  1. BBC radio 4 did sensationalise the article by claiming on the headline that it was that they were being denied drugs. I agree that the article here presents a much less sensational view. However I still don't like the fact that people can try and "sue" the system for dealing with the consequences of a criminal offence. 2. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6142416.stm Crazy on the radio they, said that the home office was sued for "breaching their human rights" by preventing drug use... Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  3. http://www.princeaugust.ie/index.html A client gave me the Robin hood chess set for Christmas. Sits in the box as I don't want to mess it up. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  4. I am sure in the policemans case that he was quite justified in being a UK citizen on duty in an embassy in London and feeling that he was unsafe/threatened by being in the Israeli embassy. What are your thoughts on the turbans though? Guy who works for me is really peaved by that one... Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. We were discussing in our office the muslim police officer who didn't want to work at the Isreali embassy in London. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5408470.stm Colleague then mentioned this law ... "Sikhs who wear Turbans need not wear crash helmets when they ride Motor Cycles or Scooters. They have been allowed to wear Turban as their only headgear. In accordance with the Motor-Cycle Crash Helmets (Religious Exemption) Act 1976 passed by the British Parliament in 1976, Section 2A "exempts any follower of the Sikh religion while he is wearing a turban" from having to wear a crash helmet" Is it right for such exemptions to be made? 6. [rant Jeez it pisses me off when the US tries to grab credit for things. Bloody MI5 has been monitoring this for some months, then people try and pass the credit to the NSA. Firstly the NSA is only released the information WHEN a flight takes off and not before (still contravening the data protection act). The brits are much more clued on terrorism - sorry but this gets my back up. /rant] Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  7. It's very real. One of the guys arrested lives on my road (about 10 doors away). The place is still cordoned off 24 hours later with 4 armed police outside the premises. I was at work when it all broke - but my wife says that police removed explosives from the site. Also it appears that there are more people involved than are being publicly released. 8. If you are fitting your data on a CD easily then I suggest off site internet backup - as you mentioned only 2 pc's with some documents and accounts. We backup online (4 pc's) a 4GB account costs us around £15 per month. It is totally painless and we have used their restore once for a single file - it worked very well. One thing to be careful of is that their automatic settings for files may not match your needs (our services default kept 1 revision of the file). 9. It was the US pilot who killed the canadian's who was on drugs and was let off. (I know George supplied the drugs so it was ok). Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  10. What gets me about this is some of the comments coming out of the US military about the suicides - to quote headlines from the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/5068606.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/5069230.stm Killing yourself is an act of war!!! I think that some people are in serious denial about their role in this. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  11. Hunting endangered species can be a good thing - as it can be driven by market forces. If there is demand to hunt an animal, then hunting safaris will protect and encourage the local animal population to ensure supply. Secondly most hunters go for adult male trophies as these normally represent the macho "kill". Certainly not an expert on the matter just grew up around hunting safaris in Africa where people from the west paid big money for these kinds of opportunities. 12. Could you clarify this as I am a little confused. If the air density is lower = higher speed doesn't that mean that the air resistance is the same? I would have expected intuitively that if the air density is lower then you could expect to open at a higher speed without damage? 13. Look at the Yamaha YZF600 (Fazer) if you get them in the states. Good riding position and has an R6 engine in it. I regularly do 100-200 mile journeys. (It goes faster than I need to +100 easily) Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  15. Why is it that people here spout so vehemently anti-europe/anti-USA? The US has an unfortunate public image problem that means that many people who have not been there absolutely hate the place, and yet when you go to the US and "see" what people are like it is completely different. I figure the same holds true in most of Europe (I have only been to Germany and Switzerland on mainland europe and there is no widespread animosity towards the USA. Jeez I figure ppl on speakers corner should get a handicap rating next to their name unless they have been where they are bashing. 16. on the spreadsheet does the UK not being on it mean that it is not in the top 45? Sorry I could not find a top level above the spreadsheet with a description. They are members of the OECD. I am not shocked if they are not their attitude towards education sucks big time... just surprised that some of the other countries listed would be better. 17. Am I being overly skeptic here? The dollar is falling as the world market is worried about the US trade deficit. The Bush government does not seem to have a credible policy to fix the situation (if they did the banking sector would not be dumping the dollar for the euro to the extent that they are). Then yesterday CNN runs a story about imported food being open to bio/chemical attack which I assumme the report was based on a terror alert/government notice or report being released. Is this about terror or economics? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  19. 13 religious extremests smuggled 36 barrels of explosives into the basement of the House of Lords with the intention of destroying the Houses of Parliament. In the early hours of November 5th special forces raided the basement and caught the ring leader. The leader (Guy Fawkes) was tortured and sentenced to death. 20. it is traditional to congratulate presidents on re-election. Hell even Mugabe gets congratulated by the west usually... but to ensure you're not misguided in believing that all is well check out the front pages in some of the UK press Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  21. That is not what Tenet and the CIA believe. The Afganistan war was executed initially with US Special Forces supporting CIA paramilitary teams. The CIA was funding the Northern Alliance, and Tenet warned Bush that the biggest risk was that in Afganistan you "rent" peoples loyalty & they always default to the highest bidder. Apparantly Taliban commanders were defecting for as little as US$50K. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  22. I thought under Bush logic that means he is REDUCING terrorism - suicide bomber dies = 1 less terrorist. Isn't that the whole point of Iraq attract all the badies and let them blow themselves up away from us civies so its all good. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  23. unfortunately the "eat sand Saddam" (nice phrase), mindset with virtually no post war planning has resulted in terrorist havens. One of Bush's key strategies is eliminating safe havens for terrorists - defined by his team as "lawless states without proper government". He's created 1 haven (Iraq) & not solved Afganistan. At least one reason why Bush politically should have got into bed with the UN at the beginning, was that they have beauracrates who are better than his team at that type of planning. Secondly while I dislike the man, strategically if he had engaged the UN, he could blame them for the shite nation building - and keep his nose clean. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  24. Bush is good at planning for war - just hopeless at planning for the post war phase. This has been proven in Afganistan & Iraq. Maybe he doesn't think he'll win and therefore no need to bother? By now he should have learn't his lesson - but maybe its politics - No US troops for Nation building thing? Who knows but some of us are getting pissed off with him blowing countries up & leaving them in ruins Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  25. first answer - drunk driving requires she get caught in the act by the police - we've tried but when a police car appears on the road at 1am - her kids phone her and she parks up - its not that easy... Secondly it is not only the UK that has screwed up laws (& some are: read up on Tony Martin you'll enjoy that one) but last night there was an article on the California three strikes and you're out law - people there have been given 25 yrs (life) for stealing a slice of pizza. I think thats as screwed up as anything we've got. I am sure we could all list screwed up laws from ALL countries that we live in (but we've got to keep politicians and lawyers busy ) Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
