The problem is that isolationist polices are attractive at face value. I believed that Brexit would be a good thing for the UK. Uk standard of living was higher than many parts of the EU. The way I saw it was that by leaving the EU the UK standard of living would be maintained for a longer time, but ultimately would end in a war in the long term. 8 years later it’s pretty clear I was wrong.

Trumps the one blowing microphones and on his knees for dictators…
-
Haha, shouldn’t have expected anything less from you. If it’s bad then it’s the dems fault, if it’s good then it’s Trumps genius. Pretty much every economist with credibility says Trumps economic plan is nuts (and let’s face it - even you can’t deny he’s had 6 bankruptcies, or were those also Bidens fault?)
-
There’s a huge difference between saying your enemy is smart and should be taken seriously because they aren’t idiots, and pandering and deferring to them because you admire them as ‘alpha males’.
-
You mean the same way that inflation lags policy? Or the MAGA mindset is these things only work when it fits their version of the facts?
-
I disagree with you. Empires come and go, this is another step of America in that direction and it’s a big one.

Elon Musk?

Trump has the mandate of the people. Having seen first hand in Zimbabwe how Mugabe manipulated the masses through a combination of empty promises that appealed to the masses and the threat of violence, I do believe that Trump committed similar crimes. For months we have heard the threat of election violence if Trump lost, and I am certain that a percentage of the population voted for him to avoid that possibility. The only thing that I can think of that could have been done differently would have been for Biden to exercise the powers that the Supreme Court gave a sitting President and for him to have squashed Trump’s treasonous behaviour outside of the civil court system. I don’t know Military law, but as ex Commander in Chief maybe the documents case should have been treated as a military tribunal/prosecution and been prosecuted promptly and harshly.

There’s a lot to process. Over the past 25 years we’ve seen so many major events and changes. From 9/11 through the GFC and Covid. The election of Trump is/was quite likely fuelled by fear and uncertainty, for many of those who voted for him. At the same time, I think for the vast majority of the world his election brings on fear, anxiety and uncertainty of what is to come. It’s so easy to give into fear and obsess over what if’s. I’ve got a child in the military, and honestly I was already not very happy that he is going to see active conflict. Now I fear that it could be so much worse, because I don’t see Trump as a peace maker. There are posters here that are knowledgeable about history (Jakee, Billvon, Kallend to name a few) and the parallels with the history of facism and the rise of the nazies is scary. A large part of me wants to just switch off to it all and get on with life in blissful ignorance. I’m very lucky, I live in a place with no geopolitical significance and financially I have nothing to worry about. Ultimately I believe the right thing to do is to connect with those around us and do our best to rebuild a sense of community and support in challenging times.

He’s every single one of those things, with years of documented evidence. Even my Trump supporting friend admits that he dislikes Trumps vulgarity. Racist - he didn’t lease property to blacks Sexist - pick your story, from the Hollywood tape, through to loses in court Cruel - Comments about Pelosi’s husband being attacked Vulgar - His language, simulating a sex act with a microphone in front of children Conman - Trump university and charity

I don’t think I can take hearing ‘we are the greatest democracy and leader of the free world’ any more. I hope that as the US drifts towards being a theocracy with a corrupt ruling class, that the rest of the world can wean itself off the US and limit the damage to ourselves.
-
I didn’t compare her to Biden, I compared her to Trump. Secondly, the US is a democracy and as I said the election of Trump is a reflection on the character of Americans. The fact that the majority, either value a person of no moral character or would vote for him simply because the alternative is a black woman, reflects a society that I am glad that I am not a part of.

So in short Trump was full of shit saying he could end it in a day …
-
The goal posts will always move. Trump made the claim… I’ve had enough of Trump, I hoped it would be over. Probably about time to swap out my news subscriptions for a pornhub subscription. If I’m going to spend 4 years watching people get screwed, may as well enjoy it

How is that relevant to Trump’s promise to end the Ukraine war in a day as soon as he is president elect? Also just because the US likes to spend trillions on weapons doesn’t mean everyone else should. And to be blunt about it, if they are going to then support the European defence industry not American

Harris is and was a better candidate than Trump. The fact Trump won so many votes is a reflection on American people and not in a good way. By all accounts it looks like Trump will have absolute power, let’s check back in after 2 years and see what he’s achieved, and how things are going. I mean the war in Ukraine is supposed to be over tomorrow if he keeps his word https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/watch-trump-promises-to-settle-war-in-ukraine-if-elected

Honestly, it’s not an attack it’s a statement of fact. Very early on when we started discussing options to Biden here and discussed Harris, I think it was Wendy who said her biggest obstacle would be being a black woman in America. long ago I learned to not ‘trust’ media and to listen to the source directly, so I have listened to a couple of Trump speeches and rallies, as well as one or two from JD Vance. The message was very clear from ‘their eating the dogs’ to ‘I’ll protect woman if they like it or not’

Really good post.

Trump has followed the dictator play book to the letter. 1. Promise simple solutions to complex problems 2. Create a group to hate and blame for all problems 3. Use the threat of violence to discourage freedom of expression and manipulate voters The US has lost credibility in the eyes of the world, its elected a diaper wearing nut job who simulates oral sex on a microphone. I doubt it is the ‘end of the US’, but it’s definitely a significant marker on a downward spiral. Welcome to 3rd world levels of corruption where Trumps mates are above the law and get rewarded for it. I’ve said all along Trump would win, I’m going to put another stake in the ground and say that within 2 years he will either voluntarily step down or be forced out.

It’s pretty sad that we can’t have a debate. I’ve said multiple times I like being in exposed to other points of view.
-
There should be a prize or a free jump ticket or something for a Trump supporter who is able to articulate a policy
-
I’ve asked Brent numerous times and he was about as forthcoming as you are
-
Not an American - just collateral damage as part of the rest of the world as a consequence of poorly educated, racist and misogynistic people. I’ve asked time and again here for any policies of Trump and it’s been crickets.
-
While I predicted this result I had dearly hoped I was wrong. I feel sad for my friends who didn’t support him and the consequences they will face. As for the people who voted for him, they will get what they deserve.
