  1. This. The driver was at fault, yet Adam's the one who's in jeopardy of criminal prosecution. If that sounds like an unfair tradeoff, well, we're not in high school any more. I don't. The guy was careless and caused an accident (note that the guy was sorry and felt bad, didn't see him, etc etc) that's true. Punching him in the nose (no other info here about the dialogue or actions prior or I might change my mind) was on purpose. Adam, you should be prosecuted and grow up - you even brag about it here. Again, give me more info and I might change my mind. Did the guy try to hit you first? If the driver was a tiny woman or someone's kid would you be so proud of yourself? ... 2. It makes a lot of these self righteous road tantrum stories a bit amusing too. I also don't get upset at drivers that are going the speed limit, even if I want to go faster. I find it funny when people brag about about how mad they get, like losing control is something noble instead of childish. It's driving, it's a minor deal in the scheme of things. Getting the blood up is a complete waste of energy. peeves here.....I'd prefer people use their signals. I'd like them to just stop at stop lights and signs (and take their turns correctly), not sit and creep forward like idiots. Turn into their lanes correctly and not cut the corners so tight. Don't encroach the intersection if they can't drive. Stop running red lights. Driving is about aggressively following the rules so we know what each other is doing. It's not about being nice - it's about being predictable. texting - I don't really care if they are talking unless it affects their driving, but then that should be the first thing to put down - I avoid it as much as possible. Most issues I see indicate laziness or selfishness. Most violators I see (in my area) - kids (idiots), housewives (selfish driving), real estate agents (reckless/selfish), well dress middle aged men in luxury cars (selfish), some newly entered female citizens from certain countries (dangerously clueless and dangerously conservative). We should have periodic practical testing to keep a license, especially past some certain age point. We're teaching our daughter now and that awareness really makes us note how much rule breaking and safety violations happen every single second on the road. It's really bad. ... 4. beautiful comment - 1 - experience is earned over time and under mentorship 2 - someone that's already experienced actually sees all aspects of the candidate's ability and inclination to teach - as well as basic skydiving skills and personality 3 - the 'master' should have to recommend the 'candidate' as a pre-req to go test for the rating and you nailed the $$$$ aspect involved as well in terms of candidate preparations ... 5. without the red items, taxes and spending are diodes still, if the 'good times' steady state status is out of whack (i.e., excessive spending, excessive taxes (still net positive to build that margin), then just adjusting from that baseline (lower tax higher spending), and then returning to it on recovery, you still are stuck with excessive everything. I'd love it if we cut it all down to the bare bones (old discussion). Then taxed to a net positive balance. Then implemented exactly your proposal to deal with economic cycles. But the baseline isn't very palatable still. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

  7. agreed - but the stimulus spending needs to be better thought out, IMO than what Bush and Obama set up for their buddies these last 12-16 years.....we need politicians to understand that 'stimulus' "crony awards that last indefinitely" (rough concept - "take the politics out of politics...." - in that case, it's impossible to do it 'right' like you say, in the 'real' world. At that point, you are kind of stuck with the only thing that doesn't destroy the ecomony is being stingy about spending - all the time regardless of the economy's health. The bad times will be bad, but the good times won't spiral out of control) ... 8. Event completed - thanks to those that contributed. And to those that still will in the next month or two. We broke a new record for Parkinson's research contributions. 150 solo skydives over a 17 hour period - all with one arm tied behind his back (ok - tied in front) AND 1 jump at 151 as an 8way with video (I'm hoping someone links the vid to this thread ....... Skyjumpinfool) When Kevin had both arms, he did 100 jumps, and then next event he did 150 (both low due to bad weather much of the day). This time, weather was perfect. So - a personal best at 151 jumps in one day. And I think the previous (documented) record was something like 8 jumps or 10, for a one armed jumper in one day..... ... 9. apparently it's a lot harder to decrease spending away from those emergency levels when the economy is doing well too. so hard, that it's hardly ever mentioned the Keynsians problem is that spending is increased during the bad times - then it's also increased during the good times - then it's also increased during the moderate times. If we have on philosophy that's irresponsible during good times, then we have another philosophy that's irresponsible during bad times too. Our track record of making bad spending and taxing decisions is way more than just flipping a coin would give us. ... 10. You do have to acknowledge that the dems will turn up the media and smearing machinery to full if the reps step off of the dems image of who 'properly' is 'owned' by them. Had the reps put up a very extremely suitable candidate, female or minority, it wouldn't have mattered. You know that too. It's personal destruction nowadays to even verbalize a desire to run for high office in either party. You have to be a fool to do it - the proof is out there with at least 4 still living that succeeded and dozens of others that got names on ballots ..... 'We' (the public) all want good candidates to pick from. But the parties absolutely don't want the other guys to put them up and they'll do anything they can to keep the public from having 2 good choices. Therefore, we don't get 1 good choice either. Default is 0 good choices. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  11. that makes no sense - your 2 way is going to count correctly if put in the back? Is there some affect from the engines you are hypothesizing? this is your strawman, not mine. I already pointed out your dramatic divergence from the topic. where the hell did this come from - we're talking about order WITHIN common fall rate groups - another strawman - when did you stop beating your wife, Billvon? you don't even try to stay on topic anymore. This was clearly noted again and again and again. two big groups and a small group was the example - which thread are you on? the only change discussed in the whole thread was letting the pilot know when you have a big climbout for the first group if you want to put them out first - I don't know what the hell you are talking about here. Let alone why you mention areas to land out. Another moot point. What value is this if you just throw out strawmen and tangents over and over again? ... 17. The same reason that tunnel time shouldn't replace actual jumps in meet the requirements to become an AFFI. Much like the tunnel skills, the teaching is only one part of the overall puzzle needed to make a good AFFI. Some people at larger DZs may forget this, but there are smaller DZ where there is very little in the way of staff. What you end up with is an instructor essentially teaching in a vacuum, where they do the FJC, the ground preps, make the jumps and do the debrief (in the case of AFF, there would be another I, but if that I is a junior instructor, they would be taking their queues from the senior I anyway). The point being that an I needs to be a complete package, who can teach in the classroom, on the DZ, in the plane, in freefall, and effectively supervise in all of those same places, and conduct a good debrief. So just like a certified teacher has a leg-up in some of those areas, so does a certified tunnel instructor. Regardless, there are still the areas not pertaining to their certification where they also need to be proficient in order to do the job. Here's another +100 Edit: side note - this overall thread is great. We see a bunch of early thinly thought out responses, then a clarification of intent and understanding, and an eventual convergence of opinion (at least in general) that's leading to a general understanding of concepts needed to make us better at our jobs and identifying candidate needs for future instructors. It's how discourse should be done. If this was Speaker's corner, it's would have degraded into "you suck", "no, you suck" about 100 posts ago. ... 18. +1 to ufk's post too (though I do think you guys minimize the applicability of the skills learned in the tunnel and in RW competition. I see day to day that these guys fly circles around someone who's (as the example) done 100 "coach" jumps (or see Ron's note about RW jumpers, FF, TIs etc - good post), the overall note was spot on) ... 19. From the article: "McDonald said the Slaton Police Department will issue an apology as long as the mother agrees not to file a lawsuit." Having been offered similar terms myself by an American enforcement agency, I am particularly disgusted by that. DON'T DO IT! Don't let them off the hook. An apology is nothing. An apology is the right thing to start with. However, the fact that the department made it conditional, also makes it meaningless. The honorable thing would be for a leader in the department to apologize regardless of the expectations of any action - that would be the right and sincere thing to do. Apologize with no strings attached. then deal with the fallout anyway. ... 20. I'd say it depends on how much simple entertainment affects people. For me, not one whit. I just hope it's fun to watch and the story keeps my interest and their hidden agenda, if any, can be ignored enough to get through it for entertainment. (Example, by the time The Matrix got into the last movie, it was pretty much just undigestible as entertainment anymore). For others? YMMV But I get what you mean, and I understand there is a large percentage of people that are weak minded enough that this trend will matter. I'll have to see it first. But I consider people are pretty much indoctrinated long before they see movies of this nature. I'd be more worried about Sesame Street (forming minds) having unfair bias over the definition of -social norms and expectations- overcoming that which should be taught by parents. Or grade schools (active indoctrination there, not even subtle), or regular TV or games (constant exposure, kids think killing strangers is cool and guns are held in a jambing fashion), heck even fashion trends - long before feature hollywood presentations. That's why I was being so flip about it, sorry about that. For me, this is a non-issue because of the vehicle used. But, the topic you bring up, if taken in general, is important so I could have gone a level deeper and given you a more fair response. ... 22. good thing or bad thing, surely no movie ever in the history of time has had social messages, or social manipulation ever woven into the plot or visuals this must have been the first time EVER and, certainly, the total lack of progressive messaging and brainwashing is completely absent in today's cinema better get the pitchforks and outrage going here, someone might actually see the context of a movie next thing you know, regular TV shows, etc will have things like pictures of the current or former presidents on people's walls just randomly, or the ratio of gays, or bumbling males will be vastly overrepresented (vs actual population ratios) in TV shows and commercial oh, the horror (I'm not a fan of it myself, but it's silly to be upset at one movie when the overwhelming application is so incredibly present, and even counter culture to this one movie's sneaky little background color) I'll still see the movie, the review aren't that great yet (perhaps this is partly why since the subtle message isn't PC pandering?) - and, like pretty much everything else I've seen lately, I'll have to ignore the crap hollywood sneaks in and try to enjoy the primary plot. In essence, you are saying, like Ann Coulter, "Shut Up and Sing"?? Finally - if anyone gets to be Jesus, then it's Chuck Norris - He gets to be anyone he wants to be. ... 25. 1 - the scenario is that everyone continues to do correct exit separation timing. So you are off on a tangent just for the sake of disagreeing - again. 2 - your statement makes no sense - push the 2way to third in line, you just have the same problem with them too close to the 2nd 8way. Congrats - if you want to ignore my scenario as assume the 2way screws up their delay - instead of them threatening the 1st 8way, they just threatened the 2nd one instead. But it has ZERO to do with exit order, and everything to do with the 2way not taking a correct delay. 3 - your statement is even worse, because the 2nd 8way STILL takes the same amount of time to climb out whether they go 2nd or 3rd - and if they are 3rd, there is even MORE time between the two big groups is your whole comment about who gets hosed on the spot? Upthread we all already acknowledged that asking the pilot for an earlier spot is a good idea for bigger groups if they go out first - if you have something bigger than a 4 way, you tell the pilot for an early green light..... It's not a 'trick' at most places, it's just a good policy. It's an alternative. so what's your point? If the plan was a quick solo or 2way on green, why on earth would you call an early light for a 2way, especially if the whole point is for them do a quick exit on green? this comment is another total tangent. (As for early light JUST for looking and checking? I've never seen a pilot that had to cut it so very close, that they needed to factor in 15 seconds for a quick look - there's usually plenty of time between the first light and the climbout light...) ...
