Safety in High-Performance Canopy Piloting
CanuckInUSA replied to conor's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
That's just down right nasty (I'm glad he wasn't messed up). He never got off of the fronts. Is that the same jump (different view of course) that is used in the "Out of the Blue" movie? If not, it's looks almost identical. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
Skydiving is one of the safest risky sports
CanuckInUSA replied to pkasdorf's topic in Safety and Training
At the risk of getting into a heated debate (which I'm not really interested in), I feel differently here (at least based on my rock climbing and skydiving experiences). I have only climbed indoors a few times, so believe it or not most of my rock climbing experience has been outdoors. Trusting your belayer, knowing your gear and your knots, knowing how to setup proper anchors and climbing procedures is a must in rock climbing. And besides having your belayer falling asleep on you, top ropping isn't dangerous and seconding a lead climber isn't bad either. Lead climbing, especially on big walls with multiple pitches does have it's dangers, but besides the weather or an unknown route, the dangers in rock climbing are visible and known up front. The dangers in skydiving can be random and you could do everything right on a skydive and still die. I'm not so sure the same statement can be applied quiet as often in rock climbing. Now free solo rock climbing is a whole different can of worms and so is mountaineering and ice climbing. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -

Safe compared to what? Base jumping? Then yes. Rock climbing? Then no ... Skydiving is not safe ... but it sure can be fun. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
does anyone here jump who at one point said they never would?
CanuckInUSA replied to Newbie's topic in Archive
Good ... then my current fears are normal and healthy? I can't say that I am scared when I jump out of an airplane, but scary thoughts go through my noggin when I think about base. I am still going to try it. I have already talked to Jimmy and Marta and will attend their FJC once I have my packing down, but base is scary ... If you compare skydiving to base or free solo rock climbing, then yes it is safe. But do not fool yourself. Skydiving is NOT a safe sport. But it sure can be fun. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

High: Being given the opportunity to spend time with a special friend. Low: Not knowing when/if I will see this special friend again. I just dropped a good friend off at the airport as she is now on her way to Eloy (again). Treat her well MonkeyLip (and all you other Skydive Arizona people). LOL ... Sometimes. But I'll sneak a bite from that rat I trapped, cooked and hide under my shirt, when she's not looking. But otherwise, yes the bird food has been interesting. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

LOL ... She and I stayed up late last night talking after we got home from Utah and if you can believe it, she's likely still asleep on my living room floor (I'll be going home at lunch to wake her up and eat something with her). Also, I'll be dropping her off at the bus station later tonight as she's on her way back to AZ from CO for a little while before she returns to the UK. This is by means NOT and advertisement as I have no personal financial interest in the DZ. But I just wanted to pass the word along to you all of what a friendly new DZ Clint is trying to make for us in Moab UT. It may be small right now, but if enough of us can spread the word and visit the DZ when we're in the area, then things will only get better. Thanks for all your hard work on Saturday Clint, from Steve, Winnie and Matt. Yes Matt, the nasty person who lost your frap hat when he opened the Cessna door (he feels bad about it). I know what you mean in terms of matching canopies in a 2nd rig. But I'm not planning on doing the same sort of jumps (for the most part) with these two rigs. My primary rig will be for freeflying, tracking and swooping and this second rig will be mainly a wingsuit rig (with it occasionally used when I want to do back to backs). Anyway, I'm thinking of having two completely different mindsets for the two rigs. One is for swooping and one is for accuracy. But I digress ... I'm thinking of putting together a 2nd rig which I will somewhat dedicate towards wingsuit flights. But I do find myself in some sort of strange discom-bob-ulated circumstance in which I will be selling my current container (capable of flying a 170 main and 193 reserve) to buy a new primary rig (and my current container would be a great wingsuit rig but a friend really wants/needs it more than me). Now I have a line on a used Javelin which appears to be coming on the market soon, is priced well, fits my body and appears to be in good shape. But I'm looking at needing to use a smaller main and a smaller reserve canopy. Anyway, I was originally thinking of putting a Sabre2 150 or Saffire2 149 in it if I buy it. But then it dawn on me, why not put a Spectre 150 in it (loaded at a few hairs above 1.4:1) and get used to flying a smallish 7-celled canopy (similar to my wing loading on these new smaller reserves I find myself soon to fly). This Javelin won't be my swooping container (especially jumping wingsuits) so why not practice accuracy with the Spectre and Swooping with my Crossfire2. So here's the question: I can't for the life of me think why a Spectre wouldn't be a good canopy for wingsuit flights. But maybe there's some reason unknown to myself why a Spectre is not good flying a wingsuit loaded a few hairs above 1.4:1? Nah say it ain't so ... Back in the early 80s, I got to see Stevie Ray Vaughn play like in a small venue (a bar in downtown Montreal). It ranks up there as one of my top five shows I have seen (competing against likes of Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, U2, Santana, Zappa, etc, etc, etc). One would only imagine the music he would have produced had he not died. Even though he likely wasn't a skydiver, Blue Skies Stevie Ray ... Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Is the Sabre an original Sabre or a Sabre2? The biggest difference you will notice between these two canopies is that the 9-cell Sabre will have a flatter glide than the 7-cell Spectre. It's not an easy choice as both the Spectre and Sabre (especially the Sabre2) are good canopies to learn on. You may also want to consider pack volume (leaning towards the smaller Spectre canopy if the container is sized for a 210, or the Sabre if the container is sized for a 230). What makes you a freeflyer?
CanuckInUSA replied to dgskydive's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
To be a complete freeflier, one would assume that you must be able to fly in all dimensions. But if someone is doing a sit jump, I'd still classify it as a freefly jump. Of course what do I know? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -

Once again thanks for the info and your point concerning the secondary inlets are good concerning costs. Sometime down the road, I can see their benefits for the jumping I may do in Moab. But I am nowhere near ready to be jumping there and I did sort of tell myself that I wasn't really interested in doing low jumps (right now I'm thinking low is -
I love my Crossfire2. But I think the direction that this thread has been taking is that the Saffire is very much a swoopable canopy. I have one jump on the original Saffire 149 and I liked and swooped it very well for my experience level at the time. You don't need an elliptical canopy to swoop. Okay back to your regular scheduled programming. I love my Crossfire2. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

how many jumps did you make in 03
CanuckInUSA replied to jdthomas's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'd have to look at my logbook to tell you exactly how many I made. But it was somewhere around 420 skydives (and I'm only a weekend warrior). I'd be surprised if I make another 400 in 2004 (300 is definitely likely). By the way, 200 is a good skydiving year in my limited experience. Hey I saw on Blinc's classified ads that you were trying to sell a BlackJack 280, but that you would only sell it to qualified buyers? Correct me if I am wrong, but the BlackJack uses ZP fabric as it's top skin (so it could be harder for a newbie to pack). But is there another reason why the BlackJack wouldn't be suitable for someone like myself? Does it have the multiple bridle attachment points, or is there some other reason which I'm not aware of.
