I meant within western countries, rather than third world. I did a uni assignment last year looking at paid parental leave policies. It was very interesting. Finland has a good system of 70% of your income as parental leave.

    Measles

Playing devils advocate, although it’s interesting that Windsor isn’t towing the MAGA line where they want more babies not less. I believe the stats show that the poor and disadvantaged tend to have more children than the wealthy and more educated. I know Musk is doing his best to single handedly make up the difference:) I’m not equating poor with stupid. But shouldn’t we be trying to address the balance? I’d like see the tax structures changed to make it easier for one parent to stay home for the children, rather than child care credits etc. I believe a lot of our modern problems are due to the breakdown of the family unit and children having a parent looking after them. I’m not suggesting it should be the mother, either parent is fine.
  3. This is actually quite an interesting moral question in western society that has welfare (including Australia). Should people be ‘forced’ to work in manual/low paid jobs rather than welfare?
  4. https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/australian-mma-coach-says-he-was-detained-by-us-immigration-officials/jwrd9lhvt Australia’s head coach for the MMA team was detained for 24 hours due to a mistake on his visa. A growing number of countries are updating their travel warnings from green to yellow for the US. It’s incredibly sad as I enjoy visiting the states, but there’s no way I’m risking it anytime soon .
  5. https://theonion.com/u-s-offers-platinumplus-preferred-citizenship-1819564488/ An onion article from the 90’s is not longer satire.
  6. Well here’s an alternative view on how tariffs work. Donny thinks that the drug dealers are paying tariffs on fentanyl.
  7. True, although I was thinking about the boycott campaigns causing other nations to look elsewhere. For example my local supermarket sells American oranges. If consumer boycotts cause them to buy elsewhere, what is the incentive to go back?
  8. Yes I heard that part. You’re right nobody is going to want to buy a pair of Nikes made in the USA that cost 10x the current price. The other issue is that anti US sentiment is high and Boycott USA movement is gaining a lot of traction. Our government has started pumping money into a Buy Aussie campaign and although not as strong as the Canadian and EU movements people are actively boycotting American products. Once supply chains shift, it’s going to be very hard to get them back.
  9. I stumbled across this YouTube video and found it quite interesting. I realise it’s a 20 minute video, but the presenter lays out how this is a high risk but potentially viable solution to the US retaining its global role. I don’t understand history and global economics enough to know if it’s complete drivel. https://youtu.be/1ts5wJ6OfzA?si=tMBqy0MuORPp5j2C

    Trump

I saw an interesting article that shows how it’s quite plausible that Trump used ChatGbt to calculate the tariffs.

    Trump

The USA has placed tariffs on Heard and McDonald Islands. They have a total human population of 0. That will teach those penguins a lesson!
  12. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/keith-self-quotes-joseph-goebbels-nazi-congress_n_67ed7d19e4b0b937ab8f59d5 Nothing alarming at all about a republican senator quoting a nazi propagandist on the role that the government should play in the media.
  13. Considering the pace of the anti DEI actions, the stripping of laws protecting women and non whites and apathy of politicians and the people on stopping it, there’s a good chance only white males will be allowed in 2028.
  14. Every Tesla post makes me wonder what Brent is making of it all. It’s got to be a confusing world when 1. Tim Wallz is on stage celebrating the drop in Tesla stocks 2. The Whitehouse has become a Tesla showroom 3. Donald loves Tesler 4. Tesla has become the symbol of the far right and the proud boys are protecting showrooms.
  15. I feel like the opportunity to halt the decline is rapidly fading away. It needs the democrats to grow some spine and leadership, and a few republicans to break rank and say enough is enough. I quite like the Bernie, AOC and Waltz rallies that are getting coverage.

    Trump

Some random guy on the internet whose paid by Soros

    Trump

Considering cult members are willing to give their lives for their leader, I don’t think there is anything that can change their minds. You’re operating on a false premise that the average Trump supporter sees him as bad
  18. What I find alarming is the rapid descent into warmongering and there is no resistance from within the republican party. What we’ve learned is Trump paves the way with the insanity and they follow along. I fear Greenland is these case although the real goal of Trump is Canada. The reality is that nobody is going to stand in the way of a military conflict over Greenland. The rest of the world will express disapproval, but they aren’t going to pick up weapons to defend them. Time to rebrand the US as enemy of the free world.
  19. Probably not only elderly.
  20. There’s a joke of sorts about how anyone who can bleed for days and not die must be demonic.
  21. New username. I’m guessing like many of us we hadn’t updated browser passwords and lost login with the new domain name. I’m just lucky I have t changed this password in 25 years, so remembered my password from my youth :)
  22. In a win for Australia Tucker Carlson hasn’t managed to get a visa. So he’s live streaming to the event.
  23. It’s ok, you all need to calm down. White men are in charge. As Winsor says “Imagine if Harris had won”.
  24. The journalist has released the entire message chain. It’s interesting how JD mentions that Europe doesn’t have the capability to stop/intercept the sophisticated weapons that the Houthi are using and only the US does. IF that is true I wonder who supplied them the weapons? Reminds me of the Brit politician who said we know Iraq have WMD because we’ve still got the receipts.
  25. I guess I thought the truly ignorant were mythical creatures. I know I’m on the news obsessed/addicted end of the scale. I know there are a large number of people who rely on social media “news”. This goes both ways, my aunt is passionately anti trump and I’ve had to pull her up a few times that her news is either fake or satire. This has to be the biggest flaw in democracy and I don’t know how you fix it. My inclination is towards a qualified voting process, but I’m acutely aware of the dangers this poses. A while ago you were trying to crowd fund buying/bailing out dz.com, maybe you should start crowd funding us buying a small nation. As long as it’s got good weather for retirement, good food and a dz I’m in. We can start off with a nice small cabinet. Wendy as Premier, Kallend education, Billvon science, Bigun defence, and Jakee ministry of truth :)
