Yeah, he prefaces (in an obvious voiceover) that the horses might have gotten free from somewhere. Yes, there are a few cheese-dick things he does. He parachutes into a few places and always has very dramatic landings. The problem I have is that he says "This is what it takes to survive in the wild." And being someone who goes camping a minimum of three times a week and knows how many people are misled by his antics, I have a big problem with it. Especially when he recommends swimming down a 40 degree river with many rapids just because it's faster. I practically live on the Potomac River and I've seen bodies pulled out before. If he was straightforward about and put it in the context of an adventure hike then I'd be a big fan. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

I was doing on search on Man vs. Wild to see if there's a common understanding that most of what he professes is absolute bullshit if not dangerous. The first hit was Lewmonst berating the program on discovery.com. Lew Hates Bear And now for the question portion of this, does everyone realize that the dumbest thing to do when lost in the wilderness is to jump into a river with 40 degree water and whitewater rapids? Hey Brother, don't fool yourself into thinking that this decision makes your world safer. Other than that, I don't get why everyone is giving you grief. You've set a standard for a DZ and this one fails the test. But I'm looking forward to the next time I'm at Eloy. It's a fun DZ and to me it's as safe as any other. Yeah, but frogmen tend to float to the surface when they're bleeding from their ears and lungs. Makes for easy pickings. So, it's not the shrapnel you're going for. Here's a nice little toy: Concussion Grenade "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

You're asking a very unreliable pool of people on advice on equipment they've never need. Find out the new cost of the container and then find out how much it's been jumped and the rig's condition. Once you know this you could probably ask a gear shop for some advice. And provide a little courtesy and buy something from them at the same time. I am of the opinion that because Family Guy has a Spin-Off, it has jumped the shark. It's still a solid show within itself but the spin-off has diluted it. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Connecting Your Camera Suit Wing to the Hip Ring with metal clips
DJL replied to DJL's topic in Photography and Video
I thought of this because a while back a gear manufacturer posted a notice for people to not tie their shirts to the hip rings because it was causing wear. In the meantime, the harness manufacturer said they wouldn't comment on it. Basically it sounds like it hasn't caused any problems in the past but the intelligent user should keep their eye on it. Personally, I'd see about a cloth connection to the hip ring like is used for demo flags. I tend to misuse things, so I'm just the kind of person who would nick the clasp and start doing damage to my webbing. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher -
Connecting Your Camera Suit Wing to the Hip Ring with metal clips
DJL replied to DJL's topic in Photography and Video
This weekened a jumper at my DZ showed up with his new camera suit and put it on with his gear to show everyone. He had connected the wing with a metal clip to his hip ring. I immediatly saw a few problems with that (Direct wear on the webbing, Denting and Burs on the hip ring) and let him know. The manufacturer of the suit had told him to connect it like that and had not made any provision for it to be connected elsewhere, either by directing him to have a rigger sew a cloth connection to the hip ring or to provide a point on the suit to connect the wings. Has anyone ever been advised to do this? Am I correct in that warning him. By the way he agrees and is following up with the harness manufacturer and the camera suit manufacturer. I don't think there's any point in saying who made the suit since he may have just misinterpreted their directions - I won't be another dz.com gear basher without the full story. I await his report. It's a sad truth that it goes in cycles, especially at the beginning of the year. I was even logging on to dz.com and thinking, "It's about time for people to start dying again." I wasn't surprised to see several new entries to the Incidents Forum. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

I'm not sure what we're up to either and I know that at least Buz is going to be pretty tied up with the WR. I might be happy to at least train with you guys a bit to keep the edge on if we're not doing anything this year. I was still only going to shoot vid. After jumping all of last season with my Lightning I finally took my Tri-Hybrid for a rotations jump and found it to react more quickly (accurately) to input. Instead of that ridiculous lag you have to account for with a Lightning it's just a shuffle with the rears and then slam the front risers. I'd be interested in trying a CRW-Comp Tri.
