  3. In many parts of the world a first aid course is a pre requisite for ratings like DZSO, JM and Instructor. It has to be current, which means a refresher every couple of years or so. You never needed too much advanced stuff, because most injuries were lower leg injuries from landing, and all you had to do was immobilise and treat for shock, the ambulance guys would get pissed off if you tried any advanced stuff like splinting. The other cases were most likely instant death from terminal impact, when medical training was useless anyway. The increase in really severe landing injuries these days where the golden hour is in play means advanced trauma training is a very good idea. 4. Make sure they are thin, and practice your EP's and DRP's on the ground with them on....... I remember seeing a student show up at the plane one cold day (back in the days of 1 1/2 shot capewells) with a pair of welding gauntlets on....I told him to take them off and I'd replace them with boxing gloves because they'd be warmer..... He took me seriously for a couple of seconds, then the penny dropped...... I had a mate in the airforce who used to score proper flying gloves...they were good (and better still they were free, and when worn out he could swap them for new ones). 5. No one seems willing to acknowledge the simple truth. A device built to save lives is now a life taker. The technology has overtaken the ability of users to use it safely on a consistent basis. Just as you can't just jump into an Indycar, F1 car. and we don't think its a good idea to hand out loaded guns at the kindergarten. The canopies are simply too small, and too fast. So what next???.Quote My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  6. Hangover??? Apart from too many after jump beers, this doesn't sound like the normal post jump reaction.Sounds like motion sickness, just unusual to have it hours after the event. Inner ear is where this originates.... As for the breathing, many first timers take a huge breath and then forget to exhale....consequently the common statement: "I couldn't breathe" in freefall. 7. *** Requiring that HP landings be done on a separate low pass into a separate landing area is punishing some of the best skydivers in the sport to "fix" something that isn't their fault(quote] Some people are losing their lives through no fault of their own....I think the concept of "punishment" needs to be kept in perspective. Some people are going to have to swallow some lumps, like it or not. The ongoing carnage shows that whatever systems used to ensure life and limb on out DZs just aren't working. Pocket rocket pilots have proven that generally, these canopies are too hot to handle. Change isn't an option, its a necessity. Enough is enough. 8. About further training at the B and C licence stage. There's an old saying "Its hard to teach an old dog new tricks." This applies very much to skydivers who have reached the "bulletproof" stage, and don't take kindly to advice from someone else. We all know them.... Basic canopy flying skills need to be hammered in at the earliest possible stage, even if at that point, they are not flying HP canopies. Good flying habits are easier to instill because a novice is more receptive to advice. Another point about DZ landing officers....how about a card system like in many sports, where an infraction under canopy results in a yellow card, another earns a red...resulting in grounding. Of course the DZ rules(and sanctioning system) have to be clearly pointed out to everyone, prior to jumping. Infractions can be recorded, and individuals who accumulate a series of cards over time could be identified, and dealt with. (baseball bat behind the hangars perhaps???) Then a blacklist which can go on the internet and be accessed by every DZSO on the planet could be introduced. This might weed out a few idiots, and at least reduce the bad example they set which some low timers decide they want to emulate. In the good old days dickhead skydivers gained a reputation that followed them around, and most switched on people knew to stay away from them. Some of the problems are there, because on big DZ's with lots of action, people can screw up and still remain relatively anonymous, simply due to the sheer volume of jumps done. When nothing actually happens, people quickly forget near misses. Violaters of good practice need to be named and shamed.....knock on effect, is it encourages others to behave. My 2 cents..... 9. Nah ,no pictures, I was cruising around Europe on a motorbike at the time and called into the meet when i saw some parachutes from the road as I was passing...only got there in time for the last two days in time to gatecrash the prizegiving, but met up with the Kiwi guys....Eric, Jim Mclean, Audrey and a few guys I had not met, plus a few Jumpers I'd met at various meets around the world over the years.... Audrey was in fine form as I recall....mostly driving everybody crazy.....as she sometimes did.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  10. Yeah, thats where I last ran into Audrey, Gruyere. She seemed to know a lot of people there. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

  13. Cotty (Kevin Cottrell) went to 25000 in a C185 on a night jump in Palmerston North, back in 1976, to set a NZ night jump record that prolly still stands. Actually got a bit higher than that, but lost a bit of altitude on exit...verified at 25000. Took about an hour to get there as I recall, ZK-CGH had a 260 hp motor at that time. Johnny Plank was the pilot. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

  16. If you are clearing them for FF and then they are not pulling the handle, then you need to look at your own processes for clearing them for FF in the first place. By giving them an AAD on their main you are giving them the message that you don't trust them, and that is not good for their self confidence, which is a very important part of them becoming a competant skydiver. They need to know they can look after themselves. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  17. No...... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  18. If you sniff around a bit I'm sure you will be able to find an old unserviceable round canopy going cheap somewhere. There must be lots of them gathering dust somewhere.... Military surplus stores, gliding clubs, parachute riggers are good places/people to start with. Re rigging an old canopy that has had the lines chopped off just isn't worth the time and effort. 19. Grounding is a stupid sanction to take against a jumper, it just makes them uncurrent and more likely to screw up when and if they return. I used to sentence miscreants to one or more static line jumps as a punishment...gets the point across but keeps them in the air while giving everyone else a chance to point and laugh at them. Experienced jumpers would have to do them from 2 grand on student gear. For an AFF trainee I would make thm do series of hop n pops from low altitude to give them a chance to see what the ground looks like from low level. 20. The thinking was that a cross connecter on a main would result in a broken neck..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  21. No refund policy if weather doesn't co operate seems to equate to theft.... Skydiving used to be run by people with a conscience. Not so much any more..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  22. And relatively easy with a belly wart....simply putting feet together prior to the cutaway usually did the trick..... Notwithstanding all the points about wingloadings, spinning etc, the basic point I was making was quite straightforward. Its not a good idea to sacrifice altitude for stability. That basic rule still holds true. Accidents happen when rules and procedures become ambiguous...... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  23. Easier and more effective to set fire to your money outside your business, and talk to people who come and see what the smoke is about. Survey your existing customers first...ask why they came to you....then target your money depending on their responses. Radio adverts.......money down the drain. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  24. I don´t think you saw me advocate any such thing as landing a damaged canopy, in fact I qualified my specific point about futher damage as being not likely to occur. A canopy will not crumble or disintegrate lke a wet biscuit.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  25. Saw this happen one time, but the hole was burned in the new canopy of a rather large mean looking skydiver. When the roaring started it was hilarious to see all the smokers fleeing for cover..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
