I've heard the "Kaaba" is a meteorite (...or, whatever it's called once it hits the ground). It simply amazes me that so many people pray to a rock, 5 times a day. To think there are folks in the US who actually want to treat them as rational beings. They don't pray to the rock, they pray to God, the rock is a stone in the Kaaba on one of the corners, as they go round the kaaba the pilgrims kiss the stone, just as Catholics may kiss a Cross or a rosery they aren't praying to a cross! Neither do Muslims pray to Mecca. Muslims pray facing Mecca as an act of unity, that all the Muslims at the same time are praying towards Mecca (not to Mecca) at the same time. Nor do Muslims pray to Muhammed, they see him only as a prophet, Gods last prophet. Muslims are monotheistic and pray only to God. Soviet interest for the IRA was in the Official IRA, the 'Stickies' the left wingers, socialists dedicated to not only the removal of the British but to the overthrow of the Dublin govenment and the setting up of a Socialist/Communist government of all Ireland. who later became the INLA, this interest was short lived and not in the form of finance it fell away when the PIRA made a deal not to carry out hostile actions against the Republic in 1969 (when the PIRA took the lead in the fighting). The Soviet Union gave no financial support to the PIRA who have recieved the majority of their operating costs from US citizens whos great, great, grandaddy once farted in County Mayo. dont mistake shame for stupidity. wearing ones heart on a sleeve is stupid. No offence mate but dealing with that shit day in and day out sometimes you just got to let it out or you'll explode. It is easy in everyday life to keep ones emotions in check and be guarded. When you're confronted with a person whos shot up or just sick they don't care what you've just been doing, they don't give a shit whats going on in your head or that you've just had to walk away from a man who nothing more can be done for. Or that you've just held a baby whos burnt to death. All that person wants from you is for you to help them, that means that whatever shit you're going though emotionaly you've got to bury it, deal with it later. You've got to be the same with every patient as you were with the first of the day. When you add the stress and at times fear of it hapening to you into the mix and reduce your sleep to a quarter of what you normaly live on (and what you get is fitful at best) you sometimes don't know where your heart is, you need to let off the presure or you'll just break down. Try doing that day after day night after night, week after week month after month, then take a look down and see where your heart is. Don't give this guy shit, the point is if it is on his sleeve don't take a swipe at it, the fact is this man does have a heart and thats what counts. When looking at Global terrorism we can't just look at Western Europe, as you know its a big world out there. Also just because a terrorist organisation was funded by a country doesn't follow that they were under operational control or constraint. No.........prior to the demise of the Soviet Union/End of the "Cold War" (Hate that term since there was PLENTY of shooting) there was somewhat of a balance. The USSR supported this side and it was met in many places by support from the US and or NATO on the other side. There was some control. Certainly there was terrorism but it was MOST often state sponsored. DIRECTLY! (That one is important) In this new age of the GWOT (Global War on Terrorism) the terrorist are now stateless and PRIVATELY funded through thousands of "charities." This makes things A BIT more difficult. They have no law or order to follow. No one is making rules because WE (As in "civilized western society") are the only ones that are forced to use rules by political pressure. Armed conflict is an extension of politics. When negotiations fail a government or in the case of Islamic Extremists uses force to try and further coerce their foe to do as they wish. We did actually try to use political pressure a time or two to stop Bin Laden. It was a pretty weak attempt though and Clinton made a HERO out of Bin Laden and the Taliban for "Standing Up to the Infidels." What so many fail to understand is this is nothing more than a WORLD WIDE Insurgency. Think most of what happened in the Vietnam war on a GLOBAL scale. This isn't EVER going to go away. There will always be some "Down Trodden" little guy somewhere that feels slighted because he either has suffered due to some perceived wrongdoing (Or actual in some cases) or just the fact that he doesn't have as much money as he thinks he should. (Jealousy) Now bring in religion and the bastardization of it by modern Islamic Extremists. He now has not just a grievance..........but a "CALLING." I don't see an end to this ever. Islamic Extremists are using Islamic "Transnationalism" to incite violence. When someone is willing to give their life in order to kill civilians the only thing a Govt or security force can do is help them do that as quickly as possible while limiting the damage. I think the intel community and Law Enforcement agencies in the US have done an absolutely Amazing job at heading off SO MANY attacks. I'm proud to be part of that. This "WAR" isn't about Iraq or Afghanistan so much as it is about keeping the violence OUT of the West and OUT of mine and your living rooms, malls, schools, and streets. That's my take anyway. Of course, I have been awake for the better part of 2 days right now. Classic American view that nothing exists unless it affects the USA. The IRA was (is) privately funded and for 30 years killed, maimed and blew up stuff in the UK and elsewhere. It was mostly funded by Americans through "charities" which the USA did nothing about. The US did sweet F.A. about terrorism until 9/11. Beat me to it. When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. I've done all those things (many times) including holding the head of her son, so maybe you can try and get a grip? Nothing in your long and understandably emotional response alters the fact that body counts are a poor way to measure the success or failure of a war. As you've asked for scources of the numbers of wounded and killed here you go... http://icasualties.org/oif/ What is it with you US service personnel that think that you're the only ones ever experienced what you're going through? Not so. There was some state sponsored terrorism but by no means was most of it so. Your argument fall here because you seem to lump all Terrorist together as one entity. The groups are as they have always been seperate with limited communication and with various goals, some religios, some national and some regional some just ideological. Until 9/11 Bin Laden was either not well known or seen as a bit player by both the east and the west, even after the Cole. This is nothing more than propergander and is total nonsense. Sorry but thats nonsense. Vietnam was both a ideological nationalist insurgency. What we're seeing here is attacks by different groups for different reasons lumped together by a government desperately trying to sell a reason for Pax Americana. The Neo con wet dream, war without end. That is the legacy of GWB. (& before you start banging on about Clinton, I couldn't care less) Still not sure how much of the 'Jealousy' argument is intelectual lazyness and how much is just ignorance and arrogance.(Not you personaly) At last we agree on something. But who put those hardliners into positions of power in the first place? We did back when we wanted them to fight our proxy wars against the Godless commies. Some are trying to but there isn't yet a global jihad, dispite the Bush governments best efforts to develope one. Which had nothing to do with each other. In which case like I said before the US is loosing the war. Before the so called 'GTW' Islamic terrorists weren't exploding bombs in Europe or blowing themselves up on tube trains. The so called 'GWT' has encouraged and spread and given percieved just cause to the call for a Jihad by people who would never before harbour such ideas. Just the response i'd expect from a brit....and I don't agree with what the IRA has done. but I do support the cause. The 'cause' is much more diverse these days. Do you support FARC in Columbia? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4528109.stm Do you support Hizbollah and Hamaz? The IRA/Sinn Fein do. Gerry Adams is currently on a trip to see his old friends in Hizzbollah and Hammas. Below is a picture of him laying a wreath on the grave of Yasser Arafat. If you're in Belfast these days you'll see Palestinian flags and murals all over the place. You might want to give some thought to this before you state your support for 'The Cause' as they say 'Their cause is our cause'. Also more recently in 1969, London let it be known to Dublin that they were removing all troops from Londonderry for a two day period and that if the Republic were to take londonderry that they would meet no resistance and no attempt to retake it would be made by London. The Republic took one look at the place and did nothing. When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Of course it's not over....and I do understand the situatioin. To call the situation highly complex would be an understatment. Then if you understand the situation Marc you'll know that the Prods of NI don't want to be part of Ireland and are more British than most people living in London. Also you'll know that The Republic of Ireland don't want the six countys back, they are doing very well down there and the last thing they want is for a province full of trouble and poverty to be joining them. You'll also know that the vast majority of Brits would love to be rid of the place and want nothing to do with NI and most of the rest of the Brits couldn't care less one way or the other. The IRA is just a well organised and funded criminal gang. I know of a Senior IRA member who is making £35,000 a week. That money comes from drugs, protection money and the twenty girls he pimps. His situation is not unusual. http://www.victims.org.uk/primeminister.htm When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. Theres no way the IRA (Any strand of) are soldiers, they're terrorists/criminals. They don't wear uniforms, they activly target soft civvy targets with the intention of using terror to gain their objectives. They intimidate, attack and subjegate their own people to ensure their co-operation. They run the drugs, the protection rackets, the prostitution and fuel smuggling. They are terrorists just as the UVF, UFF and others are. There is no 'good guys' in the NI paramillitary world on either side. It really is kill or cure. Theres not many Surgeons would touch him I think. The anaesthetic risk alone is huge and his chances of dyeing on the table considerable.
