  1. blue skies, red eyes had somethin to do wit last weekend, I think.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  2. I am sorry to hear that... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  3. the 'world' series was sponsored by the New York 'World' newspaper back in the day -- nothing to do with globalization.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 4. these are just little assholes without a care in the world who want to have fun and don't really care if they break things for others. They probably don't even realize what they're doing may have serious consequences to the people who live and work in these areas. It has dick to do with anything in the British system -- we saw the same thing happen in Vancouver after the Stanley Cup and in Toronto with the G20. and various other cities in North America and around the world. Undisciplined Youth have been a problem since the days of the Egyptian and Roman empires.... They just saw they had an opportunity (the police were a bit overwhelmed by the even the peaceful demonstration) and went with it. Then they were surprised they were getting away with it, and decided to keep on keeping on.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 5. that said nothing about being stopped 12 times in a week. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  6. well, goodie. Why don't you go find it first before proclaiming that it must exist. Good luck. The small business owner doesn't have that sort of free cash to spend on expensive insurance that doesn't even exist. Despite what dreamdancer would tell you, he or she is just trying to eek out a living. In the US, I suppose you could write off the loss on your personal or business tax return. But that doesn't restore your livelihood. Well because there's a market for it. An insurance company offering cover for damages and loses caused by rioting or large scale theft could make a killing by preying off the fears of small business owners, especially after what we've seen recently in England. [insurance salesman]I understand that times are tough, but can you really put a price on peace of mind?[/insurance salesman] Not quite sure what dreamdancer has to do with this. Maybe not, but would I be right in assuming the funds you'd gain from doing that would be enough to rebuild whatever business you owned? ______________________________________________ Most of the businesses trashed during the G20 riots in Toronto last year have not gotten money for the damages they suffered. You're not listening -- insurance companies don't want to pay out for war or riots... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 7. I was a lot lighter back then myself, but that was a pretty hard-landing canopy.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

  9. on a skydive, between 400-500 feet, after cutting away from a stack and doing some rw with one of the other guys in the stack. We didn't plan on being that low, but once we were, we went for it. 11. The doctor at the clinic had said if the anti-inflammatories didn't work I may need a shot of cortisone in the elbow. I'm of mixed emotions on this. The pharmicist said if the drugs didn't work they could up the dosage. I am not sure about doing this either. It isn't really that easy to get into the doctor up here. There's usually a waiting list of at least a few days, unless I just go to a clinic, and I had the impression that for follow-up on this they would prefer I go to my own doctor, who I don't really get along with too well. I don't have insurance for pt or chiro so I had hoped not to need it. The problem is how can you not use your right arm? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 12. and I don't even play tennis. The doc gave me some anti-inflammatories but after about 15 days they didn't seem to be working so I stopped taking them. But now the arm is worse. Unfortunately it's the right arm and I'm right-handed. And I do have some renovations I have to get done. Any suggestions? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 13. I watched the video many times. there was NO attempt to flare! WTH? I wasn't there for this, but I heard some speculation that the TM was a bit distracted by the crowds as he came in for landing. Without seeing the video I am guessing it was indeed a late flare, but that probably isn't an excuse. This is an experienced TM, well over 1000 tandem jumps. 14. The first time I did this I docked with my strato-rock on one my buddies under his convential T-10 gear. What I couldn't believe was once you got close to docking, how fast the closing speed was!. Took me two attempts to get, I think, but man it was so easy, after the first attempt I just did a 360 and bingo, ready to go again. No worries about catching up. Later did some 3-stacks with a round on top and the very rare (in our area round/round stacks under the student gear), but that first round square stack still scares me with it's closing speed.... 15. Sorry to break it to you but Ron is not a cool user name - maybe that is your problem? BTW This thread changed my views. I hadn't appreciated the fact that you guys get people who do stupid things they read on the internet. I used to be mildly irritated when people would knock questions back with "ask your instructors" instead of answering the question. Just one example I can think of -- some guy in the pacific northwest with a few jumps and wanting to be a base-jumper heard about a bridge a little ways out of town that was jumpable. He found himself a baserig, drove out to the WRONG BRIDGE, and jumped off. Result? A body bag. This scenario has happened more than once. A little bit on knowledge can be a dangerous thing. 16. Roger Ramjet's the one to ask. From his post on where are they now? What about you, you've been around long enough that I may have met you. I was the rigger at Z-Hills in 1973-early 74 before going to work for Bill Booth. Worked for him about a year building the first 100+ Wonderhogs, then went with Bill Buchman to IL for the summer to build his rigs. Returned and continued to jump at Z-Hills, Deland, and the Sod Farm (off 301 in Tampa). If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 19. I had a student at the beginning of last season who dislocated his shoulder on his second jump. It was his second jump of the day, on the first he had 'tweaked' his shoulder a bit, but he did some practice pulls and ran thru the routine a couple of times and seemed all right for a second jump. A few seconds after exit, just after we'd both dropped the shoulder grips, his shoulder dislocated and he ended up floating up and flipping on to his back - real quick. Got him on his belly again after the left side instructor dropped off, but never really got back under total control (we had started to spin while he was on his back, and continued after he was flipped onto his stomach, altho' not as fast). In fact when it was time to dump he couldn't with his shoulder, I think he actually reached across with his good arm and pulled the bad arm against his body, ended up going head down, and I had to dump him myself. Of course I had no idea what had happened other than that everything had gone to shit all of a sudden.... Did surprisingly well on canopy control, considering he had to use one arm only to do everything. Afterwards I blamed myself for agreeing to let him do the second jump, even tho' he admitted he'd 'tweaked' the shoulder on the first. But he'd paid for the whole program up front, was a really active guy, and there was sort of a culture of 'get it done real quick' with the pff/aff program (that was the big selling point between it and the traditional program at this dz). I seem to recall that he later admitted he had had problems with the shoulder before, but hadn't thought it would be an issue. I told the dzo and the other pff instructor that he should probably have a doctor;s note if he came back, but I never saw him the rest of the season. 21. I guess maybe I just don't understand this whole 'proxy' data thing. Is that something we think is right in the absence of 'hard' data? Maybe that is the whole crux of the argument.... 22. >"historically rapid pace" >Not at all. When - outside of cataclysms like asteroid impacts - has the climate changed this rapidly in the past? _________________________________________________ Several volcanic eruptions come to mind. Other than that there's a lot we just don't know about the past longer than, 5 or 600 years ago.... How long did it take Greenland to become unbearable to the Vikings? We don't know. We just know they left. I believe you are ASSUMING things when you tell us how fast or slow things changed. We just don't know. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 23. There's a lot of dropzones in the world where you exit over serious obstacles including water, railyards, Interstate highways, and even right beside the Mexico border. _______________________________________________ Those obstacles are all relatively flat -- these turbines (phase 1 was 4 or 5 turbines, depending on model picked) are approaching 500' high and are about 1 mile out upwind, under or behind the spot most days. Someone riding down to 700' before their cypres fires could end up opening right among them. Or someone opening low and getting a two-out situation which is hard to control could easily find himself in that area.... Seems these are no where near the same as getting out over freeways or water. How many of the dropzones located near to these windfarms have them situated under the spot directly upwind? Seems funny that with all the land in the province, one third of the dropzones in Ontario are now being threatened with these industrial wind turbines right next door. Very much because while in Europe the community will gain from erecting wind turbines, here it's the individual farmer hoping to land as many leases as he can on his property.... 25. In smaller type on Page 90 is the fact that clean energy is a big moneymaker for Siemens. The renewable energy division, which consists mostly of the wind power business, recorded a bigger sales increase than any other unit in the quarter ended Sept. 30, rising 48 percent, to 977 million euros ($1.3 billion). New orders rose 85 percent, to 1.45 billion euros, also a company best. _________________________________________________ Of course they're making money, because gov'ts are deciding to spend taxpayers' dollars on it despite the cost. And the poor saps will keep paying, unless they can get rid of gov'ts that spend their money like a drunken sailor for little return....
