  6. Call me Steve. I thought that FliegendeWolf was kind of a cool handle, but I don't really think it describes my personality. I was trying to come up with a name that would let me blend my studies with skydiving somehow. Now, classical music isn't exactly what comes to mind when you think skydiving. So I was thinking, and thinking, and thinking about my favorite composers and pieces, and I remembered Wagner's Der Fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman). I thought it would be cool to be the Flying Michiganisian, but that sounds dumb. Flying Wolverine? Well, that was too long. So shortened, FliegendeWolf had to do. Now, what was I answering? Ah yes, I actually asked my instructors about the 280s they have the other people flying and they said the exact same thing - that I'd be up there all day under one of those (also remember that on my last jump I pulled at 8K!! Imagine how long I'd be under 280 sq. ft. at 8000. If nothing else, I'd get my money's worth on that jump!!). I'm not in much of a hurry to jump anything smaller anyway. I still can't land this one well! I have been poking around the classifieds trying to get an idea what kind of used rig to buy, but that's in the future, too. My goal is to finish AFF this season and to really dive into the sport next summer. That's when I'll (sigh) take out my student loan (Hey, I'm learning to skydive), buy a used rig, and spend my weekends at the DZ. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  7. Hmmm.... Not sure what happened. Unless I've been hallucinating, I was sure that Canuck had responded to a post of mine in the jumper burnt out thread asking me what gear I've been learning on. Perhaps his post was booted from the thread for being off topic. Anyway, I'm about 130 lbs. (without the rig) and I've been jumping a Falcon 235. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  8. Hmmm. I really can't resist adding my $.02 to some of these: TOPIC 3: IS IT POSSIBLE TO URINATE USING THE TECHNIQUE OF LIFTING THE SEAT AND AVOIDING THE FLOOR/WALLS AND NEARBY BATHTUB? Is it possible to check whether the seat is down late at night before sitting on the rim? TOPIC 8: HEALTH WATCH: BRINGING HER FLOWERS IS NOT HARMFUL TO YOUR HEALTH Unless you're allergic to pollen! TOPIC 10: IS IT GENETICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO SIT QUIETLY AS SHE PARALLEL PARKS? Is it genetically impossible to parallel park? TOPIC 11: LEARNING TO LIVE: BASIC DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MOTHER AND WIFE Hmm... I can think of a few women who should enroll in this class themselves. TOPIC 12: HOW TO BE THE IDEAL SHOPPING COMPANION How to shop solo. Gosh, what would life be without its little differences! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  9. Well, you could give me a killer deal on a used rig! I mean, with three jumps behind me, I'm definately ready to downsize to 97sq.ft. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  10. This is one of my Dad's favorite jokes. For his birthday this year, I stumbled upon a tee-shirt that says "Untied Dyslexic Church of Dog." I was pleased with that find. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  12. I made my level II AFF jump the same day one of my professors made her second tandem. She was one of those rare individuals who made her first jump by herself (meaning she did not come with friends to the dz). She had asked a neighbor, who she knew had been skydiving, if he would like to come, and he did not, because his second tandem jump scared him too much. He said he'd never jump again. In other posts, I spoke about my recent AFF level III jump that scared me and made me question my future in this sport. I have decided to go ahead and be a skydiver, but only because I really really suck at bowling. Will we see you in the skies again? Steve A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  13. Weird! I just had one of those last night! I literally hit the ground a moment after the opening shock ended. There was also a part of the dive where everyone was diving through this huge cube like a building frame, but made out of thin pieces of wood. It was very cloudy and dark... 14. Most definately! My ex was a plus size, and I always thought she was beautiful. My current girlfriend is much smaller and I think she's beautiful, too. And I find myself so frustrated and saddened by both of their insecurities about their bodies. Barnhouse is exactly right about the effect of one's personality on their appearance. Why don't you women understand that you are beautiful? Why don't you understand that we are not looking for the models in your stupid magazines? How can a 180 pound woman and a 115 pound woman both think they're fat? And even if they were fat, hypothetically speaking, why do they consider this evidence of their valueless as human beings? How can some stupid number that comes up when you step on a scale determine your worth? And if you're dating us, and we think you're beautiful (no we're not just frickin saying it), why can't you take our word for it? Why can't you be pleased that the one that you're in a relationship with thinks you're beautiful? Is there somebody else that you're trying to impress? Look, I understand that mothers and society and men in your lives may have made you feel guilty about being who you are. And I understand that simply my saying so won't change all that ... especially a mother's opinion. It's just that we want you to feel good about who you are, and we get frustrated that it seems like we can't. Sorry about that. Bottom line: if you are good person, that will show. If you are a crappy person, I don't care what you look like, it won't help me respect you. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  16. LOL! Sounds like he's got you pretty well trained! When my roommate moved in, I began locking my cats in my room with me at night (because that's where the litterpan, food, and water all are). Of course, being nocturnal animals, this is when they were in play mode. So it would be 2 o'clock in the morning and suddenly one cat would chase the other across my face! Spending nights with my girlfriend has solved that problem, except she has a cat who screames his head off in your ear at 6:00 AM to be fed. Can't get away from them, but why would you want to?

  19. Oh, I can so relate to this. I have exactly 6 more days of work after today, and they are all going to SUCK!! I never thought I'd ever like the school year more than the summertime. I hear this, too. See, about a couple of weeks ago, the person I'm temping for came back. I stayed on because I needed the money, but now there's no more work to do! I spend my whole days alternating between surfing at dz.com and trying to spread a half-hour job into a week and a day. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  20. Yeah, the kiss was a sweet touch!
  21. Thanks all for the positive energy! I've decided that I did in fact pass level III in good faith. The maneuvers were easy, and all they were looking for was good body position. I had good body position the whole time, and when the JMs left, I didn't feel it at all! The only issue for me now is something that Quade alluded to the Whuffo post: this was the jump that scared me, that made me realize just what I'm getting into here. Basically, I'm not ready to hop into a plane again just yet. Fortunately, I really wouldn't be able to make it to the dz till the end of the month anyway. I'm sure I'll make my level IV jump, but it will definately be an informed decision from now on! Goodbye Whuffoness!! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  22. Hi everybody, So I made my Level III jump yesterday. The exit was outstanding ... we took less than three seconds to get stable. PRCP was great (no repeat of last jump not being able to find the ripcord!), toe taps were great. When the JMs let go, I didn't even realize it. Made some short circles, heading ... altimeter ... SHIT!!!! 3500 feet?!? CRAP, HOW THE HELL DID THAT HAPPEN?!? Survival instict kicked in, pulled cord. Looked again at altimeter, I was at 8000 feet! I read it backwards, as though the needle would be turning clockwise. I knew where 6000 should be, and the needle was far to the left, so I panicked! Once the canopy opened, I realized my mistake, and the ride down from 8000 was pretty, and long. It's amazing how small the landing area is when you're that high up. Next thing I know, I hear my JM trying to talk to me through the radio, but I couldn't make out a word of it. I took my time descending and made my way back. Once I got into a landing pattern, I could understand my JM finally, took my instructions, and made an ok land. Not on the feet, but much lighter than the last one. I was really shaken up about it while under canopy and still a bit in shock once I was on the ground. They cleared me for level IV, since my TLOs were great, and since the emergency procedure for this jump was comfort, in control, altitude aware keep jumping, I did exactly the right thing by pulling when I did. My JM also gave me the option of repeating level III if I'd like, and I'd only have to pay for the three slots and the rental gear, which was really cool of him. I haven't decided what I'll do, yet. I'll tell you this, and I know it has been mentioned in other posts, this jump was the one I got most nervous about. The first one was fine, the second one had me a little nervous. This time, I was nothing but nerves on the plane. I suspect that this is probably why I had a brain fart and panicked. I asked my JMs and they said this was pretty typical, and at about level IV and V the nervousness begins to wane again, but that sometimes, even after several thousand jumps, she still gets nervous. I'm going to head to the DZ today to start learning how to pack. I hope everyone else has a fun, safe weekend! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  23. I have a feeling that the jumping bug is a lot like most infections ... you never get yourself totally free of the bacteria. It just goes into remission... Then, next thing you know you have another breakout!
  24. Okay, how's this for bitten: I just decided that I'm calling in sick tomorrow, making my Level III, and am going to start learning to pack bright and early Saturday morning. Work sucks. I'm going skydiving. Steve A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  25. Careful, though. You don't want this Swedish chick going back to your girlfriend and telling her that YOU hit on HER. Don't put this past someone who is willing to betray a friend's trust like that. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
