So you're advocating that we massively reduce military spending, and see what happens? just as much as you are advocating that we apply 100% of every bit of income from every single citizen for the military....... Since Paul can't just do it with the wave of his hand (though Obama is likely trying to get that authority for the exec branch, he hasn't succeeded yet) I'd hope that we would see serious reduction over a 4 year term in all government spending, but tempered by a legislative inertia to do it in a controlled and petulant fashion. Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, Military You have to hit ALL 3. (and all the "other programs") - why do the righties think military is the sacred grail and the lefties think the other 2 are the sacred grail? I doubt a President Paul would get ANYTHING he wants 100%, but he sure would embarrass the idiots on the right AND the left and ensure that the public knows all the missed opportunities. I'm not comfy with the degree that he'd press his foreign policy positions. But yes I am super comfy with him trying and makng smaller steps. But maybe that's not me being willing to be aggressive as needed you guys keep confusing the office of president (in a self regulating 3 branch type of government) with some kind of emperor with ultimate authority edit: I'm not a Paulite, but I'm running out of options here ... I don't see any advocate of "pulling all the money out of Wall Street". I do see advocates saying tax the gains at the same rate as any other income. It's "less" incentive (less artificial incentive actually). But the free market still exists, and people will still do their research and invest where they think it's profitable. ... And that's where he becomes unelectable. I am all for taking our troops out of Europe, and letting them pay their own way for defense. But, the fact of the matter is, the world needs a clear winner at times, and that's where our military comes into play. We cannot eliminate that. Things would turn ugly within a generation if we did. we don't need a generation - I'd chance it for four years just to get more visibility to the fiscal and domestic alternatives that we'll NEVER see with any of the others ... "I will always be in favor of a lower rate for investment income in order to subsidize Wall Street" this is what I see that phrase we should stop picking winners and losers one thing, changing the rules to tax ALL income the same means a flat tax with no credits, no deductions, EVERYBODY PAYS, no mortgage deduction, no tax deferment, no big corporate 'special' taxes (oil companies), no big corporate subsidies, no 'encouraging' green energy, no deductions for food, clothing, anything, no benefits for any income bracket high or low, etc etc etc etc to do it truly, everybody loses their pet benefits understand THAT, and then lets see how many people REALLY have the stomach to do it all out, and for real that's fair ... I doubt Obama would EVER go for a flat tax. Paul just might. The other GOP candidates likely would talk about it, but just like Obama would retain the tax structure that they can exploit. Obama would go for gay marriage because it's a political agenda. Paul truly believes that government should stay out of social issues, so he would actually be sincere about it. The other GOP candidates would oppose it (agenda thing again) 2 for 2 on Paul - he's great for fiscal and domestic and social issues if you are a "spend less and stay out of my personal business" type, you'd have to look at his foreign policy though, to see if you align there - it's pretty divisive. ... do you expect to pitch this over and over again and get any serious response other than "holy crap, your only comment is to destroy the entire freaking world economy?" the US can't print our way out of debt and expect to survive, or to even get out without seriously hurting the rest of the world's economies as well you are in jeopardy of being made into Dreamdancer's roommate if you keep this up ... at best, finding the optimimum of a moving point that's likely close to it already (we've had a LOT of iterations and with the end goal for the last several decades being the government trying to soak out the maximum it can take........) then - maximizing revenue via following the upslope of the curve is a minimal bang for the buck at best the BIG dial remains dramatically cutting spending and encouraging a philosophy of minimal spending for the future ... Big Bang Theory tangent on I suspect those 5 can define everything - though, perhaps, you might need to add infinity to round it out. defining infinity as 1/0 (or pi/0, or e/0) is not very comprehensive as just using the concept directly - IMHO the first time I realized that trig functions could actually be expressed by combinations of power functions defined with e and i and pi was a real eye opener Nerd Tangent tangent off Which infinity? this is just irresistible bait for about 4 of the other posters here, you know....... ... that's a faulty debate and logic tool - absurdum limit(something latin sounding) - I think you can contrast to the opposite limit - "right, increase tax rates and revenues increase. The obvious answer is to increase tax rates to 100% and then tax revenues rise to _______" it highlights your post as silly because if taxes were 100% and the government did everything then we'd either have a population that did nothing because they don't have to, or the population would be forced labor in slavery to the government - both extremes ignore economic and psychological variables..... it's more like a curve - the debate is really which side of the maximum we are on - and whether than maximum can be moved also...... ... Going from abject poverty to being essentially a slave is only a minor improvement in anyone's life. The ones I know ended up being the very well off middle class in their countries, perhaps your companies are a bit more exploitive? as for your strawman - I'm not justifying anything, just playing your game to show that "fair" is still a crappy subjective term, no matter how much like using it to push a political agenda ... seems that a rather quiet and small minority (say 1-5%) has bought and paid for about half the rulemakers it seems that a rather loud and much larger (say 30-40%), but cheaper, minority has paid for the other half and I can't really discern which rulemakers are pandering to which one or both seems both minorities cost me about the same and I'm not a fan of what either side wants to do with the money of the rest of us (the leftover majority) ... Okies, let's go down that road. For about a hundred years US industries and labor fought back and forth about what was "fair." They codified the rules in labor agreements and national labor laws regarding things like safety, work hours and minimum wages. Then sometime is the '80s, the companies decided they wanted a bigger piece of the pie and could have it by hiring people overseas to do the work without regard to those agreements, including the ones about safety, work hours and minimum wages. Was that a "fair" thing to do to humanity? They exported jobs, but not working conditions. They created the very climate in which remaining companies found it impossible to compete unless they did the same. They destroyed vast sectors of the national economy for their own best interests and now whine they need subsidies in order to continue to be in business in the US while sheltering money overseas. Is that "fair?" I suspect that the people in those other countries think it was very fair. I consider those people to belong to the definition of "humanity" Again, just to highlight to uselessness of the word in political discussions (except for drinking games). ...
