Are you saying that the US military has never broken any of the rules of war or international law during the conflict in Iraq? I'm not condoning any of it, i think it's repulsive. I think EVERYONE should have to do that... to get citizenship....serve 2 years.. then you have the right to vote. More people would be invested in doing something for their country. Great idea. Hmm, i first read about that concept in Robert H Heinlein's book Starship Troopers, the only science fiction novel on the reading list at all four United States military academies. In the book, to become voting citizens and to be eligible to be a politician, a person have to volunteer to serve in the military. But people serving in the military don't get to vote so they can't vote out of a war. It's a pretty good book, not just a science fiction novel, but a political essay as well. Belive me, i know, I'm Mayaysian and grew up in Singapore.Singapore or Malaysia isn't the issue here, i was just saying that my experience with the muslim community is from there. I was just saying that if you are born into a religion, that in some places you can be killed for rejecting it, what choices do you have? This reminded me of an incident i read in the newspapers when i was in Singapore over summer one, maybe two years ago, except that it's real. A bunch of teenagers were swimming in a reservoir in a park, all allowed by the authorities. One of the teenagers got into trouble, so his friends stopped people on a nearby path asking to borrowing a mobile phone to call for help. Everyone either looked away and ignored them, or said that they don't want to get involved, and the kid drowned. Another more personal experience was when i was in boarding school, and a female friend of mine was stalked and harassed by this guy. The girl, a few friends and I were in a music room when he tried to force his way into the room, sweeping back and forth with a leatherman in the gap under the door. Everything ended fine, walked the girls back to their dorm where he couldn't enter, then i went to a friend (friends of the girl as well), and told him about it. First thing that came out of his mouth is "I don't want to be involved".. Not "what can we do", or "is she all right"... I've never been more disgusted with someone in my life. You have a very good point about the difference between Christian and changing faith fron Islam. But how about the people who didn't get a choice? I don't know about Afganistan, but in Malaysia and Singapore, if your parents are Muslim, you are born Muslim, so you don't have a cholce. Also, people who marry into a Muslim family has to convert to Islam. You can reject Islam, but in Malaysia and Singapore i don't think you get killed for it.
