She was 6 and he was 8 years old. Give me a break. This is news? This happens everyday in small town north america... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

Of course this will not stop the Holder justice department from claiming the opposite. And if he gets acquitted in a first trial, they'll bring him up on new charges for another... I have no reason to believe he picked a fight with him. The facts of the case, as reported by the media (which means they should be taken with a grain of salt) seem to indicate that is exactly what happened. However, I wasn't there, and I strongly suspect you weren't either, so neither of us know for certain. I disagree. Some Florida state legislators have also stated that the stand your ground law was not intended to protect from prosecution people who do such things. * * * * * Let's say, for arguments sake, that Zimmerman did start the fight in some manner or another. His conviction of 2nd degree murder or felony manslaughter would be the best thing that could happen for the right to carry lobby. It would provide an example that they could use to show that those who carry and use guns irresponsibly can and do face consequences, so fears that such laws will result in more violence are unfounded. On the other hand, if Zimmerman gets away with it, it's a huge propaganda win for the anti-carry lobby. It will be portrayed as "proof" that a concealed carry license is really just a license to murder. And enough people will believe it that that councilpersons and legislators will have to listen to them. No one will ever know the 'fact' in this case well enuf to suit the other side. This case will not be decided on 'facts' -- it will be decided on 'fear' -- partly the fear of what will happen if Z gets off, to my mind. Personally I believe they will find him guilty of something regardless of his guilt or innocence, in order to make an example of him... And I don't agree with that. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

If I pick a fight with someone (even if I antagonize them into throwing the first punch) who is just minding their own business, and then start getting my ass kicked by that person, do you think I have a right to pull out a gun (that I'm carrying legally) and fatally shoot them without any legal consequences? I have no reason to believe he picked a fight with him. Anyway, yes, if you believe a person should have a legal right to carry a gun for self defense, then I would think he would have the right to defend himself even if he started the fight (or maybe the argument that led to the fight). If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

Just don't make no sense to me. How can it be legal to carry a gun for self-defense, but then illegal to use it? Seems you can't have it both ways. This case really is about removing legal guns from the citizenry. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. that's a tough one do you really want the cops deciding which laws to enforce and which to ignore? I guess I'd agree if the cop sees a murder, and a jaywalk, happening at the exact same time - I'd expect him to go chase the murderer. But if he just sees one or the other, I don't see the point you're making. I guess that would be sort of like, if a cop stopped someone and the person couldn't provide valid id to show he was a legal resident of the states, then the cop MUST detain him and have him deported.... Oh, but isn't that what we just decided was not to be done to illegal aliens? Or did I mishear Obama when he said not to question illegal aliens, and that we wouldn't take steps to deport people who don't have the right to be here. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

I don't keep saying I don't know anything, though. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

We don't know exactly why Zimmerman left his truck, getting himself further into the "situation," or that he did not start the confrontation. It's quite possible that his story is true, but we have no way of knowing. I guess one of the main differences in the two cases is that there is more known about what actually happened in the TX case. Oh, and Z didn't claim that he had LEFT the area; he said he was leaving the area. But the location where TM was shot does not either confirm nor contradict Z's claim. If you keep saying you don't know anything about what happened, why do you keep posting? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Try reading it again. I never said he didn't go out looking for trouble, I said one went out into a known situation VS coming across one. One went out to engage, one went out to investigate. Definitions are important, paying attention to detail is as well. I guess you forgot what you wrote in post #2276, this thread Zimmerman was not on duty as neighborhood watchman, he was simply returning home from somewhere. So he was not actively 'looking for trouble' as you so elequently put it... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. With the current (conflicting) evidence, we have no way of knowing if Martin was "just being followed," or if he was confronted by Zimmerman. Being followed would probably make most people suspicious, and I agree that the proper action would usually be to call the police and let them deal with that person. If Zimmerman had followed that advice (let the police deal with the suspicious person), we probably wouldn't be talking about him right now. Z did not go out of his way to go home and get a gun. He had a permit to carry and he carried much of the time in his neighborhood. No fore-planning there. I have no reason to doubt what Z said about following, losing the guy, and then returning towards his vehicle, then being confronted by TM. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

Some perspective on oil company profits...

Might be a bit more convincing except for the misuse of "you're". Yes, support of education is not a conservative priority. Well, the chances are way better than even that the poster maker "learned" the language from a lib teacher. Actually I'd say it was my parents that taught me to read. I have however been manipulated by teachers before... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Yeah, that's one of the reasons I haven't read it. Though I know a few people who really like that book despite the controversy. This thread made me pull Obama's book off the shelf and re-read the introduction. I'm not going to type the whole thing (maybe it's on Amazon?), but here are a couple of quotes: (This was published in 1995.) "The result is autobiographical, although whenever someone's asked me over the course of these last three years just what the book is about, I've usually avoided such a description. An autobiography promises feats of worthy record, conversations with famous people, a central role in important events. There is none of that here." "Finally, there are the dangers inherent in any autobiographical work: the temptation to color events in ways favorable to the writer . . . selective lapses of memory. Such hazards are only magnified when the writer lacks the wisdom of age . . . I can't say that I've avoided all, or any, of these hazards successfully. Although much of this book is based on contemporaneous journals or the oral histories of my family, the dialogue is necessarily an approximation of what was actually said or relayed to me. For the sake of compression, some of the characters that appear are composites of people I've known, and some events appear out of precise chronology. With the exception of my family and a handful of public figures, the names of most characters have been changed for the sake of their privacy." (emphasis mine) Anyhow, this book had nothing to do with my voting for him or whether I will vote for him again in November. But it appears that he was up front about the composites and such when the book was first published. Not such shocking news of deception after all. James Frey did pretty much exactly what barry did and got raked over the coals for it. If he'd been running for president I guess he would have avoided all that. A composite character can never be a good thing in an autobiography. Incidently I'd argue with barry on what constitutes an autobiography. It doesn't need to be about feats of worthy endeavor, conversations with famous people, or a central role in important events. Possibly some really great autobiographies don't include those things. It does however need to be true. And while events can be colored by the viewpoint of the person living it, the facts cannot be changed in a memoir. Otherwise it's fiction. Barry sold everyone a line. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

Not really. Many authors write memoirs without already being famous. I've read several books from Augusten Burroughs, and they are all memoirs. If you're a good writer and have an interesting story to tell, it makes sense to write about your own life. With Burroughs, he writes about the crazy family he grew up in, and then later about his life as a gay alcoholic. Obama wrote about his own struggles, and also has an interesting story to tell. I read a lot of autobiographical stuff, and I generally assume that the author is going to take some artistic license. I also assume that no one remembers his/her own life exactly as it happened. Seems to me the guy that wrote 'a million little pieces' caught some flack for making stuff up. There's a difference between misremembering stuff and creating composite characters in a book. There's also a difference between a memoir and fiction... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. C'mon And You're not going to toss that old rag out there are you? It makes about as much sense as patching a submarine with stucco! We're talking about ILLEGAL aliens getting a free pass into this country and a sold-out son of a bitch for a president. How convenient that he passes this 'law'... 4-months from an election! Chuck My response was to the OP's Neanderthal use and abuse of the term "True and Sincere Patriotic Americans". Fuck that, on about 5 different levels. As an aside, show me one past or current president (or candidate for same) or member of Congress (ditto) who wasn't/isn't a sold-out son of a bitch, and I'll show you.... well, maybe Gerry Ford, but really nobody else. So please don't get all sanctimonious on us. (That's my job.) john McCain. And your attitude shows that you won't consider any arguments against you anyways... So you're trying to tell me that the majority of illegal aliens in the US are the sons or daughters of us citizens who were just born outside the country and didn't know it.... Oh really? You've been there, you've seen it? Who's witnessed it?? You can't be serious. You mean his record is all made up. It was a big conspiracy... Right. not really. among the white affluent population in seattle, (legal) gun ownership is probably as high as among the less affluent population - and yet as shown, gun violence is way down in that demographic. That shows that there is not really a gun problem among the affluent white population there, relatively. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. He got in trouble because he made a play for a subordinate, in this case PJ, and he got caught. and with ML. How many others did he get away with? Model employer. I just got to ask, who are the people who actually believe that banning guns at council level will actually stop the shootings? What I'm really wondering is, can I get some of what they're smoking? Vaughn isn't admitting it, but he is taking advantage of the recent shooting in the cafeteria at the Eaton Centre, possibly the premier shopping mall in Canada, which wounded 5, killed 2, and was carried out by a gangbanger who WAS UNDER HOUSE ARREST AT THE TIME HE WENT TO THE MALL AND OPENED FIRE. under house arrest for sexual assault, pending trial. I'm guessing he hadn't registered his weapon. The two killed were members of a rival gang, but the 13 year old boy who was shot in the head wasn't. He was just out with his mom and his sister to catch a movie. I imagine Vaughn comes up with these extreme maneuvers rather than have to actually do any work to improve the lives of the taxpayers of toronto... Every incidental fire COULD HAVE BEEN a death(s) or serious injury(s) other than luck of the draw... And every non-fire, other than becoming incapacitated in freefall, COULD HAVE BEEN a NON_INCIDENT, if the person involved had pulled the ripcord himself.
