least they think this will make them more interesting - I don't see a lot of harm in this (exception is the up story where a guy was posing about 'saving' himself and the lead instructor at a local DZ - that's bad for business - slanderous to the instructor) ... that's a good description, P - look at the damage that personality already caused over the last nearly 12 years already I prefer her current status - she can make big, and necessary, stinks about spending and taxes be totally out of control - absolutely useful and necessary. While any of her nutbag social/religious crap can be highly diluted amongst her +500 cohorts - all of whom are nutty in their own areas. but, please, PLEASE don't let her get anywhere farther in the next few months - so she can go back to congress and obscurity - kinda where BHO should have stayed I'd like a fiscal conservative without social baggage to go up against our commander in spending - we don't need 4 more years of nutbags/suicidal spending policy - right or left wing - ... I think it's the best comment so far Tandems are the core of any business - we should find a term that create the best market response. If the term 'student' tends to pull them in better, then great - ditto on 'passenger' - ditto on 'meatbag'. Whatever brings in the business is the best term. as for a 'label' affecting instructor attitudes - I don't know any TM's that are that weak minded. I don't consider the label to be worth one bit relative to actual experience - I consider the treatment to be relative to the experience. So arguing that calling them 'student' affects the 'TM's attitude' toward the student is bull - the TM chooses how they interact without such amazingly subtle mental/psychological manipulation like labels.... you can't fix it with words - call a TM an "instructor" while he still makes stupid jokes, swears, smokes right up to loading the plane, smells of BO, makes lewd advances to the young women, jokes about the dangerous parts, etc etc etc, and you won't retain that "student" people spend way too much time arguing semantics and way less time just finding the the best ways to do the job - if we remain professional and respectful, the labels usually take care of themselves ... not intentionally I just commented to part where you thought it "appeared that I was supporting her" the rest of your post was (as I took it) about something not related to that. important as an unrelated point, but not about Jakee's Dowding. not quoting that bit didn't add or detract from your content. I'll check out the context again - Edit: Ok, here's a better reply That's a bad take on it - "because the other guy does it too" is not justification, it's an observation about how bad this is in general with all pols. Your additional note that this is even worse because of the perceived relative consequences is interesting, but it would be terrible if she was direct about it or devious about it. So my point is an add on, not a differentiator gotta admit - I'm pretty distressed that the whole "others do it, so it's ok" attitude/assumption is even acceptable by decent people. Ditto with "well, the other guy is even worse". we should maintain higher standards for ourselves and others ... How about a responsible homeowner who actually paid off his mortgage in full? What does he get? Someone has to shut down questions like this - it's seriously an indication of the hate that the public has for the poor and downtrodden and women and minorities. an elderly woman told me once that she paid off her home - she now eats cat food as that's all she can afford there are serious consequences to hate-filled actions like paying off homes serious consequences if we love america, we'll ban speech that asks these type of questions - if we love women and minority rights, we'll shout down these hate filled questions that are solely designed to take away much needed benefits for people that have home too big for them for the children ... I really like the input of that note. I'm on board with all of it. Really, for RW, booties weren't to slow down - they were their to add a very controlled shape down by the legs for more power that doesn't flap (again, IMHO). more leg power means faster and more responsive moves, and more freeing up of the arms (same goals apply in FF, of course). I'd think an analogous feature for FF would be smaller, stiffer, and have to enclose the entire foot to allow it to not interfere with upright configs. Or, maybe not even part of the suit, but part of special footwear. Seems to me though, just tightening up the suits is a bigger gain- same as RW - we want to fly our bodies, not have a suit trying to fly us. This is hypothesis - at my current skill level at FF, the last thing I need is "more" power. the only thing we know, is that we don't know what'll be the next cool thing that actually helps my wife's latest FF design: RW torso (very form fitting) - straight arm and leg cuts which are fairly close fitting, stirrups and hidden cuffs, magnet zipper pull cover, comfort liner. She really likes the stiff collars but doesn't really have a design for that yet. I love the suit - every time I get a new prototype, it's tighter and I fly better. seems all the suits are moving in the same design direction from what I can tell. good luck this year - I'll see you there. ... I'm still out to lunch on the grippers idea for VRW - I don't yet see the need really considering the pool and where people are taking grips, as well as the control/precision needed at those energies. IMHO I had a concept for something analogous to booties (search footies - maybe it's still here). The question is whether that extra surface area and power and control is really needed vs just continuing down the path of more and more form fitting cuts (IMO more and more form fitting is definitely the right evolution - funny how aerodynamics and physics still apply). it's interesting how FF suits are evolving almost exactly as RW suits did at first - that's why the successful concepts from RW should be assessed, at least, for FF suits as they go tighter and smoother. ...
