  1. Lots of posts about dating and what if you break up? Why does every break up hav to be bad? This implies that a lot of relationships lack authentic communication? Why enter into something if your worried about having a bad outcome? Sounds like many shouldn't be in relationships? One person has unrealistic, fantasy expectations? Date, find something out about each other, date someone else.... Like the song: Don't get ((fucked) err) stuck by the very first one? C Just thinkin out loud.... But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  2. I was trying to rephrase this in "other" terms to better understand the question. So As I understand this??? : The person below, performing a barrel roll is now some how responsible for someone above, who may or may not pull whenever they want, (conceivably they could just move out of the way...) and at the same time, as in the vid also responsible for someone who has in fact opened up underneath. Does the highest jumper not have to do a barrel roll? Seriously, what action do I take while I'm in a barrel roll, clearing the airspace above me?? What would be your Organizer's answere to that??? Must be some sort of Mad Skilzz thing??? Seriously? I do a barrel roll, and I think I see someone above me, what do I do then? Waiting?............ C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  3. I haven't been to the area, except for the tunnel from hell, in a few years. That said there are a number of places that do some tandems that have a local group. Many head off to Mesquite, which is a short drive (closer than Eloy) for the biggist fun jumping, but I don't know for sure if that is still the go to place. I can tell ya watch out for some of the vegitation Those bushes can kill. Keep watching this site, some one should answere that is currently jumping there, and I think there is some rateing thing here on this site somewhere, not sure if they have a face book page.... C Where are you moving from? It can get warm there...you might want to get acclimated for a couple of weeks before doing anything really strenuous outdoors?
  4. The new upgrades from the Etrex you have have all kinds of new features, like glideslope, glideslope to target, speed, and getting air speed is supposedly easy, but I haven found that so easy, and speed to target and vertical speed as well as a deviation screen to watch if you want to hop in a cloud. Trouble is at this point there is no easy way to collect the data. It is a real pain to steer and hold the thing, as well as being a major distraction safety wise. Additionally your body can interfere with reciving the signal as well as the thing is a little jumpy... But it does seem to work. I went looking for the Etrex that you mentioned for that jumpmaster program and Garmin informed me that many of their new higher end models basically do all that the older models did plus some new features. They say that the data can be streamed out of the usb port to any device that has software but I dropped the search at this point.... I think soon someone will have real time software and devices that can help with much of this, time will tell... I really would like to know what some of our canopys are really doing, I did find the glideslope to target entertaining though! Set a waypoint on the field, set the screen to show glideslope on one screen , and glideslope to target in another window, and it worked very well. You could play with your glideslope to match the GPS's glideslope to target and get the hang of it very quickly.... C Thanks again Doug... The tracking feature is available from Garmin, but the monthly cost for the service was about 60 bucks and I just didn't want to spend the cash to see how well it works at the moment. The other thing was the "kid finder" device, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with that thing? But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  5. Many remember those days of pouring over catalogs, for endless hours. Waiting for money in the bank and for clouds to clear. The smell of the fuel.... Many "lifers" have made their own canopy from scratch! God bless em! It's all of those who have tinkered and played around with stuff that has fostered progress and increased safety for all.... Now get out there and jump this thing, pay careful attention to others, learn, be safe, HAVE FUN!
  6. Wow Man, some of us in the room are cops, and most of us in the room at the moment have public safety experience and everyone here thinks of themselves as responsible careing people.... And not a fucking one of us thought about what you just said You could hear a pin drop right now...... Skinnay, the thing about the blanket, you r a fucking sage man.
  7. http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/11/justice/florida-rape-case/?iref=obnetwork What kind of neighborhood is this??? What a shitty deal. the poor girl.... C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  8. Mirror sunglasses, indoors no less, ... "People with nothing to hide ,...Don't ask for lawyers" "We just have a few questions,....if your innocent, then you have nothing to worry about." Changing world folks.... It was Bill Clinton who said: "In the upcoming Americka, ...Only criminals and drug dealers will use cash...." 50 % of those camera things in your local Whalmart are empty! It's just that you don't know which ones have cameras in tham and which ones don't. So from their perspective the camera things are a deterrent. Who does this affect??? A couple of months ago, well a year or two ago, on the Penn turnpike (Not shure if in Penn of this was Ohio) anyways: At the tool booth,.... "Sir please pull over to the side," "Why, what did I do?" "We monitor, or actually the computer, calculates your average speed from the time you picked up your toll ticket till now, in your case the average speed indicates you traveled in excess of the posted limits." " A trooper will be along shortly..." C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  9. Law number 12: COCK your pilot chute before you place your main into its' bag. C Thanks to Rigger Rob for this: "your greatest risk is only half-cocking your pilot-chute and towing it all the way to the planet."
  10. This is a great point, and I'm sure Gerado will want to chime in as well....
  11. Just move to France, already done. This is sort of true,.... In France I mean.... Goin into a bank is already a crime with something over your face in some states!!!! In most states now, if you are wearing sunglasses during the commission of the crime, they add on additional charges! I predict more missing eyeballs!!! C They have already passed draconian laws in the name of child support... Where are they going to stop when the war cry is: We are doing this for the public good? I'm going to just go and put more foil on my head, thank you ..... But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  12. It's a public forum and you asked a question. He has every right to post. Ignore the thread if you don't like the answers. It doesn't look like your listening to anyone anyway. Hey don't be so hard on this kid??? What's up? You havin a bad day, seriously??? Yo know how I write, and some of my thoughts, and I'm not even maken a peep over this one.... After the traveling of the last few weeks, what a glorious day, sunny, nice breeze, cold drinks, hot plane, this place is great... Kelly you don't have to point out the oblivious, obviously he , she, it needs assistance of some sort... This new internet crowd is sometimes tough to pin down??? He had me at his weight and number of jumps.... The Optimium is a very nice canopy, no doubt, but personally I don't give a fucking shit about the brand, I only care about one thing with a reserve... And that is get one. I always jump with a reserve. Well most allways... Anyways the cart is before the horse when you hear that "I bought this or that" and then the subject of wingloading comes up!!! My advice is at 23 jumps you have made a mistake, as some very well meaning people have already pointed out. Take the advice. I know it's not what you want to hear , that you mention money and then the joy of having your own equipment. But you yourself have asked for this advice here, you have put your foot into it when in the first post you have stated your making purchasing decisions based upon your projected increase in ability? It's like saying: Hey I'm going to be an expert, (ya I know you didn't say this, but the effect on others is the same.) Anyways "Hey, I'm going to be great some day, but right now I need help learning all of the stuff that I don't yet know what I need to learn." So here is my shopping list, look at the stuff I now have...or want So your exit wt is 235 and you want a 160 (anything) That puts your wl at 1.47? I don't know where your located at the moment, but I think I just saw Windmiller and Batch on the other side of the tent, I'm at DeLand till the pm today, in the resteraunt which is the best DZ food place in the jumpin world, just imop, and slightly buzzed, but ZI can't need or give out anything that really dosent make much sense at the moment so my apologies, but those two could give yo a hand... anyways where was I ,... O'h kid, stay safe Noone wants you to hurt yourself and that is what is behind most of the rhetoric your reciving at the moment
  13. What a drama queen...no wonder her one year in the sport has felt like 15 to her. Every day is an endless series of brushes with death...
  14. I think the real danger of cocking your PC while the canopy is in the bag, is the fact that it may not fully "cock," and if their is trapped material, esp if you have an open kill line, the kill line will actually go to a non-cocked position as the bag pushes on it. Has anyone every done this to see? We did it the other day on some new bridals, with fully enclosed kill lines. The bridal bunched up like an accordion with all of the folds you would expect, and when we opened the pack job the PC was practically in the full kill position! All of the accordion folds pushed back, the section in the bag wouldn't go to where it needed to be cause the canopy prevented this. (cocking the pc when the canopy was completely in the bag.) Made a very, very strong argument for cocking the pc first! C The center cells, take a hit cause of fingernails, dirt, rough surfaces, wood floors (splinters,) and the fact that so many are laying on them during packing, as just a few examples of the increased wear. I'm not sure as you point out about causing small tears, (cocking the pc when the canopy is in the bag already) but cocking the pc when the canopy is already in the bag is a really bad idea for the other reason, it might not work! C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  15. Second, the ... Whaat he said: I wouldn't bother.... Canopy looks fairly new from your pictures, age is important, so again how old is this thing? Cause if you tell me this canopy is 14 years old I'm gonna start askin if every inch has been given this same screwtenty? I suspect if you found these small ones , your doing a great job with inspecting on a regular basis Does it have a history, I mean tree, bush, are you flippin it into the ground to deflate it? That kind of stuff? Like did it happen as your walking back and it snagged and then you inspected it? As compared with pulling it out of storage after a few years? C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  16. One of course has to be careful in conversations whether someone means their "glide" as the true glide ratio through the air, or the glide ratio over the ground with the current winds. Half brakes is a lot. I'd rather teach that "in general" 1/4 brakes as usually increases the glide ratio, for typical larger canopies. Once you get into 1/2 brakes, really slowing the canopy but probably not reducing descent rate much more, then it gets trickier to predict without data. When you get into small canopies that are built to be ground hungry, built with nose low trim, there things change a bit. They drop out of the sky with such a poor glide ratio, that when applying 1/4 brakes or 1/2 brakes or even 3/4 brakes (compared to zero brakes), it may improve the glide ratio. (I know that sometimes someone under a small crossbrace, in deep brakes, can almost stay next to a student flying at full flight under some big boaty canopy. As soon as the small canopy's brakes are let up, it drops away steeply.) At least all this is impression from the numbers I've seen and my experience. I appreciate the reply, I used your stuff from a couple of years ago. Mr. Sherman calls em lawn darts, but some of these darts can increase their glide thru the air by about 900 feet per thousand by going to some intermediate toggle position. I say thru the air because so many get confused with the ground speed confusion which is the stuff that this penetration issue arises in the first place. It's not penitratation as much as it is knowing your particular canopy. I was on a canopy a couple of days ago, that did precisely what your indicating, it went down, in half toggles, and it went forward at the same speed as full flight. When on the ground I heard the usual stuff about being downwind and the penetration would have been better if that canopy was flown in full flight etc, etc. This is why I was trying to start gathering data in units of 1000 foot altitude. It's a gravity powered device, that will move at a certain speed, depending upon how the toggles are held. Trying to simplify some of the little understood concepts about how our kites fly. All to often, Mr. Shermans vidios are a prime example of this, anyone starts speaking about glide and all kinds of crap about wind speed and ground speed come up, etc... I'm not talking about the inertia at ground level in gusts. Now there's a subject that could use some additional interpretation. My point being, in most respects if your landing in a gust, and the gust stops, you stop flying and drop. This is beyond anyon's control and I wish this was more of an independent point than any particular skill that many hold....in high and variable wind conditions! C Thanks! But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  17. You know you have a drinking problem when: a sixty mile round trip is a 'short drive' for a bottle of hooch I can't find the link at the moment, but the other day, July 4, 2013 : Other liquor stores started objecting to the fact that some stores could be open based upon their proximity to a neighboring state on sundays... Their logic was that it wasn't fair that they could be open and then they in effect were having the same economic impact and unfair competition as the stores near the state lines. In effect a ripple of complaints. The stores now more mid state were bitchin that they were loosing sunday business cause the stores near the lines could be open and they couldn't. So in effect they were pointing out that all the law has done was give a boost to the stores near state lines and screwed the rest of them... Why the citizens of the state enacted the laws in the first place was and is lost on everyone.... I mean where do you draw the line? C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  18. I wanted to flesh out some numbers to lend support and also to add support to knowing a little bit more about how our canopies fly and especially the idea of penetration, such as when you are caught downwind and attempt to make it back by using ½ brakes. Which for some canopies this might be a good idea and for others this is the wrong approach. Using your data, for a FB 200 at the .94 wing loading, you have in free flight (toggles full up) and please help me here if I make a boo boo, FF: 22fps forward speed and 14 fps downward. ½ Brakes: 11 fps forward and 9 fps downward? Let’s say we are at 1000 feet altitude. In the ½ brake configuration this gives us 111 seconds from 1000 feet until we hit the ground? (Straight line, no density altitude stuff, no wind, etc…) Basically 1000 divided by the time 9fps will give us 111 seconds? During this time of 111 seconds we will travel >>> 111seconds times 11fps = 1222 feet. In the full flight configuration: 1000 / 14 = 71.5 seconds 71.5 x 22 fps we will travel 1571 feet. So in effect by using ½ brakes we lose 350 feet? This makes the argument for penetration on this canopy, all other things being equal. Fly fast for distance. Now using another’s data for a different canopy, (astute readers will recognize these numbers.) Full flight: 67 fps forward, 29 fps downward. ½ Brakes: 36 fps forward, 12 fps downward. From 1000 feet you will travel about 689 feet farther in brakes than in full flight! This makes the penetration argument and technique wrong! You clearly fly father in brakes than full flight! So making the statement that to make it back isn’t soo much flying in full flight as it is you should know yor canopie! True or not??? C Thanks again
  19. WASHINGTON — The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, released the following statement regarding the crash landing of Asiana Flight 214 in San Francisco on Saturday, July 6, 2013. The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), as the largest nongovernmental safety organization in the world, continues to monitor the accident investigation of Asiana 214 and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)’s ill-advised release of partial data in the aftermath of this tragedy. The NTSB’s release of incomplete, out-of-context information has fueled rampant speculation about the cause of the accident. The field phase of the investigation is barely three days old, and the pilots on the flight deck, at the controls of the aircraft, had little opportunity to provide vital information as to what exactly happened during the event before disclosing data recorded during the last moments of the flight. In the interest of providing context to the information already disclosed, ALPA calls on the NTSB to, at the very least, elaborate on factual material that has been excluded from public releases but must be considered in determining not only what happened, but why. For example: • Why was the Instrument Landing System (ILS), a critical aid to pilots, out of service? • In the absence of the ILS, was an alternate space-based navigation capability, such as Required Navigation Performance (RNP), available and in use? • Were other aids to accurate vertical positioning, such as the Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) lights, functional, and if not, why not? • Was the crew using onboard aids such as Vertical Navigation (VNAV) to determine a precise vertical path? • Did the crew’s training include proper use of all these capabilities? • What were the indications shown on the flight instruments available to the pilots, and how did this information compare to what was recorded? These are just some of the critical questions that need to be investigated in order to determine the entire chain of events leading to the accident. Without the full body of facts surrounding a catastrophic event, partial or incomplete information can lead to erroneous conclusions and, in turn, skew the perception of individuals’ behavior. This could then lead to misguided assessments of the crew’s intentions and actions. ALPA calls on the international aviation community, including our government and industry safety partners around the world, to redouble its efforts to gather the full body of factual knowledge necessary and release that information accordingly. Only then can the global safety community be able to identify potential hazards and continue to make safety improvements in every aspect of the aviation system. Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world’s largest pilots union, representing more than 50,000 pilots at 33 airlines in the United States and Canada. C This still applies... But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  20. Read the companies PFM's, pilot's are "required" to monitor. The Boeing FM makes the same point. This was one of my earlier points, that so many want to lambast me for... Find it for yourself....If I post a copy, anyone is just free to say they don't belive it or that its: " I think you're just making this one up." I'm not. Do a search for the "LGA SOPA" read it, and then get the "777 FM" read that, get the particular Company FM and CRM procedures manuals... and then do a search on how the PPA and the Controllers Union are trying to change things as they currently are...especially in the very few high traffic areas such as San Fran and NY. Or you can go to the FAA's facebook page and read what many others wrote back in 2008 (?), can't remember...(if they haven't removed it by now...) And when yo have done all of this, get back to us in a few weeks, cause it is going to take yo that long...and share your opinion??? C Or go to sleep tonight and just blame the pilots for fucking up, Whateeever gets you people thru the night.... And add tons of stuff like this as well: http://www.faa.gov/nextgen/snapshots/slides/?slide=15 http://www.faa.gov/nextgen/snapshots/slides/?slide=13 But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  21. The NTSB just got more than a few million to recommend , well: New Reccomendations. The latest data collected where states have repealed their blue laws, such as in MA, to favor liquor stores being open, continues to show higher than average fatality rates. There have been recent attempts, as they do every year, to repeal the insanity. MADD points out that these laws didn't work....Politicos in MA do nothing....No current legislator want's to repeal the stuff that got them elected even though the numbers and public opinion show other wise. Many might say putting such draconian measures as the NTSB is currently attempting is a good thing and may make our roads safer. God knows, that driving is a dangerous thing for our loved ones and children. And this kind of intervention is needed, we really do need to do something about the highway carnage that is just "accepted" by the public. On the other hand I disagree with the unbridaled attempts that many agencies go to, to justify their own exsistance. My main point would be that as citizens we have given up our control. That control is Democracy! The NTSB is on a roll right now to justify their exsistance, recognize it for what it is... You decide if it's for the better... C I shouldn't do a search for past events, that current day events show that some legislation isn't working? Recent funding, this year,...makes this 10 year old thread more relevant than ever? MADD in MA has shown this link and done a great job in MA and they are privately funded for the most part... The NTSB has launched recent public PSA's, I posted a link to their most recent, here it is again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F36wWX1ZI70 This was done on May 14, 2013...just one of their "Operation Zero" initiatives that has taken place in the last few months. (O'h I get it I'm about 30 days late???) (and they have released, multiple vids by the way in the last 20 days or so...) This will undoubtedly push those states that are on the fence as to changing their OUI /DUI laws, this week and in November, many states will change there laws this month, under the guise of protecting their people for "summer" driving. (Summer fatalities due to OUI issues get more press.) So the point being .1 V .08 is being decided right now as most legislators are on holaday. "There back," in a few days.... But YOU won't find out about it until they have made the change... So speed boy here is right on, and I couldn't find any other releveant threads that say what he said so eloquently!!! I guess because it's current?? Andrea???
  22. If you are within 30 miles of the border your hard liquor stores in MA, and a few other states are open...
