I've been a scuba instructor for over 10 years...and one of the first things we look out in students is their reasons to scuba dive. IF they say something like "i need to get over the fear of water, or i need to get over the fear being under water, or getting over the fear of claustrophobia", that is a red flag to either keep an eye out on the student or to really recommend looking for a different sport. In my experience and in my colleagues experience 9/10 times a student who wants "to get over their fear" in scuba ends up not liking the sport or does not pass pool qualifications to go to the next level to qualify for open water. That being said, i know sky diving is not like scuba but to "get over your fear" is not a legitimate reason to skydive. Some fear is ok, it keeps you sharp. But total fear to the point of paralysis and not being able to think clearly or act can put you , your instructor, and others in danger. Ask yourself this, are you willing to put your family, your job, your friends, your life on the line to jump? Are you willing to accept the risks and consequences if something (remote) were to go wrong? +1 Skydiving isn't a required thing...if one has to 'force' himself to do it, why bother? Airtwardo,,,you +1'ed me? Dude man, i'm quite honored. It's not everyday that you award a +1 eventhough i'm the bastard child and jerk of the forums. thanks man, i want to buy you a beer

Hullo fellow skydivers, Has there been a recent or has anyone experienced a bailout? Just wondering, how everyone reacted? was everyone calm or was everyone just running to the door trying to get out? Thanks

You can't be serious right? Were you required to take a packing class to file for a license?

Rodeo with 2 passengers - possible?
GooniesKid replied to Maksimsf's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Can someone rodeo with me?...preferably a prospect, aka: chick. -
Not to sound crass but aren't you a grown man who can sit down with your parents and just tell them in a normal adult conversation? I'm 19 and my parents pay for my college tuition. Im just hoping they don't cut my college tuition if I keep jumping! Oh,,ok. I'd wait on telling them until you finish college OR can find a way to pay for college yourself. That way you are not finacially "tied" to them. I bought a motorcycle with my own funds and when I grinnfully road my new bike to my parents house to tell them they were shocked but what can they do? Tell me to give it back?

training with a new chute/ other newb questions
GooniesKid replied to chemist's topic in Gear and Rigging
Going through AFF use the school's gear. After you are licensed, if you have $6000 - $7000 to burn, then buy whatever gear you want. Other people here on the forums have done it. Heck, even some dude with about 30 -40 jumps ( i know he didn't have 100+ jumps) went and got his own rig. -
AFF Student... Still waiting for jitters to be gone
GooniesKid replied to SFBayArea's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Jitters are part of the fun...it does go away with time. You'll be surprised when one day when you realize "hey, i'm going out of a plane..YOLO" -
Thats typical...it must have been you were subconsciously excited. I still get the jitters too but that's because I rock the tunnels and dont wanna fuck up in front of spectators.

Lol!!! Damn bro. That sucks! But at least you are sticking with the sport right?

Getting my USPA A license. Any Suggestions?
GooniesKid replied to sudeep's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
First, you don't "get" your A license, you earn it. Next, you must, MUST, leave your ego at home. No matter how good a student you think you are, or a bad@$$ outside the DZ life you think you are, you have to be willing to take in all the information and listen to your instructors (who are there to teach you life saving techniques in the sport). Then, you must, MUST, be patient. Yes, it's cool swooping and flying a 40 sqft wing but you have to work your way to it and pay your dues. That goes hand-in-hand with buying new equipment at an early stage (there are posts about this, and the search button is your friend). The search button is your friend. Finally, this sport is elite but with that it is expensive. No matter how you break it down, no matter how people justify cost savings, this sport is expensive. -
Welcome to the forums and glad you were able to come back down safely! The nausea is common for first time jumpers so you'll be ok. HOWEVER, let's get one thing straight. The title of your post is "Hi, new skydiver from Ohio". You are not a skydiver, yet. So don't be posting on your facebook or telling your friends you are a skydiver. At this point of your lustrous skydiving career you are considered a tourist (those who keep the DZ's open for skydivers) :) The road to becoming licensed is exciting but remember it is not a race to become licensed or get the smallest canopy or get the shiniest new gear. You must be patient and dedicated or you'll be another 100 jump wonder or a statistic. Good luck

my first video edit done on my mac, what do you think?
GooniesKid replied to weaverd's topic in Photography and Video
Nice skydives. However, all you really did, bro, was cut a few video clips together and used fade in as transitions for each clip. Nothing special. All that computing power and you don't know what to do with it. And before everyone starts saying "oh, but it's OP first time, give him a break" there are great tutorials on Youtube on how to use Final Cut Pro to it's potential. -
iFly Singapore "Where your female tunnel instructor might just be a dude"!

Wow, so you just finished? where's my beer?

LOL! Is anyone else here thinking, "Darwin's theory will be put to the test on this one". I mean, this has GOT to be the worst idea since the Great Chipmunk Fire of ´79.
