  1. Please tell me that your only interested in flying the aircraft once it's in the air, please tell me that..... C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  2. I just thought I 'd add this in case it has any relevance: But does the MC - 3 have any resemblance to the old PC? Cause I thought the specs for the MC 3 are public domain? C They kind of look similar...I don't know though.... But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  3. Well, actually it does. C As an example MFF EP's are required before each jump, regardless of experience. But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  4. If ya are going to include patric and Valetine,... Than add Clem Sohn. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clem_Sohn C First wingsuit ? But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  5. An aviator, not known for her jumping (Don't know if she ever jumped, her husband did, for test purposes.) as much as pestering her husband: Gertrude Rogallo C For their vision and inspiration.... But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  6. http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/MainUsersManual.pdf I think this is on page 29. This is also great reading if you haven't done so already: http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/hrdopn.pdf C Not a big fan, as others have already mentioned about pushing the nose in. I hear that expression sometimes, not very descriptive, I have no idea how to actually do this??? That's the problem....being vague and all means different things to different people.... Here is the packing manual that will come with yor new Tri: http://www.flyaerodyne.com/download/Aerodyne_MAINCANOPY_USERSMANUAL.pdf personally I wish they would use a larger canopy in their pictures, the smaller sizes are so easy to pack, kind of a disservice to students and those with larger canopies IMO... And you might also want to take a look here: http://www.performancedesigns.com/faq.asp And the link to Nick speaking about the nose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhEHdKemr1M FF to about 8:20 in the vid.... 7. Dan raises an interesting point about this whole thing and that was how much green or blue should there be? (In the window.) I mean how much of an issue is this?? I've been speaking to some of the manufacturers about the kill line shrinking ( and the response that the bridal also enlongates.) And The big answere that was a surprise to me was the concern about big numbers of PC's being too old.... More than once I have sworn I fully cocked my PC but I wouldn't swear to it in court. I mean I think I have forgotten to cock the thing entirely. (On hurried calls, no excuse, I know.) With my Spectre, which has a long snivel anyways it can be hard to tell. Will the thing pull and deploy the bag even if it's not cocked. Not promoting this type of thing. But on my old Mirage the blue line on the kill line is about 3 inch's long. On my UPT kill line, fully enclosed, the green mark is about one inch long? It is brand new and the accordion folds, the part of the bridal in the main bag, I mean you can just watch it push back on itself as it sort of unfolds a little....??? I suppose a little isn't a big deal, and I have been told that as it ages it won't push as much, but neverless it is a little creepy to watch. It would be more comforting to read in the manual that you have a couple of inch's of play before there are any changes in effectiveness? It's just that I saw so many packing with the PC under everything , and now I see it everywhere that I raised this issue. For me I just want to stack everything I do in my favor. ditto the Brian G method.... I mean I did in fact fold the PC brains way and then I folded it the Pizza method, and or the half / half again. In all cases I can pull out the PC from the pouch, I recommend any and all to try this themselves. But in the Germain method the bridal pull is soo easy and smooth with no bunching up in the pouch (I can see how the folds do in fact bunch up and keep the PC in the pouch, I mean I can pull it out but there is considereable force difference.) it kind of speaks for itself. I guess it is a question of how much drag the bag creates to pull the PC out to prevent the horseshoe.... not related to uncocking but a great reminder while we are in this area. C Perhaps I'm just being paranoid again, I just hope this discussion saves someone some grief.... But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  8. But you don't see hundreds of people with an uncocked PCIT every day so how much effect is it having....? Agreed, But what about the one when this matters???? C Do you teach packing classes with this in mind? I'm going to be aware of this issue more often now than before. It is no longer just kicking the pre-cocked PC out of the way, I am going to make sure that it is to the side and treat it a little more carefully from now on
  9. I am a big believer in large power supplies, because of the stability factor over time. Obviously we can debate endlessly about the necessity of what works as compared with overkill. What's brand new is the 5 Gig chips, and the manufacturers do in fact recommend water cooling. And you would be correct to point out as they do as well, that it's not a necessity but a recommendation. I use water cooling on all the new chips, quiet, foolproof for the most part and increases stability. There are zillions of old stuff out there, this is my caution. the problem is which is which??? I love Intel boards, they are the best, but there are thousands of them out there with hundreds of variants. And most have limited product support because they are manufactured for others... I have pointed out my preference for EVGA Classified Boards and Nvidia SLI systems, cost is a concern, but the speed increase is phenom! I don't overclock, stability and speed is my game. If you want to design a dream system for vidieo why don't you cruze egghead, they are a nice source with good / better return policy. And post your recommendations for equipment here??? It might be nice to see the "List." Then we can compare features, with price, and also add in the bug reports and fixes as they come in???? I like the EVGA 151 with an i7, water cooled. Memory from Corsair or Nvidia. Any of the HD EVGA or PNY type Nvidia boards. (in the 150 - 200 each price range.) Mostly because of stability and compatibility compared with bugs...I currently use the 120 SSD's from Intel in a raid 0 with two drives giving the C drive, boot drive as you call it a big speed increase. I have a number of 2T drives as the D, E (whatever) for storage. Never the less I back everything up that took over ten min to make, up in 2 different places. I do like the thrmaltake 1000 W supplies. And I'm happy with any number of name brand monitors, 2 of them....Sony, LG, viewsonic, I tend to stick with the bigger names in monitors. I always recommend you purchase the operating system, if you purchase a prebuilt, considering most new prebuilt systems the back up is on the drive and suseptiable to failure along with the drive. But mostly I just find someplace that sells Win 7 for 50. bucks...if you can find such a place recently let me know... You can always pay high at egghead for Microsoft products. I use Ebay sometimes but always, and always make sure you have the number if you buy the OEM versions..... The above is generally why I don't go on equipment pissing contests, cause you and a handful here are the only ones that understand this stuff. Generally most just want a quick answere and the question then is if they can afford it or not. C I'm not generally satisfied with "rinky dinky" anything, I get your point, but there is also a lot of trial and error with making your own, I think this scares too many away from making their own. It really isn't all that hard.... But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  10. Agreed, but my point is: I don't know how much the thing has moved??? Then the next thing is to recock the thing while the canopy is in the bag???? Then we did a test while an unsuspecting packer was constantly pulling the PC bridal out from under themselves and in fact the thing was fully uncocked! This caught my attention....
  11. I'm sorry about your friends, but I don't know who is and who isn't alive. I read the stickies and try to find information from many past posts, perhaps I'm the only one who does? Bringing up an old post saves time for some, and considering the number of times I have read others fast on the draw to criticize any and all, I usually find old threads in the hopes that someone can learn from others. Especially when something that is so simple as grabbing your PC from under your canopy during packing can undo the thing... I searched and found this thread to resurrect because it covered so much ground but it seems to overlook this very common practice which could and I suspect has caused some, some grief. I would be proud of your friend for participating and getting involved to help others.... I did repost my point about how pulling on the bridal can "uncock a set PC." I now await all of those that will point out that this has already been covered elsewhere, which it has, but this one was soo deeply buried that it is basically hidden in a few other threads. When I saw this in more than a few packing classes, and in more than a few company sponsored vid's, and in my travels have seen this all too frequently I decided it was worthy of mentioning again in a thread titled things that can cause a collapsible pilot chute to uncock itself.... Again sorry about your buddy, I know this feeling well... C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  12. Did a search, found a few similar, request to post under new title... This is actually a common problem that frequently gets overlooked. Your getting the air out of your canopy, on the ground, laying on everything and you notice the bridal and PC under everything, so you pull on the bridal to geet it out of the way.... this de cocks the PC. You forget to check, cause you already cocked the PC, in your head you have already checked everything so you forget to check the window...Then you close everything up... Watch for this and you will see (hundreds of ?) people do this everyday....Wink C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  13. I spend some time converting varying file formats to other formats, for quick and dirty viewing. I don't spend time anymore doing editing, all the cutting and pasting, well I don't have that fine artistic talent that you guys have, nor do I have that musical ear which you are well known for and admired as well.
  14. I was just referring to the song, but now that you mention it???? Actually on the DZ I'm a lot tamer than here. On DZ dot com this allows me to vent a little at your expense....
  15. Worth mentioning again.... Notes from the Know it all: THIS This is actually a common problem that frequently gets overlooked. 18. I used to fix computers. Worked for Control Data for a bit /Government. I'm a lousy programmer. As a hobby in College I used to help all the gamers with their hardware. Nothing like some juiced up gamer with cash to purchase the most powerful i7 or Xezon with a 20 mb parking area. And a triple SLI Nvid system. Also part time used to set up AutoCAD, if you really use AutoCAD then you really need a dedicated machine. Years of telling people this, about autocad and using other applications never worked from the bigginining remember setting ports and all of that fun sound blaster channel switching pins to get everything to work. Don't need the big guns for most software, just a fast machine and knowing how to get rid of all the other shit new machines come with. Way too much bloatware. I think this is the most underrated thing you can do for vid work is to trim all the fat off of your desktop and use that machine just for vid work...That and Raid 0. Physical limits of chips has been reached, that's why new design is architecture based and things have slown down somewhat. But I love the new EVGA boards, would like to be able to afford a X chip as well... Yes I agree that desktop systems will continue, but I do see some disturbing trends that are consumer driven, or as I like to point out driven by apps that generate revenue, cause the general public isn't so smart.... Think of it this way cause the manufacturers do....large numbers of people want their computers to do simple things and they will pay for this service. Small numbers of people want to purchase their own software that they use and understand at home and only want to pay once for the initial purchase price. Billions of people want apps. Only a hundred thousand or so want programs... Huge numbers of business are now totally "Time Shared" with off site IT departments. So much for moving massive files around. Microwave links...and fiber. Chances are you don't even have a union projectionist at your local theater anymore. Movies are distributed by telecommunications equipment now a days, many are streamed from servers direct from your buds at Disney! Now a days it's not so much about horsepower as it is sticking microprocessors into every appliance and toy that people can imagine. Do we really need this shit? What are the consequences to society? I can't wait for the digital display for my casket. C Saw a lot of what worked and what didn't, made my purchasing decisions based upon this. I also am a firm beliver in continuing education, I have returned to university many times as compared with watching tv. Still can't spell worth shit though.... But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  19. You guys are talking about the mean, median , and mode and the standard deviation from the mean. But what's the context? If you are just measuring something fixed like opening time then if the std dev is within an alpha value that you set, what are you going to set it at and why. More tests are not necessary if the std dev is close. If the std dev is large then more tests might make some sense. Your just approaching an average at that point. So much of numbers is how you define the parameters of what you are looking at, be wary of approaching something like opening time with words like confidence levels and such because you start to get confused with experiments where we manipulate some independant variable, The N depending upon effect size and the alpha level due to the possibility of chance then have some meaning. Never forget things like effect size. If I was to manipulate something like some experiment where I drop a hammer, with considerable force on your foot. The level would approach 1. No need to run the trials much more than once. On the other hand If I was to drop a feather on your foot, large numbers N might be nessasary to tease out the effects of chance, the results then would depend upon what a level we set and the results may or not be signifigant. Signifigance at which level you set is the term I think some of you are getting confused with... If your just measuring some value then the std dev is what is signifigant. Not much math really... the std determines the N in this case. The real question is how are people measuring the time? With a stop watch? This is the real problem and is the reason behind the scenes that no official body really wants to get into this.... It is not possible to get any actionable information from a film and some one with a stop watch watching said film. Unless of course the numbers started varying by large amounts, say ten seconds one trial and 15 seconds the next. But when every test opening only varies by hundriths not much is too be gained. You guys are also forgetting the margin for error with these devices. Think about the speeds at 800 feet, the time left is the time needed to open! Which is of course what is driving this whole thread.... cause there ant much time left to steer or decelerate!!!! Depends upon the canopy!!!! Not the opening altitude. C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  20. ditto the not much, Microsoft continues to push pay as you go services and the whole market is headed that way...so expect to see more, but very Disney esk simple apps for those that like that sort of thing. Ditto the SSD for everything, the bugs seem to be out and my most recent ones work great in a Raid 0 configuration. But I still immediately back everything up! Motherboards from EVGA still seem to be expensive with the top line processors, but the need for speed.... More of a function of the program and your usage than anything else at this point. There is a trend again back to monitor type computers that are not upgradable. This may kill the gamers and tower's wait and see.... C Most all the programmers are moving as fast as they can to mobile apps for your phone, this is and has already had some negative effects for pc desktop programs.... time will tell if the desktop will survive??? But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  21. No one is FLAMING a newbie here....so take a chill pill and relax... Some of us have concerns and this is for anyone, not just you about the effort and amount of information available to anyone here and out in the jumping world. There is a lot of information out there, and this exact issue has been discussed in other posts many times. As you can see there are a number of wonderful people, knowing this have offered some help anyways. In skydiving travelling over an hour and bitching about it isn't going to get you anywhere! Many individuals would love to only have to travel 2 hours to get to a place to jump! We all already know that Chuting Star has a written policy regarding sizing at the time you place your order, we all already know this. You question is kind of awkward in this regard??? It's like holding up a sign saying that you didn't take the time to read their policy and now you are bitching here. Which is fine, cause someone will generally take the time to answere your question anyways. I have a concern that at your local DZ you didn't try on various sizes before you made your purchase, its not about you, it's more about the culture and factors about trying on different pieces of personal gear. There are in fact people that don't want to lend their helmets to others because it's like sharing a toothbrush, ecch! That's them and that's ok. But there are others that won't even ask anyone else because for whatever reason they won't even ask... I am sure that "NWFlyer" has a concern for any other events and issues you may have, but from a place of concern, she is not flaming you, she see's something that many of us see and that is regarding your approach and the amount of effort as compared with asking others for advice. To me it seems that you lack a little effort on your part as compared with just asking the public for advice. It raises issues about your commitment and personal responsibility? This is just a thought, I'm not making any personal judgments here...
  22. No not per say, but a trend in jumping to pass the buck.... I got a little heated in another forum area and may have used inappropriate language to illustrate my point. This is my point: Regardless of any particular aircrafts configuration, I can hit the tail, or other parts if and when I chose. It's relatively easy to strike the tail of any 182, 206. It's relatively easy to hit the tail of a King Air or PAC, if your determined to do so. A little harder to hit a DH-6 tail, but its realativly easy to do so if you jump hard enough. It's up to you.... not the pilot...or the aircraft configuration. Bring wing suits into the picture and you can see how ineffective the subject of aircraft configuration becomes. The pilot can do nothing for you in the majority of these situations. But humans being what they are trade safety for blaming something, anything, over thinking whenever they get a chance. Making statements that the pilots are going to ensure your safety by making sure the aircraft is properly configured is something that jumpers want to hear! It then becomes one less thing that you don't have to think about. And then someone either forgets to tell a student don't do this or that, or the worst case we have jumpers that think this isn't something they have to worry about. The incidents continue to show that jumpers were unaware of their responsibility exiting an aircraft. They sure as "heck" didn't do what they did on purpose? So what is going on? IMO: as a group and in large numbers we are failing each other to teach, (Because it's politically incorrect to tell or open our mouth's.) or we are failing to look out for each other because this skill isn't being taught anymore. We are responsible for each others safety in so many areas, weather we realize this or not.... But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  23. your sarchasim is wonderful....
  24. You can discount the issue and say to move on but that isn't likely to change anything. I don't disagree with what Mike is saying but if you really want to make changes you have to understand why the procedures exist and find ways to have them changed. -Michael We have AAD's, so jumpers can not worry about that.... We have riggers so jumpers don't have to worry about that.... We have packers so jumpers don't have to worry about that.... And now we have pilots so we don't have to worry about that.... Try trusting your pilot when you jump up exiting a 182? C I don't give a fuck what the pilot does, I can hit the tail of a: 182, 206, etc, PAC, DH-6, and especially a King Air whenever I fucking want to... REGARDLESS OF ITS FUCKING CONFIGURATION! So take the idea that the pilot is going to save your ass and shove it in deep.... But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  25. Ya for some of you this is a troll looking for a problem or whatever that saying is. I did a search on this subject and the other subject line I wanted to point out that was something like: AFF and the time to the A license, or heck the B lic.... "But that's the "beauty" of AFF: you finish the course but you still are not qualified for an A license. How much supervision you get between AFF "graduation" and your A license varies significantly between drop zones." And this killed someone.... It's my point that as a group we do a really shitty job of overseeing students in this period of time. My differing opinion with MM, God love em...is that what if every other jumper on that load knew that the aircraft may not have been configured optimally for a overexcited student? Again work on the skydiver and their environment. Here is the vid, again of the door falling off...I'm spinning the tale a little to point out how can a bunch of jumpers not know how to lift the door as compared with releasing the top ramp latch? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYXA8WsJoFw You can blame them, or you can understand that this time period including our attitudes twords new enviornments sucks.... What if instead of a tail strike we had a plane load of jumpers that refused to get off? What message would this send to a poor DZO operator? This is what I mean about personal responsibility and how to foster it, or you can just go along with the crowd and pretend you know everything that is going on around you. We don't foster speaking up in this business but we sure are fast on the trigger to blame others... Here is something that I posted in the past: MM makes a very heartfelt and passionate point regarding the pilots perspective. It is a real big brother view point that so many people share that frequently is rebutted with the personal freedom point of view. The pilot literally is fixed to their seat, they can do nothing to help the hapless jumper that gets into trouble. They can do what they can regarding the configuration of their aircraft and in some aircraft this is critical. On the other hand this may indicate pilot error in this case? But even if, and I hesitatingly use the if word here, this does not absolve the jumper from his or her responsibilities regarding a proper exit for the conditions at the time. MM's passionate appeal is long overdue but on the other hand it may support the generally held idea that someone else may or may not be responsible for your safety. Coddeling jumpers by reassuring them that the pilot is in command is sending the wrong message. C Having a safe jump aircraft configuration is something that every jumper should be aware of, there is a shared responsibility here... To illustrate my point we are not even using the words "jump" in speaking about exits. The terminology in use is "proper presentation to the relative wind," as far as exiting: "leave the door and drop." "Arch, Drop, look up." How many have experienced a student that jumped out the door with such force that the tail of the aircraft moved sideways, a little more than normal? I don't even like the idea of wingsuiters on a King Air. These are things that the pilot can do nothing about. MM is spot on, and I am so sad that again a needless incident has taken the life of a wonderful person. But the pilot can not and is not able to ensure your safety. Only you and those around you can save your ass when the shit hits, and those around you are more important than you think!!! But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
