Interesting wording… Harris is damage and the felon, rapist, traitor is shenanigans? The only thing I am ‘praying’ for at this point is the safety of my American friends and that there is no violence.

Elon Musk, Trump, Security Concerns for America
nigel99 replied to Phil1111's topic in Speakers Corner
Seriously seeing the news about Musk and Putin, if Harris wins he should have his US Citizenship pulled and be deported to South Africa. -
Interesting Midas Touch video stating that pollsters might be manipulating the data to show a closer race than it really is, as the poll results may be showing ‘unexpected’ results. Although recently I’ve noticed Midas touch using clickbait titles and then fairly light ‘real’ content to back up their assertions

From the backlash I’m not so sure.

From memory that is quite a big shift for you. While I may not share your beliefs, it’s good to see you not being hypocritical.

Breaking news - Traffic to The Onion has plummeted as satire is no longer distinguishable from reality.

If you’ve seen the very vocal outcry that man is the head of the home and women should submit to their husbands, or that voting differently to your husband is the same as cheating, I think you would see how sensitive a nerve this hit among men. It’s not condescending at all, what it hints at is an epidemic of coercive control in the US, something that is classified as criminal domestic violence in many Western countries and not tolerated.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11-02/kamala-harris-paths-to-win-us-election-over-donald-trump/104540990 This is quite a long read but very interesting. “When technology permits people to mostly hear what they want to hear, and social media acts as a contagion for one-sided hot takes, are there any analytical tools which are still reliable? Revealing my own bias, I'd suggest that cold hard numbers and the evidence of history — whilst not infallible — offer a more reliable steer than gut instinct or the latest trending topic. I say "revealing my own bias" because somebody like me — a career journalist with a public broadcaster — keeps reaching for facts and historical data when they're increasingly less and less useful for predicting political outcomes.”

Free social media and search engines are probably one of the biggest causes of the growth in distorted beliefs. The highly sophisticated ad and article targeting, is designed to tweak your interest and so you get sucked into a rabbit hole without even being a conscious participant. Interestingly, even if you are searching for something google ‘knows best’ and tailors the results. The simplest example is searching for a shop or supplier in a different geographic region, despite stating the location the results are much smaller, lower quality than if you repeat the search using a vpn endpoint in that location and repeat the term. Or my biggest frustration working for a Finnish company and having a VPN that defaults there half the time, and websites preventing me from using Australian currency.

We have talked about misogyny in the US before, but I’m truly shocked at the level of backlash over this ad. The American right have more in common with Iran and the Taliban than they care to admit.

One of the downsides of the 24 hour news cycle, internet and social media is that the quality of information is generally poor.

Please bear in mind I am passing on his views and these aren’t my own! I’m not going to defend them :) To start with he believes that Trump brings a fresh perspective to politics, by not being a career politician. While he accepts that Trump is vulgar and that his ‘presentation’ is less than ideal, he challenges the political structures. He agrees with the tough immigration stance and the ‘America first’ attitude of promoting internal business and discouraging business from manufacturing outside the US. The last point is that most politicians and wealthy businessmen break the rules and are corrupt to some extent. He believes that because Trump challenged the political establishment, he has been disproportionately pursued for crimes. He doesn’t say he is innocent, but rather the energy spent on Trump is more than others. Trump (especially of late), just blurts things out and has no impulse control. However, he also sees it as a form of ‘gaslighting’ to successfully implement policies. For example , suggesting 200% tariffs. He doesn’t believe Trump is stupid enough to believe or do that, but by setting the conversation there, he manages to implement say 5-10% tariffs with no resistance. This friend a very successful sales manager, in a trade Industry supplying building contractors , where it’s normal to take clients to strip clubs etc. Trump’s crassness is not seen as out of the ordinary but rather as a ‘typical bloke’

I’m always interested in hearing viewpoints though. I have one friend who is pro trump and some reasonably sane explanations for a few things. But so far he’s the only person who seems to have a semi coherent argument. There’s nothing we agree on though
-
Can you expand on that? Any specific policies or achievements specifically? I may not agree with your views, but it’s nice not to live in an echo chamber or bubble. Unfortunately, so many right wing posters here just troll and you can’t get any perspective (I’m not accusing you of trolling). Does his moral character and personality influence your views one way or another? I don’t think you should be attacked for speaking up on your views. One aspect I liked about speakers corner was the diversity of opinion.
-
Why do you support Trump? I’m genuinely interested.

Well Comical Ali from Iraq would not even be newsworthy now.

How the hell does American politics even give this clown a chance? From the CNN article on the Joe Rogan interview “Here is a fact check of 32 false claims Trump made to Rogan. This is not intended as a complete list of the inaccurate statements Trump uttered in the interview; with just over a week to go until Election Day, we were unable to look into every dubious assertion he made.”

Provided they bought DJT stock at the right price of course

The parallels between MAGA and eastern theocracies are mind blowing. Tends to reinforce my view that religion is toxic or a mental illness.

I think he’s a slime ball who is covering his arse. The only positive I can take from that is that Mitch is seeing that Donald may lose and wants to make sure he’s on record. If he was confident of a Trump win he would admit nothing
