  1. Actually, I was going to comment on the icon when I responded to your post about the skydiving withdrawal shakes, but I forgot. Let's just say it's been one of those mornings. For anybody who has seen Office Space, I have a case of the Mondays, and it's Tuesday!! Anyway, I do like the icon, snowbird. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  11. You might want to talk with your JMs about turns and forward tracking before your Level III jump. But at least the AFF syllabus my drop zone has been following, the turns and forward tracking are done in Level IV. So you'll be doing them very soon. I actually made a turn to the left, a turn to the right, and a three second forward track for my level II. What was your level II? I was hoping that I'd have some time up there to practice it, especially if I have a few thousand feet with nothing else to do (but this does go back to a post I made on an earlier thread about never paying any attention to just experiencing freefall...maybe that would be a good time to do it!). Regarding landing, on the first jump, my JMs forgot to turn my radio on, so I came in at half-brakes and flared far too soon. The PLF was fine, though. My second jump, the JM said "Annnnnddddd, flare." I began the flare when he said "flare," but it occurs to me that he might have meant that I should have begun with the "and" and ended as he said "flare." As you guys point out, I'll need to verify this with him when I talk to him. At any rate, I got dragged on the ground a bit on that one. Nothing serious, though. 13. You were right with the withdrawal shakes! Since you just did it, I have a question. After the JMs let go, are you allowed to practice the turns or the forward motion? The JMs are still nearby, right? I also want to learn to land better. A question to the general community: on average, how long did it take to get the hang of landing to where you could land standing up? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  14. I hear you. I'm working a temp job this summer between terms and I have two and a half weeks left. I really need to get out of here before my brain melts. Now I know why I am going into academia! Three reasons: June, July, and August!
  15. The bad news is that you all get to tell me "I told you so." The good news is that it has nothing to do with downsizing and/or wingloading. I don't think I'm going to be able to wait until August 10 to make my level III. It's been a week and two days since my last jump and I'm getting the shakes. To think of going through two more weeks will KILL ME! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  17. If there weren’t a need for BET there wouldn't be a BET. If African Americans weren't misrepresented and under represented in general media there would be a need for BET I don't think Goose argued that there was no need for BET. He merely pointed out that white americans would look ridiculous if there were are WET. Honestly, is there any way for me to celebrate my whiteness, my maleness, or my straightness without looking either stupid or like a complete asshole? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  18. Truth?! ahh, truth is an illusion. its just one persons' version of bullshit that is the most easily acceptable by the masses! don't put to much faith in TRUTH, unless you like getting kicked in the face by the ignorant! Point taken, but as someone going into academia, it would be very difficult for me to stop believing that there is some truth out there, however elusive ... however paradoxical. And if I stopped believing in truth, I'd have nothing else to believe in! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  20. Quote 4 : 0 : 0 Had to work over the weekend. It rained anyway. I have started a relationship with a school teacher in the area. She is pretty cool and nice to go to dinner with. 21. My brother and I are planning to do some fly-in camping in and around the upper peninsula of Michigan in a few weeks. We are going to spend one night at Beaver Island. 22. This is a great point. Once I was on the ground after my first jump, it occured to me that other than the few moments after exit, and the few moments when I noticed the clouds whizzing by my head, I didn't really pay attention to the freefall. I reminded myself to take it in on the second one, but still was too focused on my maneuvers to pay attention to anything else. I hope that as I jump more, I will learn to be able to take in the whole of what's going on around me ... the scenery, the feel of flying, the freedom... 23. I may be wrong, here, but isn't there a poster in each and every McDonalds (as well as other ff restaurants) with the nutritional breakdown on every food item on the menu? If the poster says that a hamburger contains 2 million grams of fat, I don't see how this guy was "mislead." On the other hand, because I so love playing devil's advocate, I have seen many many commercials which have outright lied about their product, and it has angered me that there is no accountability for truth in advertising. Example, there was one of those Truth anti-smoking ads a few years ago which made the point that whenever a car is proven dangerous, the manufacturer issues a recall on it, and how many recalls on cigarettes have you ever seen? But this is misleading - car manufacturers do not always issue recalls on dangerous cars - they'll only do it if the cost of lawsuits and settlements are more expensive than the recall, and before anybody accuses me of getting all of my information from Fight Club, I have seen this statistic elsewhere. If anybody is interested, I'll post the reference. I don't have it handy right now. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  24. Yes, the dropzone where I made my level I used a throwout pilot, but my new dropzone has decided not to. As I understand it, it's pretty new anyway to have students learn on throwouts. Isn't learning to use a throwout system part of level VIII training? And that you're not even supposed to do that until after you've hop and popped? The reason that the new dropzone still uses ripcords is in the situation where the instructor would need to pull, the ripcord would come free. On the other hand, there is a possibility of a really bad horseshoe malfunction if the pilot chute gets caught on the jumpmaster. But, as you inferred in your posting, you are supposed to check the canopy immediately, and having the ripcord in your hands kind of gets in the way. Especially if you didn't need to worry about it in your first jump. Other than that, I'm very very happy with the new dz. I felt that safety and meticulousness were highly valued, whereas with my level I jump, manifest booked my jm, so that he would tell me a few things, then make a tandem jump, tell me a few more things, make another tandem jump. I think I'll take the ripcord for the sort of attention I got here. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  25. Hawkbit, I did my AFF II last Saturday and can relate a bit. I guess I was happier with my first jump than my second. Maybe I expected too much. Here are the mistakes that I made: Three fine PRCTs. When it came time to pull the ripcord, then, why couldn't I find it?!? Maybe I needed 4 PRCTs... Then, after I pulled the ripcord, I sat and fumbled with my jumpsuit zipper trying to stow the damn thing, and it didn't even occur to me to check my canopy! About twenty seconds later, I realized my mistake, and how badly that could have fucked me up if something had gone wrong. I suppose I would have felt it, though... My first jump used a throwout chute, so I didn't worry about the ripcord that jump. This time, I didn't know what to do with it! (I was afraid I was just going to throw it out, you know?) Hit the ground pretty hard, too. I hope to get the swing of landing soon. All things considered, though, still psyched for level III! Steve A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
