  1. I'd use about 4 inches of nice heavy lead. That should shield you against most subatomic particles. Of course, it could be a little uncomfortable to wear 40-50 kilos on your head, but if you really want protection... -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. Thanks. That really expresses my thoughts on the matter. Seems that the problem is that people can't be irresponsible responsibly. You might be onto something here. My home DZ is about an hour away that way. Closer to home, I believe that is the road to the nearest Hooters -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 7. Perhaps it is better to make sure that he will not now, before it is too late? This does not mean war, just enforcing resolutions. Tough call, glad I'm not the one making it. I meant that perhaps there is secret information that implies that NK is not a problem in the regard of dissemination of nukes. I just don't know, I was just voicing it as a possibility. It all seems like a very deep bog. I meant it to be a hypothetical situation. It is not very likely from past performance of the nations involved. Some people may say that we have shown Afghanistan the door, but they did not walk through it. My opinion is leaning towards your view. Where is the promised rebuilding of Kabul? The public probably would not even consider the question of justice being done, they would be far more concerned about the warplane flying over home turf. Still, if (and it's a big if) this coalition invades Baghdad and institutes a democracy there, in 200 years the exact reasons for this may not be important. This is not my opinion. I do not believe that the end justifies the means. But I find this to be an interesting case where the distinction is not black and white, at least to me. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. Almost got killed

My grandmother had a mammogram done today (just routine). She does not speak fluent english, so I accompanied her as a translator. Anyway, we were standing on an intersection making a left turn. I check the oncoming cars, check blindspot, check the perpendicular lanes, check blindspot, check for pedestrians, start to accelerate. All of a sudden a car pops out of the perpendicular lanes, going at least 70km/h, goes past the other cars waiting on the light, dodges me and another guy in front of me turning left, dodges the guy who just turned left before me and keeps going. If grandma hadn't screamed, I wouldn't have slammed on the breaks and my door would have been right where the guys nose was. At the speed he was going, he would have probably killed me. He was male, seemed teenage (I did not get a good look), alone in the car. There are no police or fire stations in that direction. The nearest hospital is where I was taking my grandmother, in the opposite direction from him. It is possible that I do not know something, but I'm at a loss to come up with a good reason for this. I mean, he wasn't even honking his horn or anything. He just went. Can someone explain this to me? I'm no stranger to going 160km/h (100mph, jump speed of a C182) on a 100km/h highway with the windows down, but I always keep my car in complete control. Please people. In skydiving, your mistakes cost you your life. When driving, your mistakes cost you your life, as well as the lives or livelihood of whoever it is you crashed into. I did not deserve to be killed or crippled today. Neither did my WWII survivor grandmother. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 9. Also a fascinating read is The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order by Samuel P. Huntington. Perhaps, but what makes me worried is that he will sell one or two to Al Qaeda or whatever, probably at the drop of a hat. North Korea is, at least, somewhat more isolated from these terror networks and has less of a chance and less of a mechanism to sell something like this. I don't think anyone here is really qualified to judge on this though, not enough info. True. Also, the US is probably a little apprehensive in approaching that entire communist-like region. After the remarkable brutality demonstrated by the North Koreans towards the west (case in point is what Clay said), I'm not surprised. Frankly, if war can be avoided, it should be. Iraq is being given a chance to comply. The pressure may be somewhat unreasonable, but these are UN resolutions. Diplomacy is being given a chance in North Korea first, as well. I'd prefer this course of action over an attack on NK if I was a US citizen. Interesting thought: let's say the west ends up attacking Iraq, removing Hussein from power and establishing some kind of a democracy there, for whatever reason. The oil is now controlled by the vultures. But the Iraqi people are living much better now. Has Justice been served? -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 10. Adding to what Clay said, there are no new UN resolutions (AFAIK) concerning North Korea yet. What the US has done by threatening Iraq could be considered as manipulating the otherwise sluggish UN to action. Iraq would build a nuke to either sell it or use it. North Korea seems to be building a nuke to boost it's own internal morale and as an intimidation technique. If I were Bush I wouldn't start a war with Korea just yet over that. Of course I were Bush I wouldn't start a war at all. But what has happened is looking so much like manipulation now that I'm not sure what to think. On a side note, check out a book by Bob Woodward called Bush at War. I found it an interesting read. It's somewhat apologetic, but very interesting anyway. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 14. I think what was meant was the beginning stage molecules in organic chemistry have a high chance of being created in the tail of a comet. The actual life will have to evolve on a suitable planet. As Gawain so prosaically () pointed out, it doesn't really matter, but these kind of things seem to me to be cult material. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 16. Well, these are all beliefs in reality. God is definitely a belief, so is evolution, and so are aliens (at least at this point in time). Your thoughts seem far fetched to me, but that is just me, who am I to tell you they are wrong? The Raeliens, on the other hand, are a cult. My opinion is that they are taking the concept of belief too far. But you are not advocating their dogma, so you will hear nothing from me there.

  18. Remember the Mars meteor that had traces of bacteria in it? The atmosphere on Mars is similar to Earth but saturated in CO2 I think. Plus, Mars even has canyons that look a lot like dried up river beds, implying water. Or the moon Europa. If a meteor brought life here (I think I read somewhere that organic compounds could form on meteors/comets in flight), could it have "inseminated" Mars and Europa too? That could make a colourful cult. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 20. Does evolution make sense to you? If no, why not? If yes, what about the raelian doctrine makes more sense than evolution? Edited to add: Are you sure that it's a question of it making sense to you? I do admit that it's sort of a grey area, it's not as clear as 2+2, but there are a lot of arguments supporting evolution. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. That's great. I've saved that if you don't mind If you do, just drop me a line and I'll erase it. Here's some of mine.
