  1. If there is any message to this thread... I say stay out of Mexico... Many have pointed out that they are enjoying their margaritas on some beach somewhere, but I'm still hearing stories about the many that travel to the border and other places that are paying ransoms to return home and the poor medical treatment they have recived. Many resorts have their own security forces and standby doctors. Untill Mexico gets the message that the Americkans are not coming anymore they are not going to do anything meanining full to solve their gang issues. There is just way to much cash in a country that is more corrupt than ours to risk sending our children there because of this very issue in the first place! Peresonally I'mm going to donate another brick for the wall.... C And who's to say the chief wasen't working for a rival gang and darwinisim at work? But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  2. Interesting observation you are making,... It might be more informative to ask which pilots wear parachutes and why. Differing aircraft, fly differently, like most Otter pilots don't wear E parachutes, do you know why? Most Cessna pilots do. C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  3. John, 90 percent of the time the bay is overcast at 800 - 1200, which means Cat II Cat III autocoupled approaches! (or however you wish to phrase this) having any system NOT UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE FAA down and the port authority having a homemade approach procedure, that is not listed, such as switching from one parallel runway to another and the media selectively fails to report this????? All jumbo flights are under IFR rules! The insurance companies demand this, this is common knowledge, and is the primary reason that all flights are coupled or at least slaved to the FD! You observation that these pilots can make visual approaches, and this is a practiced E procedure, is valid in the sense that they have the ability, but they do not and are not allowed to make visual approaches. The news again is reporting from the director of the NTSB who are at war with the FAA that the Vref needs to be at a certain speed.... The Vref for every 777 after crossing the ocean is from about 122 to 128 indicated! AND the NTSB want's to show the public that they are in command so they report speeds, but don't list the actual speed???? This is total bullshit!!!!! Recognize a witch hunt when you see it!!! This is my point!!! It is way to early to participate in any meaningfull discussion of what happened from a agency trying to show that it can do the job with a bunch of inexperienced investigators without any experience, training, or flying experience!! Most all senior FAA crash investigators have been replaced with these knee jerking fast talking NTSB wanabees, the public are like sheep... The NTSB is putting on a show for the public and once again they are trying to show that they are better with their people than the FAA! The FAA would have never opened their mouth this early because of the complexities of the system, and for this they faced a lot of public wrath, but as a rule months later they generally got it right! The NTSB is not the FAA! Nor has the Boeing crash assistance division even hit the ground yet...You don't see the Boeing team being intervevied do ya??? Those guys, all high time A&P and considered the most knowledgable people on the field have yet to be "invited" This is what should be front page news!! And the NTSB was wrong to publish approach speeds that they have already demonstated that they have gotten it wrong!!! Saying they were at a Vref of below 137 is like holding up a sign to every pilot that they don't know what they are talking about. The news media getting Barry Stifler to comment is the same that happens every day down on Broadway, paid to make a insidious uniformed comment for cash is not responsible reporting! C There is more to this that is not currently being reported, the system may have in fact failed, and failed in a way that highlights the irresponsible nature of the failure of many differing agencies to communicate with each other!!! The damming information, if correct, is not recognizing the DP as it developed, but on the other hand if this was a coupled approach it is dammn near impossible to recognize the 1000 threshold displacement rule for this aircraft coming in over water with an extended VASI GR system. And they have already said the system was compromised! It is way to early to hang the "pilot's" as the media is doing! And please notice in these aircraft both pilots are responsible and required for all landings. But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  4. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/39516346/ns/us_news-life/t/no-pay-no-spray-firefighters-let-home-burn/ In case anyone has any illusions about where this trend is headed, I'll reference what happened in Mid americka a few years ago... A small town in Tenn? S Carolina, one of those progressive states..... Small town, fire department says they want more money, everyone already paying taxes, and this is the key point...everyone already paying taxes...small town fire chief says if you want fire protection have to pay extra...puts everyones name of pays extra on list,...some people can't afford extra! Fire breakes out at family home, name not on list, home destroyed because fire department watches it burn! True story. and these are the people that we are electing and volunteering to protect us? Something is wrong! C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  5. It is still less people than are killed daily on the roads of the US! Yet no one cares for traffic safety. I care about traffic safety, and the link with proper law enforcement! Generally everytime I point this out many rush to the point that we spend millions on road signs and other things that don't amount to a pile of crap Same number of people got wacked at 911 as at pearl harbor...we spend billions and billions getten revenge, but the bottom line is 70,000 people, many in CA get whacked on our highways each year and or that's ok though We should do what we did in Vietnam and allow the media full acess and not that Desert drizzil shit, full fucking access cause the same number of kids got whacked as do each year in this country! perhaps we should start leaving the wrecks where they crash for all to see?? C Most likely this dick pilot pulled the: "cancel services,...field in sight," so that he could pull a 25 degree turn and impress his copilot! happens more often than you think. (Considering the fact that the Bay area is under SVFR most of the time.) C When I first post'd this I was making a WAG about the ILS procedures. This is standard procedure at most every airport in the world.... "cleared for the visual," is the phrase heard hundreds of times cause every commercial aircraft is basically under IFR rules, EVEN IN BLUE SKIES, until they are on the ground... My spy in the sky tells me that there is a bit of an issue with this flight because someone is sayin that the plane did in fact say they had the visual but now the Port Authourity is sayin that the ILS was down, and there was a notam about this! Which is bull shit cause it's approach controls responsibility to fan in the arrivials before ground gets the aircraft... It is so common to ride the ils that this is in fact standard procedure, but it appears that airport personell and not the FAA might have mad a major fuck up here???? I guess we will have to wait till this hits the fan so to speak!!!! I am really concerned that the local media gets so called aviation experts to say their WAGs about visual approaches before the fire is even out???? This is supoosedly the same group that is behind Gerado and all of that very excellent and factual reporting! But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  6. Isn't this an older Carley Simon song? C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  7. I wanted to flesh out some numbers to lend support and also to add support to knowing a little bit more about how our canopies fly and especially the idea of penetration, such as when you are caught downwind and attempt to make it back by using ½ brakes. Which for some canopies this might be a good idea and for others this is the wrong approach. Using your data, for a FB 200 at the .94 wing loading, you have in free flight (toggles full up) and please help me here if I make a boo boo, FF: 22fps forward speed and 14 fps downward. ½ Brakes: 11 fps forward and 9 fps downward? Let’s say we are at 1000 feet altitude. In the ½ brake configuration this gives us 111 seconds from 1000 feet until we hit the ground? (Straight line, no density altitude stuff, no wind, etc…) Basically 1000 divided by the time 9fps will give us 111 seconds? During this time of 111 seconds we will travel >>> 111seconds times 11fps = 1222 feet. In the full flight configuration: 1000 / 14 = 71.5 seconds 71.5 x 22 fps we will travel 1571 feet. So in effect by using ½ brakes we lose 350 feet? This makes the argument for penetration on this canopy, all other things being equal. Fly fast for distance. Now using another’s data for a different canopy, (astute readers will recognize these numbers.) Full flight: 67 fps forward, 29 fps downward. ½ Brakes: 36 fps forward, 12 fps downward. From 1000 feet you will travel about 689 feet farther in brakes than in full flight! This makes the penetration argument and technique wrong! You clearly fly father in brakes than full flight! So making the statement that to make it back isn’t soo much flying in full flight as it is you should know yor canopie! True or not??? C Thanks again
  8. I read this whole thing,... This is a real blame the victim mentality and is increasing everywhere. This story while very pertinent to skydiving is happening in record numbers every where and anywhere your local ambulance and fire departments are called. It is new and a very dangerous trend in our society. Blame the victim and the population of victims are small and generally defensless, this is the mechanisim that the general public, media, fail to understand and that our Americkian politicos are exploiting! It is a very sad commentary about life in the new Republic. New Yourk in the 40s ' and early 50s' had a number of cases where the police ambulance would show up and if you didn't have any cash, the ambulance would drive away. When this happened to the "right person" (some white children.) the public outcry was large and laws were passed to protect the public from this type of behaivior. Made a lot of noise at the time, not as big as the Triangle Fire, but very big non-the-less. Anytime yo have a minority, that minorities rights and equal treatment have to be defended, SEE John Stewart Mill and his treatis on the subject, for many of yo this was required reading. Frankilin went to france to learn and get ideas on how a sustainable Democracy worked...The French instilled in all of our founding fathers ideas that would ensure the preservation of rights and to limit the power of government to fight tyranny! healt care and the formation of governments had ambulances and fire departments accessable for all as a fundamental idea and was institutited by law during the French revolution! Our founding fathers had this in mind. Now we have minorities, that the public justifies the cost argument, simply because they can get away with it! This is another form of tyranny folks, recognize it for what it is... You might need an ambulance someday, anyone might, this is a mark of what one great past president termed a "measure of a great society..." But many of you heer are a little too comfortable blaming the victim C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  9. Having this attitude: "So be careful out there, and respect what you do." Thanks to the original poster for this! Is what is going to save your ass, not numbers or blaming safety Nazi's. The military is full of rules, using your logic then they should be more or less safe? The point being the rules in the military are embraced and welcomed by all. It's the attitude you hold and how prepared are you to follow the rules? As compared with thrill seeking??? Shit happens fast folks...and the incidents show again and again your experience doesn't matter but your attitude does! C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  10. Defense mechanisims, cognative dissonance, stuff like that... C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  11. The poor bird? C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  12. Ya dickheads that don't want our sport sullied by another do it yourself botch job. From the get go any container manual has what you are looking for, so why do you persist in asking for the obvious, unless of course this was a setup from the get go??? Some questions tell us more about the Paul Harvey side of things than anything else. My points and opinion still stand! C If your question is so simple why did yo ask it in the first place??? But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  13. I wanted to post this , again , so that you would have it: PD Hard Openings. I see also that they changed the bag design again, your picture looked a little like the G3 bag. In the grand scheme of things I think you are ok, but on the other hand I read the manuals that come with the rig like gospel AND FOR THAT REASON anything that differs from the manual gets my attention. AND your bag differs from the pictures in the G4 manual that is currently on the web?????? This is worthy of future explanation by the manufacturer! It is not uncommon for manufacturers to do things like this, although I'm not happy with this practice... I was trying to find pictures from the manufacturer in their manuals to show you,...some of the pictures I found show most bag's completely covering all canopy material. BUT there are more than a few showing a couple of inch's of material peeking thru. With my pack jobs I generally have about 1 and 1/2 inches showing. But I double stow as well. If I single stow, my bag looks very unsound and about 2 to three inches are showing. Perhaps as I already mentioned a call will alleviate your concerns? Keep in mind that it might not appear that you need to double stow, BUT over time, once in the closed container, your pack job might compress even further and thus lessining the exsisting stow force, as the bag gets compressed over time!!!!. I also want to raise what I left out in the eairlier post is that, sometimes, and in a great moon, components get mixed up. I'm somewhat shur this isn't the case, but I'm not absolutely sure in your case. I also ask that you check your rubber bands, sometimes the non-standard size from Keener sneeks into supplys unnoticed. I know there is no specific standard, (there is) but the standard size of 2 x 3/8 x .062 is what most are using these days. There is a smaller standard, and again checking with the manufacturer in case thay made a change? But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  14. Good point! There is this but this is not what you asked for: http://rigginginnovations.com/files/Docuemnts/1/Voodoo%20-%20Section%203%20-%20User%20Information.pdf C My new PD canopy came with a generic manual. Is this the same with the Curve? They use a generic manual? I don't know? Did yo call them? But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  15. I love that vid. On another note, would someone do there job and move this to the "Speakers Corner." It really doesn't belong here... C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  16. This is just sad..... Is Nothing sacred? Mad magazine..... To willingly walk away from the joy and love which is to be had to anyone who asks...is one thing... But to stop this in the name of what???? I'm starting to feel that these atheists are more controlling than the issue they prorport to defend???? Quick: Name the Five Tenants of Islam? Name all ten commandments? Name the Mormon creed and pledge? Etc, etc,.... It's people like Jim Jones that fill themselves with hate and spread misery, Osama, etc,... At least some are trying to have some semblance of morality and decency in the world... Now we have some that want: Sit here and rest your ass on nothing! most likely it was paid for by a donation from Linsay Lohan and Justin Beiber.... the new Gods of the people??? I believe that hospitals should be built, and not for just those that can afford them! I believe that rich nations and explotation do not take the place of hard work. I believe for fresh dinking water for all of humanity. I believe in population control. I do not believe in nothing. Believe me. But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  17. Bernie are you raising the quigly type of argument or suggestion? There is a lot to be said to "just do it" as compared with being prepared to support another to the max. The quigly is a five foot long pipe, submerged in 2 feet of water, which in certain instances we motivate others to go thru upside down, and O'H ya lots of mud! Some can't do it, some can be pushed, some can be lead, and some we are right there to give CPR. If he loves skydiving so much he will find a way, if he is living in his head then at least he has a taste and some stories to tell and the dream might be better than a bad outcome? This is the place where many of us want to give encouragement, but on the other hand were not there and the wealth of information when you see a "gripped" student is missing. This is the kind of thing that gives me nightmares.... Kid learning to jump is a process, not without risk, many downplay the risk and concentrate, like a horse with blinders on only one aspect of this sport. You have to decide It's your life! Asking for advice, as a student with a handful of jumps, wheather its for yo or not is like playing with fire. If you are actually asking permission, then don't jump! If your askin how to overcome fear and doubts, well the same answere should apply... Such is the question you have asked, not so simple HU???
  18. Be careful with these fences people, not all models are the same. There are more than a few Panther 20,000 joule units out there and you don't want to think that is the same as from your local box store. Pee on that thing and your dick will be found ten feet away, still smookin, the next day! C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  19. Lally, P., van Jaarsveld, C. H. M., Potts, H. W. W., & Wardle, J. (2010). How are habits formed: Modelling habit formation in the real world. European Journal of Social Psychology, 40, 998-1009. But I'm sure you know better. Did you actually read that thing? Perhaps habit is the wrong word to use? So this habit according to that research actually started in adolesnce? My point was rather obscure, I'll admit. The problem starts with just one bit of obscure research, that isn't really research and has limited predictive value. This is the problem when quoting research on habits or any thing involved with learning theory. The research you quoted really has nothing to do with recency, primacy, or the last thing you hear...Do you understand trying to model behaivior to fit a particular curve and what all that means? If you want to quote research then perhaps the face validity of tying a string as one novel solution may have a more successful outcome than doeing something and waiting upwards of 90 - 120 days to form a correct habit? Nigel There is some truth to doing something that you will defenatly remember as a learning experience...While I can't condone tying a string to ones balls, the effect of a strong stimulus or increased stress can work wonders. In this case then, the string thing or something that would have great meaning might be more effective. This is why filming oneself can be a great tool! I myself frequently "forget" to fully flare. I like to touch the toggles to my lower thighs at or just before I hit each and every time. Sometimes in high winds I do the girl thing and raise my arms up high. (No disrespect to any female intended, although if you want to point out how words can effect behavior, go ahead.) Anyways I had no idea that I was doing this arm raising thing until I saw the vid. For me seeing that I was in fact doing something that I was convinced I was not was a profound experience. If you have a profound learning experience like this then you will correct the behaivior very quickly. The problem is what is profound to you, this is sort of a learning thing and varies quite a bit! This is one of the best things about a tunnel and a good coach, you can spot this kind of thing in the tunnel and generally there is lots of good vid to be had. Or you could just obsess and have a real scarey dream about a monster line twist in your reserve after the first really scarey bad opening and this might push you enough to fully concentrate on this behavior change you want to make. Do the visualization thing! Visualization can be a powerfull tool to help you! And be POSITIVE. Do not visualize negative outcomes!!!!! And since you mentioned checking for traffic, take a moment and make a few jumps free of traffic or anything else that could distract you so that you can concentrate! C You got this by the way!!!
  20. That's awesome, Spectre's are awesome! C Thanks! But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  21. Under normal circumstances, I would never agree with this guy..... His point is a valad one and there is some truth to this... On the other hand there is no shame in not jumping, this "sport" is not for everyone and some people have yet to learn this. Don't be pushed into circumstances beyond your control cause if every jump is an excruciating mental experience, this mental stress is not a plus! It is a widely held belief that many very experienced people have had very negative outcomes because no-one is immune from locking up, that said, give jumping a chance, at this point in your life, and for as long as you jump you may learn something that can serve yo well in life? I do wish some would enlighten us as to how we can "stop thinking too much." I do see this issue as a big problem that as a community we can do better! C Good Luck! But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  22. Not a bad idea,... Sorry that a few are lost and use hurtful words... C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  23. Copied this from another post, someone suggested it deserved its own space. It has been long suggested that smokers are different and may be stuck in some "earlier" stage in their lives where smoking is associated with social acceptance. This "connection" may be why the addiction is particularly difficult to extinguish until the smoker is able to resolve this stage connection. (Life stages are a popular pysch term used to describe events and personalities. Akin to Erickson / Piage / rogers / et al, etc... They all have phases and stages generally defined by age and maturity.) If you were to say many can't stop smoking until they grow up, this would be the general idea? Got into an interesting conversation with some smokers the other day about second hand smoke. They instantly turned the conversation into something about rights and personall freedom. What I noticed is that when I pointed out that their smoke was causing me to cough, on an airplane no less, somehow this was my problem. I tried to tell them akin to having a bonefire or spreading anthrax, or plain old their actions were like firing a gun into the air without a care in the world where the round landed, thier actions do infact have a consequence that I can not control. That profoundly affect my health. The fact that so many raise the freedom argument and loose sight of the second hand smoke does affect others raised an interesting point inside smokers mentality. And that being: Smokers don't seem to care about other people! The fact that they value their "freedom" over the negative effects of second hand smoke is a very telling phenomenon. It's kind of like some sort of justification for their actions. Charlie manson, when questioned about the Tate murders was heard to say: "I just thought they were rotten people." In other words for Mr. Manson, his freedom and rights were more important than any others life or happyness. While this is an extreem example it does illustrate the held belifes of the smoker that raises the issue of freedom. Smookers belive that they have the right to pass second hand smoke, they justify their actions by saying that the smoke dosen't cause problems, or the smell is the problem of the recipient smellee. Never the less the ability to put yourself in anothers shoes or express any concern for another human being is lost on these people. They just don't care, they are incabable of careing and for the most part they lack empathy and as a consequence for most of us that don't like getting Cancer we are wasting our time speaking with these people! This is why we passed laws, not to limit anothers personal freedom. But to protect ourselves. Something to consideer when dealing with a smoker that starts to point out how their "rights" are more important than the consequences of smoke. They don't give a shit about themselves, why do you expect them to care about others???? Mad C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  24. Not sure this is a good idea for someone who is already having body position problems. Putting both hands behind your back/on your BOC can result in a more head-down attitude, which is not something you want at pull time. Not at pull time , but as a flying exercise, and this is something you can do at a tunnel as well. C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
