If I'm looking out the windows, I'll know. Unless it's a DZ with limited outs, I'd probably go anyway and worry about it later. I have left an 8 or 10 way early when I saw we were off. I usually point down and wave before leaving in the rare instances that this happens, certainly not with the Diverdriver and his baseball cap at the wheel. Let me add to what Chris has said. As much as possible, if you're used to the DZ, you should be aware of the general pattern being flown and the general direction of travel, so that you will sort of know in advance the line along which you will expect to find the airport. At Sebastian, many times they will loop around over the ocean to the north and then end up coming from the north or the east on jump run. Even if they don't, the ocean's a good landmark (seamark?) and the pilot's pretty predictable. I find it helps limit hesitation if I know the direction from which I am coming (pre-spot, of course). I can remember being daunted when we were almost over I-95 on jump run, but then, the winds were high out of the west and we made it back easily. Having said the above, if you have time, try to note where you exited and where you end up later in the jump. I can remember one day where on the last jump our free-fall drift was much less than on prior jumps with the same spot, so we pulled a bit higher (last ones out made this an option). The winds at various altitudes had dropped off and we needed more canopy time to get back. I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. Quade's just trying to get you to jump at his place. Seriously, though, if I am at Perris first thing in the morning and it's not hazy, the first jump is often a free-fly solo jump just to look at the mountains. From the Little San Bernardino range (beyond Palm Springs), San Jacinto, and San Gorgonio to the foothills towards Riverside and Los Angeles, it's a million dollar view (for a lot less). This thread has touched me. I think by now you may have read what everyone has written. Quite a few reacted emotionally because it touched a raw nerve, which is what you should expect. However, there were a bunch of posts where people also took the time to offer help and advice. These selfless acts go to the quality of the people in our sport, before you count anyone outside of it that cares about you. That should get you thinking about how regretable it would be to give up such gifts of friendship, rather than trying to deal with what is troubling you so you would still have the blessings of others who care. How cold is too cold for you

It will be in the 20s to near 30 here this weekend. It's been 2 whole weeks since I jumped at Sebastian, Florida, so I feel compelled to jump if skies and winds are OK. Howevah, I should say that these forecasted temps are about at the bottom of my lower limit. It is possible that the professor (aka, Kallend) may decide to show, as he has in the past in these conditions (or was it at least 35 degrees?). As much as I hate to say it, I always notice someone at every dropzone I visit (a few a year) who does not appear to be watching. Since I often wear a full-face helmet, yelling does no good, and they might not hear anyway (if they can you are probably much too close). Just dodge them to make sure your patterns diverge. If it is possible for you to notice someone about to overtake you AS WELL AS those below, so much the better. Right-of-way is small consolation in the event of an accident. Actually, there was an incident recently at a Florida DZ, I believe. A novice skydiver got behind the wind on a spotting problem and, rather than attempting to use another field, tried to make it back. The winds were at least 15-20mph. Jumper landed on the hangar and then fell off, as the canopy partially re-inflated and swung him/her around beneath it. Had some serious injuries as landed on the tarmac in front of the hangar. I agree, although we get away with it pretty handily when we jump the fast otters up to 16k. We're there and out the door practically in no time. I have jumped at Zhills and other places, both as a R/W and free flyer, and also have not had problems with separation. One thing I think most of us can agree with is that jumpers should have an idea of the winds at altitiudeS, ground speed if possible, and watch how fast the group ahead slides away horizontally. Another thing is, if ground speed is higher BE IN THE DOOR AND READY TO EXIT when safe to do so. Although I have probably been a guilty party at certain times, I have seen people dink around before and during the exit (you can't dink around afterwards: gravity takes care of that) when it wasn't necessary, as the seconds tick beyond a reasonable separation interval. A lot of the time we can minimize the need for another pass. Avoid putting anyone in the position of wanting to pull higher due to the spot, but being afraid to because of groups that exited afterwards! I try to jump just about every weekend of the year, except for the odd whuffo vacation to Nantucket Island, Mass., although I have been emailing people at Lawndart's drop zone about bailing out there as well. Deep brakes for me is just above the stall point, as you say. I am 165lbs plus a Stiletto 135, J1, and PD143 out the door (loading is about 1.4). It works on long spots for me, if I allowed it to happen in the first place (don't blame the pilot automatically). I just figured that if someone was measuring it might be interesting to know. As a practical matter, if I'm down to this level of tolerance, I have probably misjudged the spot anyway. Thanks, Harry I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. Once at Sebastian we had to wait until a gal got off the plane who was to do a tandem. Her legs were shaking. She came back later and did her jump. At Skydive Chicago, I saw the plane descending more slowly than Otters usually do, and finally it landed. Evidently the pilot was trying not to make the tandem student any more nervous than the prospect of jumping had already made him. He shakily got off the plane. The tandem master is well known and is actually one of the best at making students comfortable. My guess is that this was not the sport for that student to begin with.
