Cable modem and life is good. I've been stuck on Dial up for a few weeks. Now I'm gellin' on DZ.com, cable connection, on my XPS, 19" flat screen, and watching Digital cable. The only thing that makes this better is that I'm off work until next week and heading to Couch Freaks tomorrow... Ken "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken

The Vengeance is dogsled P.O.S. Switch over to a Samurai or Jedei. Trae's opinions on airlocks are only true for the Vengeance and not airlocks in general. Of course "the Katana is better". PD held it up in design and testing to be "the canopy" for Stilletto pilots who are looking for something more but not into the crossbraced performance level. Sometime I'd like to see a Samurai vs. Katana swoop competition. Unfortunately all the swoopers I know either jump a crossbraced or a Samurai. Ken "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken

Jumping while chewing gum = bad idea, right?
Samurai136 replied to Jeth's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Over reacting. I know skydivers who have been in the sport more than 33 years and chew gum in freefall. Personally, I don't chew gum. It makes me more physically tense; I like being totally relaxed and prepared to skydive. Ken "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken -
Both are free fly friendly. Of the two containers, I consider the Javelin to be more rigger friendly.

Ecco Receptor series $100. The pair I have have lasted me two years this far. Tread is still in great shape and I wear them every day (work) and when skydiving and swooping. Ken "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken

Inboard / Outboard line stow D-bags? (Vector/Samurai)
Samurai136 replied to klafollette's topic in Gear and Rigging
I had about 600 jumps when I packed myself a bag-lock (and first save) with in-board line stows. I think symetric orderly packing of the canopy and a stable deployment contributes more to on-heading opening, without line twists, than in-board vs. outboard stows. There end up being more stows closer together with in-board stows which means there is more to check and more possible bag lock combinations. It only takes one line out of place to cause a bag-lock and it's harder to check them. Placement of the D-bag could disturb a line from one stow and loop it around a neighboring stow and you wouldn't know it since they are hidden in the bottom of the container. Out-board stows are easier to inspect and control the placement in the container which is where the bag-lock happens. The malfuction is easy enough to deal with but having done it once I felt it was a preventable malfunction by returning to out-board stows. Ken "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken -

Very good movie but I was a little confused about the length of the final battle scene. When it started it was Autumn in the medow and by the end the seasons had changed to a Winter blizzard and 1' of snow. Why? Maybe because blood looks better on snow? Ken "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken

If I was inspecting it for a buyer I would point it out as a sign of wear possibly lowering the resale value of the parachute. The question is do you want a tiny hole that hasn't changed in 20 plus jumps or something like a 1" patch? Ken "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken

about 12 hours freefall time and 5 hours in the windtunnel.

Bottom wall of reserve container on Javelin
Samurai136 replied to alexey's topic in Gear and Rigging
Sunpath has a recommended length for the reserve closing loop. It is up to the rigger to adjust that length for a properly closed container. In addition, the pilot-chute is the same size no matter what size container/reserve is being packed. Sunpath uses a molar bag which takes a final shape that is very different from a "wedged" triangle. The material ends up placed mostly to the bottom and the right/left ears of the container. Since there is never any parachute material directly under the base of the reserve PC spring the reserve loop length will tend to stay the same length because the PC is the same size on every container. Probably more than a handful in the NPSL. We did build that 60-way at Couchfreaks last year. I think between Bill, and myself we could come up with at least 15-25 skydivers that would travel to SDC for a 100-way. Ken "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken

How elliptical must it be to be elliptical?
Samurai136 replied to tdog's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
The degree of tapering is not the single defining characteristic of how a canopy will fly. The Sabre and Diablo respectively have more leading or trailing edge taper than a Velocity. 'Elliptical' is a relative term to sell parachutes. Tapering is one of many characteristics in a canopy's design. Every design is unique and uses different amounts of tapering for different purposes. If you each spent $900 on the tunnel with a coach that would work out to about 90 minutes a piece of flying time (90 skydives). If you then shared your time with each other, piece partners flying together, after 30 minutes of solo training you could come out of a team camp with 2.5 hours of flying time or more! So for the cost of 45 jumps you could get 150 jumps worth of training and experience. Ken "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken

How elliptical must it be to be elliptical?
Samurai136 replied to tdog's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Ask Scott Miller about elliptical. Elliptical is a sales/ marketing term. Scott will tell you that no parachute is elliptical. Draw an ellipse and compare it to the canopy planform. They are not the same. What the marketing guys are refering to by elliptical is the taper of the canopy. No parachute is tapered in the same way. Look at two "semi-elliptical" parachutes or "fully-elliptical" parachutes, their tapering will not be the same. Designers use different amounts of tapering specific to each design. From a certain point of view a Sabre or Diablo is more tapered than a Xaos or Velocity. It's all relative. Ken "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken -

They are valid design modifications which function as claimed. I have a standard Sam 120 and a Signature Series 120, standard line set. I love them both. I wouldn't say the mods are specifically for 'swooper types' necessarily. But they do contribute to longer swoops if that in what your interested in. Ken "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken
