What not to do (how the Aggie almost died)
beemertec replied to AggieDave's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Keep in mind I am very new to this sport. The ink is still wet on my A-license. My thinking behind it is if, for whatever reason ( I know it should never happen) my hand slipped from my reserve handle, below 1000 ft I may not not have time to grab the handle again and deploy in time to land safely. I would think even a few hundred feet may make a difference. If I were below 1000 ft. I would do as I have seen recommended on these forums and deploy my reserve to get as much fabric over my head as possible then cutaway. Makes sense to me, anyway. If I am wrong let me know. I know there is a lot of difference in opinion even among experienced skydivers, and I like to hear all sides. What not to do (how the Aggie almost died)
beemertec replied to AggieDave's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was taught to have my decision made by no lower than 2000 feet, and to be under the canopy I intend to land by 1000 feet minimum. I have an RSL so I would cutaway as low as 1000 feet. If I were flying without one, I think I would want to be higher, just in case. Blue Skies Steve Ok, so it's pink, but I'm secure in my manhood, and I still look cool coming in under it! -
Don't jump a canopy you are not ready for because of peer pressure. I jump an Aeroglide 160 and I figure that canopy will be fun for at least 100 to 200 jumps. Even a larger rectangular canopy can be swooped if you know what you are doing. I accidently swooped mine about 35-40 feet one time. Of course when everyone talked about it, I acted like I did it on purpose, right up until my DZO said "Man you sure are lucky you caught that gust of wind or you would have busted your butt on that landing". I do play with my risers at altitude, just so I know what they will do, but as for hook turns and swooping, I'll leave that to the very experienced jumpers, besides who says you have to swoop to have fun skydiving. More jumps. Hey, that may be worth it. Blue Skies Steve Ok, so it's pink, but I'm secure in my manhood, and I still look cool coming in under it!

Damnit man, you are gonna have more jumps than me by the end of the month. Where do you get all that money. Does your wife know how much this really costs. I'm gonna tell her. Seriously, Congratulations. I can't wait till we do night jumps this summer. See ya this weekend. BTW, Did you tell everyone about your new rig? Come on Alan, you're supposed to get excited about this stuff. Blue Skies Steve Ok, so it's pink, but I'm secure in my manhood, and I still look cool coming in under it!

Just my humble newbie opinion here, but Just listen to your instructors. I think I would rather cutaway and go to reserve if in doubt. Seems safer than possibly delaying too long trying to figure out what is going on. I was taught deploy, count 3 seconds, and look up. I generally look up when I feel my body swinging to vertical, because I was told I could induce a spin trying to look over my shoulder when I deployed. As for a long delay on opening, I had one last fall. Deployed at 4500 (new canopy to me and I wanted to play around). I counted to three and was still dropping fast but I was sitting in the harness so I thought that was what people meant when they said they packed for a long snivel. 3 more seconds go by and I looked up and saw a ball of crap. I reached for my handles and looked up so I could watch the cutaway (might not be a good idea, but I wanted to see it), and the canopy opened. I had line twists, but the canopy was flying straight. I had 6 or 7 full line twists, but I still had altitude so I kicked out of them. I had teh canopy landable by 2000 feet, and the landing was uneventful. When I got to the ground I asked everyone what they thought the problem may have been. They all said sometimes stuff happens. I thought I should have been scared, but it was actually invigorating. It felt good to know that I would not panic when a problem occurs. With my limited experience maybe I should have gone for the handles, but I wanted to fix the problem. The most important thing was I never lost altitude awareness, and had I not been able to land that canopy when I hit 2000 feet it would have been gone. Oh, and this is just a plug for not downsizing too fast. I was under a big and slow enough canopy for my skill level that I had time to correct the problem. Had I been under a smaller faster canopy I probably would have had to cutaway. That's not related to this thread but I think it is stiil important to note. Damn, I'm long winded today. I agree with you. I jumped a 280 on my AFF 1, and by jump 12 I was jumping a 200. Around jump 20 I went from the F-111 220 (which I had been landing accurately) to a ZP Aeroglide 160. When I bought the rig with this canopy, I was also able to pick up a Hornet 135, brand new to my specs super cheap. ( A fellow jumper from South Africa got it for me.) I had a few people telling me I could probably jump my 135 after 30 or 40 jumps on the 160. I am about 170 out the door. I figure that canopy will stay in the bag for 100 plus jumps. Like my DZO said, why rush it. The 135 is safe in my closet. Although I want to jump my new canopy because it looks cool, and matches my jumpsuit, I am not willing to risk the hazrds associated with downsizing that fast. After 15 jumps on the 160, I am still nervous with the speed of that canopy when landing. In all honesty I should have waited to jump the 160. I was all over the landing area for the first 10 jumps with it, and falring high, then low. I guess angels have been watching over me. The last few jumps have been within 10m of my target, but that is as close as I have been. Bottom line, take your time downsizing. I may be a newbie to this sport, but I have already learned that much. Blue Skies Steve Ok, so it's pink, but I'm secure in my manhood, and I still look cool coming in under it!

It tokk me a while to figure it out, but I noticed the amount of SPAM I get increased everytime I clicked on remove me from your mailing list in an e-mail. Not only did I continue getting spam from whoever I sent the request to, but I got more. I figure the remove me tactic is just a way to put my e-mail address on more lists. Wow looks like the same jump, different plane flying the opposite way. Hope the planes didn't collide. Blue Skies Steve Ok, so it's pink, but I'm secure in my manhood, and I still look cool coming in under it!

Student Rigs...how long do people normally use them?
beemertec replied to andy2's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That is nice. I bought my own rig as soon as I graduated AFF (Got a great deal). -
Just out of curiosity, where on the bottom ring was the RSL when you tested it. I may be wrong but I would think in the air the middle ring would be more likely to bind because the RSL may ride higher on the bottom ring due to air pushing up on it in freefall or having it move when deploying the main. I do not claim to have a clue what I am talking about, but I was just wondering if you thought this would make matters worse. Question to manufactures (Dan, George, others ???)
beemertec replied to Vlad's topic in Gear and Rigging
I've got to agree with Kelly on this one. I do not know of manufacturers in any industry giving you the cons to their products (except for the drug industry, and they are just covering their ass). If you go to buy a car, how many salespeople tell you the cons of their make and model? When is the last time a Mcdonalds commercial explained how much fat and cholesterol is in their food? As long as manufacturers do not lie about their product I do not see a problem. I do agree with you on that point. Manufacturers need to sell on their strong points and not on the competitions weak points. If a salesperson tries to sell me anything by badmouthing someone else I just walk away, because I figure thay are only doing that because they can not come up with anything good to say about their own product so they have to bash someone elses. $50.00 jump seems like a lot. Was that just for the rig or did that include your jumpticket, altimeter, jumpsuit, and packing? Blue Skies Steve Ok, so it's pink, but I'm secure in my manhood, and I still look cool coming in under it! -
Visit some of the the DZ's near you. You can find a list here on dropzone.com. Find one you are comfortable with and make a jump. Be sure to hang around after the jumping is done, and get to know the folks at the DZ. Blue Skies Steve Ok, so it's pink, but I'm secure in my manhood, and I still look cool coming in under it!

1. Somebody's got to do it. 2. Good practice for inflight emergencies. 3. It's fun. 4. It beats getting ribbed by everyone on the ground for riding the plane back down. 5. It' cool. 6. Chicks dig it. 7. The door is open. 8. If you don't a perfectly good rig goes to waste. 9. It will change your life. 10. Did I mention it's fun. Welcome! I did AFF, and I loved it, but I understand that static line is a lot less expensive, and you do get more time under canopy in S/L training. Blue Skies Steve Ok, so it's pink, but I'm secure in my manhood, and I still look cool coming in under it!

Well, I can't explain what I feel when I skydive( it is such an odd combunation of emotions), so I just tell them nothing else makes me feel like I feel when I skydive. Not only that, but I have never met another group of people that I connect with so well. Blue Skies Steve Ok, so it's pink, but I'm secure in my manhood, and I still look cool coming in under it!
