Should background checks include identifying the mentally ill
rehmwa replied to OHCHUTE's topic in Speakers Corner
now, now, settle down there.... nobody cares what the people affected think about it this is about placating a loud and vocal base of people that don't think things through so congress critters can pander for votes at re-election time oh, and sound bites......lotsa sound bites if a few people get their rights stripped even though they've never broken any laws.....is that really so bad as long as a couple weirdos get re-elected? ... I was just at the Pearl Harbor Memorial last week. Many Japanese tourists were there. I couldn't help but wonder what their take on all that was. "Hmm, check it out. THAT boat is STILL sunk. Pretty impressive." ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

I've found this to be true in several asian countries, I'm told this is true in many euro countries, I find it true in a lot of regions in the US as well. Seems to me to be common sense. I always try to greet people and ask if they are well before initiating the direct purpose of my visit. The response has ALWAYS been very positive. That's during international trips, or going to the store a few blocks from house. It's less about rudeness, it's more about treating the other person as an individual deserving respect who happens to have a job..... instead of just a vendor of a service or product with no other purpose (no matter how polite the delivery of the request). It's really hard for me to remember to do this, I'm very mission focused, so a little bit of pleasantry seems inefficient to me. But the payoff has been good in terms of quality of service and just getting a lot more smiles. I don't care where you are from, most people seem to appreciate it. The outliers that operate like the Seinfeld "soup nazi" are the exceptions, not the rule. ... I'd love to see a tail strong enough to accidentally stop an IC with a good strong hip check exit...... The only problem with taking the OC is when the IC is late, that entire H just strings out and a good tail can help mitigate that if they are on the IC but if they are on the OC, they can only hurt it. But, that's a general problem with timing issues and I'd rather plan to fix the problem than plan to try to minimize it. Get the OC and IC correctly in tune with each other and I don't care who the tail takes because he leaves with both. But the preference to IC is noted and why. ... yeah, dems are perfectly non-hypocritical. so I have to assume this only applies to government owned websites? because a private website owner can can keep or delete whatever the hell they want to on their site, for whatever random reason they want to, and it's none of the government's business (normal slander, liable type laws applicable of course) right? . . . right? ... I appreciate the remainder of your post as it has to do with penalties and enforcing existing law. But this part I want to address. MN Legislature didn't so much devise a strategy, they did assemble a lot of talking points with the intent of pitching it in a serious fashion for a vote. I'm sure once they actually paid attention to what their constituents really wanted they decided it would be political suicide to move forward. So they ditched it until someone else (feds) pulls the trigger. ... just because I agree with your amended statement is no reason for me to not to continue to ignore it and tediously restate my soapbox in my normal and unproductive style but that's insane according to the Is-As (trademark reserved) standard. actually, it's the perfect test since his real life actions just showed he is a direct threat to the rest of us (of course, I'd like incarceration (or incineration) at this point rather than just take away his pistol) - the issue is by then it's too late to avoid the first instance, as we couldn't predict his future actions we can only respond directly against a person based on his present and past actions......... we can only address the possibility of it prior to then by being allowed to be prepared to respond if it happens ... So you really believe that you only want DNC fundraisers to own guns and be able to search anyone's home at any time of their choosing? Really? (You were a bit random and strawman with the reply to a post about semantics arguments being a waste of time. Hope this helps.) to your question - Let's say you were slightly depressed. You are dealing fine with it, or taking appropriate meds, whatever. You've never committed a crime. Heck, you won't even pet a cat in the wrong direction. Are you ok with having any of your basic rights removed? You ok with the Sheriff inspecting your house whenever he feels like it, or whenever Kallend sends an anonymous note to the city councilman noted that "Quade is crazy - he's on meds"? you ok with that? 1 - What KIND of crazy? 2 - How is it determined? 3 - If you never ACTED violently, despite your diagnosis, how do you justify removal of the right????? ... My position? MN has a minimal background check for hand guns. It's a questionaire, and then a quick check against felony status. Approval turns around very quick as a result. It's needed to purchase handguns from licensed dealers. Even then, the dealer has to make a call to see if the permit is expired or invalid. 1 - I'd like that extended to all firearms purchases. 2 - I'd like to see it appended to also require proof of basic firearms safety. (proof of class, answer some simple questions, or demonstration - any will do, there's no reason for a citizen trained by his dad to have to take and pay for a class when he can answer some simple questions to prove it). 3 - I think the basic safety class should be offered in high school. of course lots of places would offer it as a service. 4 - though useless to require it, that permit should be required for private sales too 5 - delete the dealer confirmation of status - if the permit expires, no sale. the sheriff can update each period on renewals. If the individual commits a felony, then the cops take away his permit. A - It'll teach people about guns correctly. B - Everyone is checked out prior to ability to purchase. C - Once you have the permit - you can buy zero guns, you can buy 100 guns, but those sales are not registered or tracked, it's no business of anyone else what I legally purchase once I'm checked out in the general fashion needed to get the permit to buy. D - Even so, it'll still do NOTHING to stop crazies from committing their first felonies. it'll not stop any illegal purchases. etc etc etc this is about education, and ensuring legal citizens have a way to get checked out without having their privacy violated, or zealot 'officials' denying them basic rights for false reasons. no where in here does it talk about psychological eval. If a crazy proves themselves a felon by their ACTIONS under law, then it's automatic...... ... I disagree, it just means that the Dems are gutless in this state and know if they do anything at state level, they'll be kicked out. So what they are doing is waiting for the Feds to stomp on our rights and then they'll just comply with it and use that as an excuse. This article plays right into that strategy even.... If anything, it's even worse, we have the state government giving up it's rights to self govern and pushing it to the higher level - which should really be out of this type of issue completely in deference to more local government. States should independently establish a position - one way or the other - based on the will of the people. And then use that to base how they respond to the fed's intrusion - one way or the other. this is just gutless - and expected ... are you really letting him pull you into that idiotic semantics tangent? the subjectivity is so full of crap, it's just a blind dead end from the get go Brought to you by those that make dumb statements like "I just don't UNDERSTAND why someone would do something like that" Those that confuse the application of insanity and evil and legality are the same people that are incapable admitting that acceptance, advocacy, tolerance and understanding are not equivalent concepts. ... It's a bit odd. Felons - described as such by their actions only. Makes a lot of sense in an 'innocent until proven guilty' society Mentally Ill - described as such by a subjective assessment or by actions. If only by assessment, then it's an issue of subjectivity. If by their actions, then it seems that we should assess of those actions define felony behavior is demonstrated. Then simply deny the felon the right. If someone demonstrates they are a felon by committing a felony act. Then it doesn't really matter why (insane or just evil or just stupid). They should be categorized a felon. I don't think there's a real way to head the problem off 'before it happens'. Our system of law is based on what people have already done. Actions matter. Trying to define it by words, thoughts, general condition, etc really does lead down to denying serious rights from those that aren't a threat. ... I agree with him on that point - I don't need the government to tell me to be considerate on these areas. I do it anyway and I suspect you do too. But codifying it isn't really about people like us. seems to be an impotent point he's making if you consider that rights are, by definition, ours by nature (that 'respect' being a reflection of natural rights as our default group psychology). Codifying them is less about 'making' people act to their better nature, but rather just acknowledging that it exists already. Or, at worst, codifying them is about protecting those that already show that respect from the very tiny group of those that are deviant from our natural state achieving a level of political power and abusing it he's really going down a pointless path and is just dressing it up by being outrageous in his delivery in other words - I suspect the majority of people respect the speech and property and rights of others already out of respect - whether or not law was in place. most (morally based) laws are in place to address the minority that don't have respect for others....no kidding ... It's a fantastic list and it's based on individuals freely choosing not to be dicks about how they treat the world and other people around them. Any decently raised farm kid would give you the same list even if he had never even heard of the AGW agenda. Also - It doesn't require government laws to tell people what kind of light bulb to use. It doesn't require taxes and 'credits' to be assessed. It doesn't let asshole politicians and actors with private jets to dictate to others how they should live. It's a great list. It's about being responsible and kind. It has NOTHING to do with the AGW religious agenda which is solely about money and power over the blindly faithful. That's the good part. ...
